They also brought the introduction of “thelemity” — a magical force akin to gravity or electricity — to our universe....

But Oh Lucy!, an independent Japanese production from debut feature writer and director Atsuko Hirayanagi, tackles the familiar subject matter better than most, combining pathos, comedy and a bunch of great performances to create something truly special and ultimately moving. Through its lead character, the film taps into a universal desire to escape from our lives when we realise we’re not what we dreamed we’d be. The film starts with a random suicide at the train platform, and we quickly realise that such incidents are so frequent that a co-worker thinks nothing of telling Setsuko “I haven’t witnessed one yet’....

While Snow’s initial foray into government was lackluster to say the least, she did (true to my heart’s greatest wish) manage to have at least one of Regina’s black and white artifacts replaced with a resplendently colorful and terrible painting of some birds – a fact that did not go unnoticed by Regina. Thankfully, the once-and-future mayor deigned only to give this decorative infraction an eye-roll: She was too busy trying to help Robin Hood unfreeze Marian....

It’s a fact that the cast of Once Upon a Time does not gather to do table-reads of each script before they begin production. Tonight’s episode proved that this choice was, indeed, a wise one and not just an unfortunate consequence of Katsis and Edwards being too damn lazy to shift their butts from LA to Vancouver (hello extremely wealthy dudes, allow me to introduce you to something called video-conferencing)....

Outcast Episode 8 English poet John Donne may have written that “No man is an island,” but Reverend John Anderson clearly did not get the memo. The parallels between Donne’s poem about the search for meaning in life strike at the heart of “What Lurks Within,” and while we receive some answers in this week’s episode of Outcast, many previously accepted assumptions may not be as solid as once thought. Just when we believe the rift between Kyle Barnes and Anderson has closed, the reverend alienates himself further throwing caution aside as he finally goes too far prompting the church leaders to relieve him of his ministerial duties....

Firstly Paul, the question on many lips is: how did Hornet’s Nest come about? Were the scripts written by you specifically with Tom’s Doctor in mind? The scripts were written expressly for this Doctor and this series. I was shown the briefing document at the beginning of last autumn by Michael Stevens, and invited to pitch a story for one of the five slots. I kept coming up with ideas that BBC Audio liked and I ended up being commissioned for the whole lot....

Even the best of dramas is bound to have a mis-step every now and again, and while the fourth episode of Peaky Blinders is the weakest yet, there was still plenty to enjoy. The development of the relationship between Tommy and Grace is handled well. Great writing by Steven Knight teases the viewer into thinking Tommy is aware of Grace’s deception, only to twist in another direction and make us think he is oblivious to her wiles....

9.2 Gregory’s Beard With the status quo restored, Peep Show let rip with a wonderful second episode that took full advantage of Mark and Jez’s return to acrimony as they took potshots at each other from vantage points of dubious superiority. The episode’s opening found them trading barbs about Mark’s unwillingness to turn on the heating, culminating in an internal monologue (“mousetrap in the Frosties”) that underlined that it isn’t masturbating to Dobby’s Google Maps icon that really gives Mark a thrill; controlling every aspect of his friend’s life whilst revelling in his misery is what really floats his boat....

Said child was almost entirely on the money too. As we’ve reported before, Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots isn’t a Peppa Pig film. Instead, it’s an “experience”. If you’re one of those who treats anything described as an “experience” with a cautiously raised eyebrow, then we’re on your team. So let’s do the various assorted bits in turn. I’ve made the comparison before, but the Shaun The Sheep movie managed to get an 80 minute story together, without even needing dialogue....

Actor Jack Farthing must be a wizard, or something like one. There can scarcely be a more detestable character in fiction than George Warleggan, a man with a nest of unusually cruel and petty vipers in place of a heart. And yet, through his magic, Farthing makes George… if not sympathetic, then at least pitiable. When he delivered the desperate line “Is he my son?” in this week’s finale, I was moved to shed a tear....

