Financially, the idea of a Toy Story sequel is a no-brainer, but was it an easy project to handle from a producer’s point of view? Both Lee and I felt a lot of pressure to make a good movie, because neither of us wanted to be attached to anything that wasn’t of the highest standard in this Toy Story line. So, yeah, we worked so, so hard to make a movie that would be worthy of standing alongside the two films....

It’s the kind of move that could be regarded as lazy or tentative in some circumstances, but Baumbach and Paltrow are shrewd enough to recognise that a director known for his technical flourishes needs room to breathe; and besides, De Palma and his movies are interesting enough subjects that they hardly need further embellishment. De Palma takes us through the director’s movies in chronological order, all the better to see his growth as a filmmaker – and how the setbacks in his career affected its trajectory as much as the successes....

2.7 If You Could See Her Through My Eyes Is it me, or did Defiance flirt this week with being somewhat soap-opera at times? Possibly. But that didn’t stop it being both entertaining and divisive in equal measure. What was slightly jarring was that plots that have run at full steam since the start of the season were put on hold, with no Pottinger, Tommy or Berlin this week. With them out of the picture there was plenty of room to run what was essentially a parallel Tarr story, with both Datak and Alak presented with their own challenges....

3.1 The World We Seize & 3.2 The Last Unicorns Parts of season 2 certainly left a slightly bad taste in the mouth. While many characters and situations were set up as being massively threatening, such as Pottinger and E-Rep, none delivered even a tenth of their hyped potential. It also suffered from an inclination to try to weave a worlds-collide epic narrative with mostly rather ordinary characters, even if some of them are well formed....

Former residents of the “Demon House” Latoya Ammons claimed she and her three children, then aged 7, 9 and 12, experienced supernatural occurrences such as physical contact, possessions, and levitation. Authorities called The Department of Child Services. Capt. Charles Austin, the city’s police chief and a 36-year veteran of the Gary Police Department, is on record saying the claims are credible. Austin initially thought Latoya Ammons and her family made up the story....

First and foremost, AJ Yates, or the Brain Surgeon, is gone. Dexter shoved a stake through his body and now we are left without a surface layer antagonist. Honestly, the Brain Surgeon gimmick didn’t pan out nearly as well as I was hoping for. I was excited by the prospect of a new serial killer adversary but the show never really decided to make anything special out of Yates as a character, wasting all of his potential....

5.11 Hop A Freighter This was the key narrative thread that connected events in Hop A Freighter, which brought many plot lines to an end and moved the story into a whole new phase for next week’s season end. Having reviewed this show for some time, I’ve noticed the model on which the concept is entirely built. At its core, it’s a delicate balance between what characters know, and more pointedly, what they don’t know....

This review contains spoilers. The gap having narrowed between my initial expectations of what a programme called Dirk Gently would be and what Howard Overman and chums have made, I find myself enjoying the show much more. By the time this week’s jaunty music and spinning opening credits rolled I was happily expecting another fun, busy caper punctuated with gags and machine-gun monologues from the world’s only holistic detective, which is exactly what we were given....

This time, the story is set far in Earth’s future (although it’s not as far forward as Rose Tyler had to travel on her maiden voyage!), where most of the United Kingdom is now represented on a floating spaceship. It’s not your everyday floating spaceship, of course, although we’ll leave it for you to discover more about that when the episode screens. However, it’s also a platform for Moffat to weave in some interesting subtext and character development work, and one that allows the Doctor to play detective a little....

This being a Seventh Doctor and Ace story, the “Dark Doctor” is in the ascendency (Beige coat, Doctor 7.2). Here, he has no complex and Machiavellian plan to go wrong, but he does wing it somewhat when he discovers what’s going on. Instead of being devious, he seems somewhat cowardly and aloof. Rest assured dreadful things will happen in the name of maintaining order, but it could be worse; Blackman gives the Doctor a pragmatic reason for his actions, when she could have gone for a much darker, more ambiguous route....

Ness has taken a considered look at a considered Doctor, and came up with what we’d now term a ‘Doctor-light’ story. The action unfolds with two children as our leads. Johhny and Nettie are young teenage outcasts – of German-Jewish and mixed-race familes respectively – in America during 1944. Johnny fancies Marisa, she of the aloof angelic type, and despite his poverty (his Dad is away fighting in Europe, he and his Mum work evening jobs) has shelled out on a second-hand Truth Teller....

The latest attempt to translate the Time Lord to the stage is the unimaginatively titled ‘Doctor Who Live’, currently touring the country. If all this sounds a little bit familiar, that’s because this story is a direct sequel to the 1973 tale Carnival Of Monsters, in which Jon Pertwee found himself trapped inside the Miniscope alongside a cavalcade of creatures, under the supervision of Vorg, who is revealed to be Vorgenson’s father....

7.7 The Bells Of St John Where did Clara’s 16th and 23rd years go in her book? Is there meaning to their absence? Also, what is The Great Intelligence up to? Who else let out a strange noise of glee when Richard E Grant reappeared? And can we have more Celia Imrie in Doctor Who in the future please? It’d be remiss to say that The Bells Of St John felt like a return to form for Doctor Who, because even in its weaker stories, there’s been a good deal to enjoy over the past 12 months....

At least the timeline issue is cleared up somewhat in this episode. We once again flash back to Dracula’s tomb, moments after Van Helsing has reawakened him. Once again, the production values and gore are on full display here, and Dracula is positively cinematic in these moments. The problem is that the explanation of why Dracula and Van Helsing have a shared interest in eliminating the Order of the Dragon (they also killed Van Helsing’s wife…and kids) still doesn’t ring true....

DuckTales Episode 13 The DuckTales characters are a joy to watch. They all bounce off each other in really unique ways. They’re like the wacky family you wish you had. It speaks to their strengths that dropping any of them in any situation will produce comedic gold. DuckTales could be a full on comedy if it really wanted but mixing adventure into the mix makes it even better. The characters are so good in fact they help keep a rather mundane episode fairly enjoyable....

Boogie WoogieBoogie Woogie is a multi-narrative British film based around the London art scene, full of collectors, artists and various hangers-on. Art Spindle (a devilish Danny Huston, turning his character’s snickering into a running joke), a dishonourable art dealer, is trying to get his hands on a Piet Mondrian painting – the Boogie Woogie of the title – but is challenged by rival Bob Maccelstone (Stellan Skarsgård), and both face the difficulty of actually convincing long-term owner Alfred Rhinegold (Christopher Lee) to give up the painting....

So, while it’s not as successful a horror film as Shaun of the Dead, for a zom-rom-com Life After Beth manages to make itself distinct. It isn’t trying to scare you, and so zombie purists should note that it isn’t a classic zombie film in that respect. Instead, it does have some great comedic moments, especially regarding American suburbia, and some genuinely effective pathos. Finding empathy and friendliness with Beth’s parents (John C....

4.9 Till Death Do Us Part That kicks off a pretty good firefight between Tom and the gang and the evil Nazi summer camp counselors, in which Tom finally toughs up and shoots some kids, albeit kids who were actively trying to kill them. That’s all well and good, and after shooting a half-dozen teenagers in masks, Tom and company are alive, but sans the concussion grenades they need to make Tom’s latest crazy plan work: The Second Mass is going to the moon!...
