Heroes Season 3 Episode 17 Review

Previously, the show got hooked up on telling a whole back story to Sylar that just didn’t contribute much to the relevant events, and true to form, in this story they jump through the same pointless hoops once more. But there is a benefit to this pedantic pacing; there is no time to have Hiro and Ando being terminally stupid, or for Sylar and Microwave-boy to rehash any more Magneto and Pyro scenes from X-Men 2....

How Avengers Infinity War Connects To Captain Marvel

The first is Ant-Man and the Wasp, out this July, and it’s not too much of a stretch to forecast that the movie will be similar to 2015’s Ant-Man in tone and style. But more mysterious at this point is Captain Marvel, next March’s introduction of Air Force pilot turned half-alien superbeing Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson). “We are tapping into, in a way we haven’t before, the Kree-Skrull War from the comics,” he continued....

Hulk And The Agents Of S M A S H The Collector Review

Marvel is also doing a good job using these cartoons to serve as a primer for future Marvel projects. This episode serves as an introduction to the Collector. Next summer, expect to see the Collector (played by Benicio Del Toro in the Guardians of the Galaxy film) everywhere (there will be a certain irony in buying a Collector toy, no?). This Collector is more the cosmic, rabid action figure/ebay scalper than omnipotent, cold-hearted curiosity seeker Marvel introduced at beginning of the Bronze Age, but this simplified version of the character works in the context of the cartoon....

Ice Age Collision Course Review

For film five, which follows the chucklesome Ice Age: Continental Drift, the series decides to channel Michael Bay’s Armageddon a little bit, at one stage bringing in Trevor Rabin’s thumping score for a key sequence. That narrative thread is as yawnsome and predictable as it sounds, which is why it sometimes feels as though the film forgets about it, and instead opts to noodle around with the ensemble of characters....

Identity Thief Nick Allen Review

In the film Jason Bateman plays Sandy Patterson, an average American schmuck with a crummy job working for a horrible boss (Jon Favreau). He and his coworkers (led by John Cho) decide to leave their positions at this job and start a new firm, where they’ll be earning more money. However, Patterson’s new financial venture is stilted by his suddenly poor credit score, his disappearing bank account and a criminal record in Florida; someone has stolen his identity....

In The Dark Episode 1 Review

Welcome to rainy Polesford. Come for the manhunt, stay for the undisclosed past trauma and complicated interpersonal relationships. Well, you certainly don’t holiday in murder-town for the weather. Bates is innocent. At least, Detective Inspector Helen Weeks, back in her hometown to help out an old friend who happens to be married to him, thinks so. Weeks is exactly the sort of no-nonsense TV copper you feel you can trust about these things....

In The Dark Episode 3 Review

Goodbye Polesford and past trauma, hello Manchester and present day trauma. In The Dark has morphed into its second chapter, which doesn’t have much in common with its first. There’s not a mention of the historic child abuse case DI Helen Weeks reported at the end of the last episode, nor of that kidnapping murderer she cathartically stabbed in the heart. Weeks’ pregnancy aside, episode three could have aired a year apart from the previous instalment....

In The Name Of The King 2 Two Worlds Dvd Review

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale came out in 2007 and, I have to admit, I didn’t hate it. It’s a fantasy epic with a ridiculous sense of humour; it stars Jason Statham, Burt Reynolds, Matthew Lillard, and Ray Liotta, which has to be the least likely cast for a faux medieval fantasy movie ever, and it’s a lot of fun. In the Name of the King 2: Two Worlds, though, was made on a fraction of the first movie’s budget, and features hardly any recognisable faces at all....

It Comes At Night Review

Its origins are important. Shults has been open about the fact that he didn’t have much of a relationship with his father, and that the two of them only really came back together when his dad was dying. He wrote the first draft of the script to It Comes At Night in pretty much the immediate aftermath of his father’s death, and the power of the motion throughout the finished film is real evidence of that....

It S Alive 1974 Review

In 1974’s It’s Alive, writer/director Larry Cohen pushed that fear to extremes, taking the core of the Frankenstein story (as hinted at in the title) and producing the first mainstream American picture about the horror of childbirth. It was also, so far as I’m aware, the first film centered upon a murderous and bloodthirsty newborn. It’s Alive opens like any traditional drama about expecting parents. Frank (the great John P....

