It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, whose 13th season premieres September 5th, has always been a bit of an outlier, and that includes what period of the show’s life cycle we can identify as “best.” Unlike most long-running shows, Always Sunny gets better with age. The show began as a Seinfeld homage before (d)evolving into something weirder, more obscene, and funnier. It began to suss out an identity as Danny DeVito joined the cast in season two, mutating with every new batch of episodes, and growing less and less tethered to anything resembling reality....

Last season we got to see the guys really test the waters with women when they met the woman of their dreams online, but earlier in that episode, we see the guys in action trying to pick up chicks at the bar. Their “technique” is horrendous; they’re overtly sexual, punny, and aggressively triple-team verbally assault their potential dates. They are horrible with girls, yet they spend this episode trying to find the right suitor to woo a down-on her luck Alice because they “know women....

The Inbetweeners movies are often cited as examples of this working, but their in-built audience was a lot closer to the original than Ab Fab‘s is. This time, we open with Mia Wasikowska’s Alice out at sea and very much in the real world. She’s a boat captain now, instantly demanding your attention with her inventive problem solving skills and action prowess. One of the criticisms of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland was that the Hatter and his chums overshadowed Alice somewhat, and it’s easy to read this scene as James Bobin (Burton’s successor in the director’s chair) attempting to remedy that right off the bat....

4.10 Orphans No more is that on display than in Orphans. This is the year that Ryan Murphy promised the world that the four seasons of American Horror Story are all connected, and the presence of Pepper in Freak Show was the first whispered connection. It’s fitting that Pepper gets an episode all to herself, and that James Wong—an AHS writer from the very beginning—is the one to draw those threads together....

Ron Burgundy’s since become one of Will Ferrell’s most beloved characters, and while Paramount was reluctant to finance a sequel for many years, the persistence of Adam McKay and Anchorman’s cast – not to mention a devoted following of fans – have ultimately led to Anchorman 2. Burgundy, keen to get to the number one spot in the ratings in order to get back at his now estranged wife, gathers up his old news team – Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Champ Kind (David Koechner) and Brick Tamland (Steve Carrell) – and sets about bringing America a different form of journalism: news as entertainment, with all the police chases, cute animals and salacious gossip he can find....

Adam Reed and Matt Thompson’s outrageous animated series started its run all the way back in 2009 as a humble parody of the spy genre. As both the sensibilities of the show’s characters and creators have grown and changed, the series has embraced experimentation by rebooting and “de-booting” the show several times over. This strategy has slowly turned into the norm for the show, which allows Archer to take risks like slip into a film noir parody during last season’s Archer: Dreamland....

Given that this is the penultimate episode of Archer Vice, I find myself entertaining the idea that next season’s announced return to espionage would include the Isis gang turning this country into their own new dysfunctional office space where Sterling could have crazy adventures as spying for His Majesty’s Secret Service. But bah, who am I kidding? Cyril couldn’t keep the lights on for more than three weeks, especially with the Krieger triplets running around with a nuclear missile aimed at potentially millions of citizens or, worse, the Upper East Side!...

2.9 The Gorgon’s Gaze With Pasiphae now in a position of power, the Gods have warned that they are angry and have spoken through new Oracle, Cassandra. Unhappy with the condemnation of her actions, Pasiphae is advised that the solution is clear – get Ariadne to pass on the crown and kill the young queen. There’s little joy in the heroes’ camp, either, as Jason, Pythagoras and Medusa fight inner turmoil as they realise the insurmountable task they face if they wish to save Ariadne and the fate of Atlantis....

This review contains spoilers. Is Awake the most frustrating show on air? After last week’s step backwards, this week goes one worse with a dull procedural episode devoid of any mythology or forward motion. For a show on the bubble, and in very real danger of being axed, you’d think now was the time to up their game. This may sound like a rant, but for fans of any show, it’s thoroughly annoying to see characters and plots flatlining so close to crunch time....

4.4 Innocent Might Be A Bit Of A Stretch Maybe that’s why the sudden reveal of the killer as a Satanist cult seems kind of jarring. On paper, it should work; this is a universe where violent Native American tribes, an Amish community, Neo-Nazis, corrupt Navy SEALS and a drug empire all operate within kilometres of each other, and each new addition to Banshee’s growing roster of ludicrous factions has generally been a delight....

After getting over the shock that the man she’s dating, Deputy Shelby, is a sex slave fiend, Norma doesn’t take it well. She sits, semi-comatose on the porch while Norman and Emma discuss a solution. Emma thinks she needs water. Norman doesn’t know what to do, other than giving her water won’t help. Way to be useful, Norman. Norma runs away, grabs the car keys and drives off to confront Shelby....

Obviously everything looks better. The web-based Battlelog system has been given a facelift, and under the cosmetics there’s real functionality to help users to easily access the wealth of information, scores and stats available. In game, the third version of the Frostbite engine is handling things, and if you’ve got a relatively healthy system spec on your hands you’ll notice the difference. The campaign mode is as cinematic as as ever, and everything looks simply sublime....
