While the narrative is fairly boilerplate, the pacing is set up nicely as the gang falls deeper and deeper into a secret world of clues and intrigue. Castle is basically channeling his inner Tom Hanks and he is no slouch when it comes to NYC history, Latin, and puzzle solving. However Beckett is her skeptical self and doesn’t believe any of Rick’s crazy theories. Naturally she comes around by the time the episode is nearing the end....
Castle Rock Episode 8 It’s difficult following up a series-defining episode like last week’s Sissy Spacek-centric “The Queen,” and “Past Perfect” doesn’t quite accomplish it. Where Ruth Deaver’s gut-wrenching hour of terror was mesmerizing and heartbreaking, this episode is back to more methodical storytelling. “Past Perfect” asks a lot of questions and even sets up the big reveal regarding the Kid’s identity, but it also goes a little too slow at times, especially when it comes to revisiting Ruth Deaver’s story, which is basically non-existent this week....
The story begins in Butte, Idaho, where a blonde pigtailed girl is cycling through town to be run over by a security truck. The excellent Gary Cole appears and offers to drive her to hospital, at which point it becomes obvious that this is a con and this man is her father! Chuck becomes suspicious when Sarah announces that she’s having a ‘personal’ night off, so he trails her to a restaurant where she’s dining with her father....
5.2 Chuck Versus the Bearded Bandit Before we got to that twist, this wasn’t a great episode, and was generally hard work to watch. That’s mostly because the writers seem to have hit some immovable objects with their characters, which they seem unable or unwilling to navigate. Where Jeff and Lester were once the highlight of this show, they’re now relegated to a somewhat obtuse gag that’s generally not that funny....
“We’re actually developing a true, dedicated Cloverfield sequel,” Abrams told journalists at CinemaCon (via Variety). It’s unclear what he means by “true” and “dedicated.” On the one hand, it could mean that the next Cloverfield will be a direct sequel to the original monster flick. More likely, Abrams means that the next film won’t just be recycled from an unrelated movie, as was the case with 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was originally a project titled “The Cellar,” or The Cloverfield Paradox, which was conceived as The God Particle....

The film opens with this character establishing moment before skipping forward three years in time to find Howard considerably more withdrawn from the world. His six-year-old daughter has tragically passed away and his company is suffering as a result of his days spent building elaborate domino set-ups in his office instead of engaging with clients. If this doesn’t sound like the film that the trailers sold you, then welcome to the party....

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live, WWE presented a three-part vignette that was essentially a mini-documentary, detailing the background behind the Bryan-Miz feud dating back to 2009, when Miz was Bryan’s “pro” on the first season of NXT. It’s a similar tactic that UFC and professional boxing uses all the time. HBO airs behind-the-scenes shows on boxer prep ahead of big fights … they call it “24/7” and there’s one planned for an upcoming fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin....
Dark Matter Season 2, Episode 1 In the space of one episode, Dark Matter has broadened the scope of its world to a greater extent than in the whole of season 1. That’s not to say that the drama onboard the Raza wasn’t compelling; it just didn’t adequately give a sense of the complexity of the universe in which the nameless crew was operating. By separating the team into different storylines and bringing their non-number names to the forefront, “Welcome to Your New Home” initiated a satisfying new direction for season 2 while still picking up right where the story left off....
1.3 The Devil in the Dark This was generally good until they all went underground for the ‘bug hunt’, where it all became heavily dictated by Syfy budget constraints. The bugs themselves seemed inspired by those in Starship Troopers, and the CGI of them wasn’t poor, what we saw of them. Except their ultimate demise was cut short, and so was an early action sequence with them and Datak Tarr....
Honestly, there really isn’t even that much to discuss this week. The episode mostly pertains to Dexter tidying up loose ends. We spend lots of time talking about the move and saying goodbyes with people like Batista, Jamie, Chief Matthews, and Deb. These scenes don’t carry the emotional weight they should though, but maybe that’s due to Dexter and his lack of emotion. Still, the goodbyes to Miami Metro are a little flat and tedious....

So we’ve got the same characters, obviously, in each season with some new guests and stuff, but a completely different type of thing going on....
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Season 2 Episode 2 Now that we’re into the second episode of the second season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, it’s good to see the central mystery starting to take shape with most of the key players on the case. The strength of this show lies in its ability to juggle several storylines and not lose the viewer with its complex twists and turns and its pervasive unknowns....
7.1 Asylum Of The Daleks At some point, once the dust has settled around Asylum Of The Daleks, it might be worth us all having a big old chat about what’s an ‘acceptable spoiler’. Because, as you probably worked out, a quite massive one managed to get to the transmission of the episode fully intact. At the advanced screening we were lucky enough to attend, Steven Moffat specifically requested it be kept under wraps, and fortunately, everyone complied....
7.2 Dinosaurs On A Spaceship And, as the episode’s title suggests, there’s a spaceship and some dinosaurs involved. With a tip or two of the hat to Jurassic Park, the scene is set for a near hour-long story, and quite an enjoyable one. It’s tailored more in the direction of a broad family audience than a hardened Who fan, but it’s hard to argue with that. If the plan with Doctor Who series 7 continues to be to give us a blockbuster episode every week, then it’s best to count Dinosaurs On A Spaceship as the enjoyably daft one....
The Silurian Gift is one of the Quick Reads series, clocking in at 99 pages and setting you back but one pound of your sterling currency. Featuring a well-written Eleventh Doctor travelling solo, it is reminiscent of an abridged Target novelisation. Indeed, throw in more back story for all of the characters and you might well have something approaching Malcolm Hulke’s original Cave Monsters novel in length. Certainly, in terms of plot, the Silurians are yet to move on from the arc established in their first and best story....
But what of 190484? There were some fascinating suggestions, including a possible reference to Winston Smith’s diary in George Orwell’s 1984, the date of a UFO sighting in East Anglia and both a jazz musician and an Israeli engineer who lived from 1904-84. Which indeed it does – though I still prefer the idea that 19/04/84 marked a significant event in the Dalek/Movellan war… The reason I originally got in touch with Matt, however, was due to the use of a rather familiar font around Space Station Chasm Forge in this week’s episode, Oxygen; a lot of the signage is in Microgramma (or the very similar Eurostile), a font many readers will associate with its extensive use in space-based sitcom Red Dwarf....
If The Stolen Earth pumped us up with excitement, then Journey’s End eventually, after some promise, took a pin and slowly deflated us. Because as the episode wound itself into its back third, once all the scores seemed to have been settled, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be the classic series finale we’d been teased with. And while it was better than last year’s The Last Of The Time Lords (even if it didn’t necessarily feel like it immediately after the end credits), this was still a major missed opportunity, and a real disappointment....
It’s probably fair to say that there’s some scepticism surrounding the use of the Daleks in Doctor Who. Granted, they’re the show’s most iconic monsters, and granted, their mere presence guarantees some pretty brisk business down at Toys R Us. Yet more than once, the quality of the stories has taken second place to the desire to bring the infamous pepperpots back to the screen (with the low point being the still amazingly bad Dalek/Human hybrid)....
