The news came from the Franzen-Davis funeral home in Livingston, Montana and was first reported by TMZ (but has since been confirmed by Deadline). It is unclear at the moment how she died, but how she lived was as an outspoken and larger than life figure who found a unique perch in 1970s and ‘80s pop culture. While the movie received mixed reviews, Kidder was constantly praised, including by the New York Times’ notoriously tough Janet Maslin who called Kidder “the life of the party” in that film and all her others....

4.12 Hot Potato Soup Hot Potato Soup saw the return of the Agents Koenig this week as Patton Oswalt returns in multiple roles. Meanwhile, Doctor Radcliffe hires a group of some pretty badass inhuman hating Russian mercs to help abduct the Koenigs and find the location of the Darkhold. Coulson gives the Koenigs the Darkhold for safe keeping, but sadly, at the beginning of the episode, Radcliffe’s crew abducts Sam Koenig and the hunt is on....

4.15 Self Control For four seasons now, Marvel Studios’ inaugural series has hovered around greatness but never quite achieved that milestone. Think about it, when Agents Of SHIELD began, it was a show that continued the story of the likable SHIELD agent dude that Loki killed in The Avengers, and that was pretty much it. People were expecting the ABC actioner to be an extension of the Marvel films, but it soon become apparent it would be movie-adjacent at best....

It starts with Merlin, Arthur and other nameless red-shirted knights hunting a creature in the woods which is actually more than a match for them. As the CGI abominations we’ve been subjected to go, this is actually one of the better ones, even if the concept of a cobra head on a giant leopard body is entirely preposterous. Sir Johnny-run-slowly is killed, and everyone else breathes a sign of relief that it’s not them who gets to scream out of shot....

Again going with the cheap option (i.e. no special effects) this episode does actually succeed as a 45 minute action adventure show, digging a little deeper into the characters and, for maybe the first time, actually having some movement forward character and plot-wise. In all honesty, Merlin takes a back seat this week as Lancelot’s presence is felt on a greater scale and Arthur’s hot-headed nature and growing affection for Gwen take centre stage....

To be clear: Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) most definitely need wedding dates. Tired of their thoughtless partying ruining family get-togethers, the two brothers’ long-suffering parents (Stephen Root and Stephanie Faracy) decree that they must find themselves a pair of nice girls to bring to their sister’s wedding in Hawaii. The film presents itself as ‘based on a true story, sort of’, which is one way of saying that screenwriters Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien (who previously co-wrote the Bad Neighbours movies) have taken a scripting assignment for a movie based on a Craigslist advert and turned it into a surprising showcase for funny women....

Impressive as that accolade may be, it is not necessarily suited to the big screen. Turner’s paintings are glorious widescreen landscapes full of vivid colours, but they are also just that: paintings. Mr Turner summons up a few magical transitions that turn oil and paint into the raw natural beauty of mountains and countryside but the form is fundamentally limited. The creative process of spending weeks, months or years on one canvas is hardly the most cinematic of subjects, so director Mike Leigh and Timothy Spall (as Turner, of course) deserve credit for giving it as much energy and authenticity as they do....

1.9 No Ordinary Anniversary But in the list of complaints I have about this show currently, I can now add gapping plot holes to them. One of the most obvious was at the outset, where Jim rescues someone from a burning building and discovers that he’s flameproof. Except they make no explanation as to why his clothes didn’t combust, even if Jim didn’t. Perhaps they need to introduce an ‘Edna’ character, so they can have appropriate and specially resistant outfits?...

It is, after all, their first night as a married couple and all roads lead to what’s supposed to happen on that mattress. Both Florence and Edward are understandably awkward to varying degrees, but as the evening progresses it becomes apparent that one of them is just not ready — and may never be ready — for the supposed bliss of getting between the conjugal sheets. Edward is a history grad student from a working class family whose mother (Anne-Marie Duff) has brain damage but whose household is still a loving one — even if his future mother-in-law sniffs at them a bit....

Sometimes I worry that the writers of Once Upon a Time have developed the technology to record my innermost desires without my knowledge or consent. I am not paranoid, I am just proposing a logical supposition based on the fact that tonight they had Deadwood’s Calamity Jane playing Little Bo Peep, cockney warlord. While I can’t, admittedly, say that this was a specific dream of mine, seeing it on screen tonight made it abundantly clear that this was something my heart needed to witness....

1.10 This Little Light Taking place primarily over the course of one horrific night, the episode shines a light on the approaching storm and the principals forced to weather it. The decision of director Loni Peristere to allow each scene a chance to really develop touches us immediately via the opening eight minute extended sequence in which we find the aftermath of Mark’s murder and his bloody wife staring at her hands like Lady Macbeth....

Let the little girl dance, they might scream in the fifties. Penny Dreadful explores the life of the demimonde and demimondaine in the latest episode. Demimonde means half world in French, it was coined by Alexandre Dumas, the son of the Three Musketeers writer, in a comedy he wrote in 1855 called Le Demi-Monde. Demimonde did what we’d all like to do we if could afford it. They drank, did drugs, gambled and spent lots of cash....

I don’t know what happened in the Power Rangers Super Megaforce writers room the day this episode was written. They had just come off a two parter that, while amazing, was more of a finale to Megaforce than an episode of Super Megaforce. So they come back and just decide, “You know what? Let’s actually do something awesome. Let’s show the characters out of suit doing things. Let’s have not only unmorphed fighting but helmetless fighting as well....

Believing he has to show off another cool invention to get the scholarship, David begins hunting around in the attic and basement of his parents’ house for inspiration. David’s father, it turns out, was a scientist himself before his untimely death around David’s seventh birthday. Among his father’s old stuff, David finds the plans for something called Project Almanac – a top-secret time travel device his dad decided to hide before he met his maker....

The series is beginning to really gather pace now after the scene-setting and character-bedding first couple of episodes and for the first time we caught a glimpse of how these people are all connected. An asylum was the scene, fittingly, for this black comedy, and we got to see nurse Joy, dwarf actor Robert, blind-eBayer Robert and serial killer David, all under the watchful eye of Mr Jolly. That’s Jolly, not Jelly, which was a key plot point of this episode....

Against this backdrop comes Pulse, a pilot for a planned BBC3 series that takes the hospital setting of shows like Casualty and uses it as a springboard for a visceral, blood-soaked and sometimes blackly comic horror-drama. In fact, Pulse is quite possibly the most gory television show in BBC history. Director James Hawes seldom pulls his punches, with every throbbing vein, pulsating internal organ and gout of arterial spray depicted in hideous detail....

“Films are better with friends, or so a well known phone operator would have us believe, but it’s true and there’s nothing better than watching movies with like-minded mates. But what if you don’t have any mates? Or, more specifically, any mates that like the same movies as you? Even though geek has become chic, the chances of finding someone with the right nerd credentials to share in your movie experience are increasingly slim....

1.11 Bucky Fuckin’ Dent The shadow of child abuse has hung over Ray Donovan from the outset. We’ve primarily seen the after-effects through the situation of Bunchy, his alcoholism and self-hatred, his abortive attempts at seeking meaningful help from support groups (he can thank his Pa for ruining that one), his inability to engage in proper adult relationships (this week he rather sweetly self-diagnoses as ‘sexual anorexic) and the sheer inadequacy of pecuniary compensation....
