Long before he was a Netflix star, The Punisher, created by writer Gerry Conway and artist John Romita, Sr. for Marvel Comics in the ’70s was first brought to life on the big screen by Dolph Lundgren in 1989 and was then by Thomas Jane in the 2004 film The Punisher. A sequel, The Punisher 2, was written by Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy who was writing for The Shield on FX at the time....
2.5-6 Death Of The Doctor Though not up to the standard of Pixar’s most recent crowning achievement (what is?), Death Of The Doctor certainly paddles in the same waters in its attempts to use our own memories of the broader Who mythos to create a stirring and moving piece of drama in its wn right. Despite its undoubted success, SJA has always existed, unlike Torchwood, as more of an adjunct to the main series than a full-blown ‘stand on its own two feet’ spin-off....
1.4 Changeling If you’ve stuck with The Shannara Chronicles up to its current fourth instalment, firstly well done and secondly, congratulations because your perseverance has paid off. Changeling signals a marked improvement upon previous offerings and goes some way to amending the considerable missteps made in the series thus far. The main reason for this upturn in form is the more self-contained nature of the episode that sees our band of protagonists attempt to uncover an enemy agent in their midst....
The Strain Season 3 Episode 10 It’s hard to believe another season of The Strain has come and gone but here we are, and my friends, this week, there were loses. Last week, we had to say goodbye to Justine Feraldo and Angel De Plata, two brave warriors from profoundly different backgrounds that selflessly gave their lives so their friends and their city could live. We’ve all been there, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the issue of a failing relationship handled quite as well as it was in last night’s The Trip. A telephone conversation between Coogan and girlfriend Mischa portrayed everything you needed to know about the state they’re in, in seconds. The looks on the faces, the awkward ramblings, the questions of infidelity hanging in the air – the end has already come to pass for the pair, although the attempts to keep on going will be familiar to most....
Actually, it’s the last. Even if you don’t want to watch anything then go and have a look, it’s really quite fun – and we can also now see what the most watched programmes are (Ashes to Ashes. Alright if you liked Life on Mars, but otherwise serves as proof that having a high concept doesn’t instantaneously make a good drama.) More importantly, That Mitchell and Webb Look has come back having apparently undergone a change on the scale of iPlayer itself – it’s now actually funny....
4.7 My Brother’s Keeper That kind of makes Elena’s dithering a little less annoying, but the same can’t be said of the writers. I’ve always been in grudging support of the show’s central love triangle, but this week’s twist is a bit like a spitting in the face of half of your fan-base. Elena not being able to decide between her suitors is one thing, but to give Elena/Damon shippers what they’ve been waiting for, only to take it away in a really sneaky and contrived way, isn’t the way to court favour among your viewers....
5.1 I Know What You Did Last Summer Judging by this first episode, it’s a possibility, but part of that means that the show is simply continuing on in the same manner. The only fresh elements of the premiere either involve Elena and Damon’s relationship or the big college adventure with Elena and Caroline, but otherwise this is business as usual. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course, and a couple of the problems people had with season four have been improved upon over the break....
3.15 This Sorrowful Life Rick is the last person you want making a life-or-death decision, but he’s the man who met with the Governor, he’s the man who holds Michonne’s fate in his hands, and he’s the man who has to decide if the chance at peace is worth the life of a relatively innocent person who has proven herself to be a valuable addition to the group. Can Rick be trusted enough to pull together a group to help him make decisions without choosing the absolutely wrong people to carry out the task at hand?...
6.5 Now I’m not sure if the issue is me or the characters themselves. I get that we’re supposed to be in the shoes of Rick and Daryl and the rest; we’re meeting a whole host of new people and expected to remember who they are, just like they are. They’re not the familiar people; even someone relatively underdeveloped like Tara or Rosita is more familiar than the average Alexandrian, and that seems like also part of the design....
As Blu-ray started to pull ahead of HD DVD in the next Battle of the New Formats, production companies started to try the same trick. Increasingly, all the good extras are reserved for the Blu-ray, in the hope of encouraging fans to upgrade once again, with DVDs often vanilla discs, or very nearly. It’s always pleasant, then, to see a DVD release of new material that still offers a good selection of extra material, the sort of thing you can’t get from Netflix, on what is now the old-fashioned DVD format....
It’s 2007, in the middle of the night, and you’re aimlessly flipping through the television channels. It’s all identical bland wash that causes your eyes to roll back and catatonia to set in. But then you stumble upon this surreal explosion of color and awkwardness. Are these two buffoons for real? Is it a gag? It doesn’t even matter because your perception of television and comedy is never going to be the same again....
It’s an undeniable fact that movies based on video games and video games based on movies rarely work. The two similarly skewing industries are like magnets, constantly repelled from each other whenever they are near. The trio of movie tie-in games released by Activision and High Moon Studios in conjunction with Michael Bay’s Transformers films have, for the most part, lived up to that unfortunate legacy, but the War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games (also developed by High Moon) lived in their own universe and drew critical acclaim....
The NFL Draft gives sportswriters and football fans an idea of what the coming season will look like. Financial analysts and reporters breathlessly await major corporations’ quarterly earnings reports so they know where to invest and what to cover next year. Political reporters are presumably just always looking forward to a stiff drink at the end of the day. For television and entertainment journalists, the network upfronts are the clearest indicator of the changing winds within the TV industry....
One of the elements of V that I find myself really enjoying as we go into the second episode is the paranoia. Really, one of the things the show has done incredibly well with the sleeper alien cell angle is establish that pretty much anyone can, and just might be, a Visitor. I mean, in the first episode we had two surprising reveals of various Visitors, so it’s obvious that V is living by the old Joe Bob Briggs Drive-In Rules, except replace “Anybody can die at any moment” with “Anybody can be a secret lizard”....
4.18 Revenge The one between Ragnar’s family and Harald and Halfdan has always been tenuous, now crossing over into actual treachery as it appears that the brothers have arranged for their surrogate Egil to attack the trading village in their absence. One has to wonder if they do this merely because the army will be gone or so, if the attempt miscarries, they cannot be held responsible. I’m actually looking forward to watching her fight off Egil more than just about any other conflict in the show....
Which means that We’re The Millers, the latest film from Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber, instantly feels a little different. Because whilst We’re The Millers has quite a few problems, it does actually deliver on the key reason for existence for a comedy movie: it’s funny. It’s mainly gentle chuckles, but with a couple of good guffaws. And then, there’s a fun selection of outtakes over the end credits. Nothing complicated, nothing over the top....
“I don’t want to be alone” wheezed Len Harper in the final minute of What Remains. ‘No-one does, do they? That’s pretty much what this whole thing’s been about’ he might have added were his guts not making a bloody mess of the hall carpet at the time. Detective Harper’s empathy with murder victim Melissa eventually became so complete that he expired (or was at least on his way to it) just a floor below her, stabbed by the girlfriend of her killer....
The last time fire that destroyed sets on the Lot was in 1990. It was far worse than this one. BTW, reports that the film vault is burned are not correct, to the best of my knowledge. The video vault went, but that’s a whole other thing. So….. New York Street, New England Street (BACK TO THE FUTURE town square/clock tower) and the King Kong gag are all located on the back lot....