2.10 Dirty Little Secret Perhaps the show is too niche to court much controversy, but if there is a group of people out there willing to start complaining, they’ll find them this week and enrage them. One of the biggest elements of the comic book was that The Grail had in their possession the Messiah, a horribly inbred descendent of Jesus Christ whose holy bloodline was kept pure thanks to 25 generations or so of inbreeding....

4.4 Face Time Phew! Any episode with Melissa Hastings actually present in Rosewood is always going to be answers-packed, but this week took the biscuit. Spencer finally has the sense to use some of her A tricks to lure answers out of her sister, and it works! We may not have received the big answers we were after (let’s cut the writers some slack on that one – we’re only in week four) but the heated confrontation between Melissa and Spencer was certainly informative in other ways....

This week, by splitting up the crew and having consecutive stories they have the best of both worlds. You get one show-long arc per episode being a ‘monster of the week’ type action-based story, while the other is a deeper series-wide arc that has Helen Cutter and her mysterious mysteries undermining the work of the ARC team. So with the dual stories, the scene is set, and the show really has become a seriously fun part of Saturday night....

Maybe that is being a bit harsh, but let me explain. Over the past few weeks things have been hotting up plot-wise for Helen, the mysterious artefact and the ongoing idea that a potential disaster or apocalypse might occur if the said artefact falls into the wrong hands. With each week a bit more of the jigsaw is being put into place. That’s not to say that the episode is a complete loss; there are some good bits, which I will come to in a minute, but really this week’s show is a bit of a return to the lacklustre form of the previous two series....

In retrospect, I suppose it should have been quite obvious that softly-spoken toyshop owner Peter is a latter-day member of the Third Reich. He had the secret stash of Nazi memorabilia buried beneath the facade of his toyshop, after all, and he even has the little moustache. And yet, it was only when he emerged from the shadows in his uniform that the Reichsmark dropped. And as it turns out, actor Jason Watkins makes for the perfect heel-clicking Obersturmführer....

This fatality and other curious happenings are all taking place at the Comfort Food Cook-off, which Ned and Olive are attending to represent the culinary skills of the Pie Hole. Much of the bitchiness between the contestants is very funny, but actually this isn’t the real meat the sandwich of this moveable feast. It’s what goes on away from the Cook-off that really puts the fat in the fire. Chuck admits this to Emerson and they return to the graveyard to find out who she indirectly killed!...

Quarry Season 1, Episode 7 The best plot twists are comprised of unexpected moments that, when looking back at the episode, are so obvious that they seem impossible to miss. Such is the case with the latest Quarry, which strung together a series of adventurous but completely normal events (at least for this show) and threw in a few seemingly insignificant mistakes that nearly derailed everything Mac and others have fought for....

Ransom’s purported hook is that it’s based on the real-life professional experiences of renowned crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert and his partner, Marwan Mery, but is that enough? Or perhaps followers of Luke Roberts from Black Sails will be anxious to see his swarthy good looks in this lead role as Eric Beaumont, the head of a private firm called Crisis Resolution. Or maybe Penny Dreadful fans will enjoy seeing Sarah Greene as the intrepid novice, Maxine Carlson....

As for the action, returned father and sketchy figure Caleb Richards got his hands plenty dirty. After seemingly murdering a man, Caleb faced investigation from Agent Bellamy and Sheriff Frank. Bellamy puts the pieces together and sees that all things point towards Caleb, but Frank initially is reluctant to follow his lead. At this point, Frank’s disdain towards Bellamy still seems random and unfounded, I understand that Bellamy is a stranger poking around into painful family memories, but Bellamy has been nothing but helpful so far, and most of all, right....

The events depicted in this episode take place during the bloody Battle of the Bulge, a last-ditch German offensive in the Ardennes forest which caught Allied forces by surprise and proved to be the deadliest battle of the war for the United States Army. For me, this is one of the most powerful and striking episodes of the entire series. In Bastogne, we find Easy Company facing some truly terrible conditions and struggling against the odds to hold their position....
