As Angela Darmody draws him, he slips his mask, literally and figuratively, and lets us see the real him. The story of his self-estrangement from his sister is heartbreaking, particularly so as it is punctuated by close ups of his broken face....

3.6 Ging Gang Goolie We’re at about the halfway stage in season three now, and it has been motoring along fairly nicely, due in no small part to the actions of Gyp Rosetti. I had found him irritating to begin with, but over the course of the past few episodes he has emerged as a great antagonist, remaining ahead of the curve at every step, not least of all when fending off last week’s violent attack....

What makes Castle such a great New York character is his knowledge of the city and its people. Right away, Rick is sure that the body found is Vince because he recalls the famed mobster going missing in ’78. There was a turf war between the Carcano and Bianchi crime families in the seventies and Vince was at the center of it....

7.16 The Wrong Stuff One of the things some of the commenters on past reviews have pointed out, you almost always know, much like a Scooby Doo mystery, whodunit on Castle because Castle rarely varies: it’s the first suspect we meet—the one who inevitably is rejected because he or she has an alibi. This week’s episode, The Wrong Stuff, may just be the right stuff because it sticks to this formula but plays with it in such a way to truly surprise....

8.18 Backstabber This week, Hayley was solidly inducted into the ranks of Castle regulars by getting an episode about her. The purpose of these kinds of episodes is to give us background and real texture to the characters that surround Beckett and Castle. They explain why these characters are who they are—because while Castle has a fine cast, it’s not really an ensemble show. Rick and Kate get character development of one kind or another in almost every episode....

When you think they’ve exhausted the dumb spy concept they come along and throw a narrative curve-ball the likes of which defies predictability. It gets worse for Sarah when Chuck discovers her real name – ‘Jenny’ – and invites Heather and her hubby Mark to a dinner date after his intersect power flashes on her spouse. Meanwhile Big Mike has gone on a fishing trip from Buy More, leaving Lester and his Bay City Rollers hairstyle in charge....

4.10 Chuck Versus The Leftovers Chuck is at its very best when it heavily indulges itself in referencing movies and other shows, and this week they returned to one of this production’s favourites, Die Hard.The construction of a plot and scenario that has Morgan crawling through air-conditioning ducts in bare feet is both hilarious and clever. But it wouldn’t work without the quite brilliant Timothy Dalton, playing the Gruber-esque Alexei Volkoff....

1.1 The Beast Rises Damien’s pilot episode is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to review. Usually an opinion should be clear by the end of an episode, aided by hurriedly scrawled notes taken during the viewing. And if I was going to base my review on those notes alone, then I would say that Damien is an awful television show. Objectively, that is the case. The dialogue is clunky and cliched, the characters are either bland or inconsistent and it’s shot in an alternately murky/shaky way that makes it a little unpleasant to watch....