Izombie Pour Some Sugar Zombie Review

iZombie Season 2, Episode 16 In tonight’s iZombie someone (Ravi, of course) finally cottons on to the fact that Major is the Chaos Killer. This potentially changes everything. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see anything past Ravi’s understandably freaked out, angry, betrayed initial reaction because we have to suffer through an entire stripper murder mystery plot before we get to the good stuff… I feel a bit like a broken record here, but iZombie continues to be an uneven, though largely enjoyable show for me....

Jason Sudeikis Maisie Williams Talk 8 Year Odyssey Of The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea

“I found the script on the Black List in like 2008, and I immediately responded to it,” Purple said about the film’s earliest draft by Robbie Pickering. It was so impressive that he quickly took it to Biel and Michelle Purple, Bill’s wife and Biel’s producing partner. At once, all agreed they should make the film… which is only now enjoying its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend....

John Wick 2 Review

After his rampage in the first film, assassin extraordinaire John Wick is no longer viewed as retired, causing long buried ties to resurface. Forced to take on a task in Europe, Wick soon finds himself with another personal beef to resolve. Violence ensues. It’s no lazy rework, but the story isn’t as good. It’s not linear enough to allow it to build momentum as easily, and it’s only in the last 40 minutes that it really feels urgent....

Killjoys Season 4 Episode 4 Review What To Expect When You Re Expecting An Alien Parasite

Killjoys Season 4 Episode 4 “How could you make him into one of those things?” So much happens in “What to Expect When You’re Expecting . . . an Alien Parasite” that it’s difficult to decide where to begin. Though we still don’t know what The Lady is or how she can be stopped, Killjoys provides enough narrative movement with the emotional return of Johnny and Dutch that the frenetic pace and unresolved conflicts become easier to navigate....

Labor Day Review

The set up sees Kate Winslet starring as Adele, a woman living with her 13-year old son, Henry. Adele is in a bad place, a single mom battling with depression, and ahead of the five-day Labor Day holiday weekend, Josh Brolin’s escaped convict Frank comes into their lives. More to the point, he ends up hiding out in their house over the weekend. To the surprise of all concerned, he soon finds himself bonding with both Adele and Henry....

Lights Out Episode 10 Review Cut Men

Cut Men An episode like Cut Men is probably necessary at this stage in the storyline. The pieces of the plot need to start converging together with an eye towards what will hopefully be an explosive and gripping climax for what unfortunately looks likely to be Lights Out‘s first and only season, due to consistently underwhelming ratings. There were a lot of big plot developments in this episode, but ironically, I felt that this was responsible for losing some of the momentum that Lights Out has built up recently....

Louie Pamela Part 2 Review

I can’t say I expected this. For one thing, I’ve become accustomed to tragedy with Louie. I mean, Jesus Christ, remember how things were left off one season ago with the sudden death of Liz (Parker Posey)? But also, there was that whole “attempted rape” thing that went down in “Pamela Part 1,” which ended with Louie pretty much forcing a kiss onto Pamela’s face. So it was less than clear where things might go from there....

Lucifer Season 3 Episode 20 Review The Angel Of San Bernardino

Lucifer Season 3 Episode 20 “I don’t care who I have to hurt as long as it allows me to finally die.” Another in a long line of strong episodes, tonight’s tale uncovers the truth, at least partially, about Pierce’s seduction of Chloe, and Mazikeen’s role in the subterfuge that also draws Lucifer into an affair whose self-serving subtext will likely lead to a fracturing of the close knit group of friends and coworkers....

Mad Men Series 4 Episode 10 Review Hands And Knees

If this season of Mad Men were a novel, episode ten would serve as its darkest hour – the moment in the story where everything teeters on the brink of collapse, and the future looks uncertain for almost every character involved. Over the course of Mad Men’s previous three seasons, we’ve seen how ad man Don Draper has carefully built up his persona around him like a nest. Having borrowed the identity of a deceased soldier he served with in the Korean War, Don (née Dick Whitman) reinvented, chasing his own version of the American dream, and acquiring huge success along the way....
