iZombie Season 3 Episode 10 While it’s definitely still experimenting, iZombie seems to have found a great way to balance season-long arcs with the murder/brain of the week in this particularly pun-riddled episode, and it did not come how I expected it. A flashback brain certainly would have felt less episodic, but using multiple brains from the same case, from people who died over time, really bolsters the serialized storytelling and helped tie some of these narrative threads closer together....

The documentary Calling All Earthlings documentary follows George Van Tassel, an airplane mechanic who mixed alien intelligence with the designs of inventor Nikola Tesla to come up with The Integratron. Paid for, in part, by legendary billionaire recluse and one-time filmmaker Howard Hughes, the structure was a time machine powered by electromagnetic energy built next to a big rock considered sacred by Native Americans in the Mohave Desert. While there were no local witnesses to the story of a landed space craft a few miles from the Joshua Tree park, residents of the desert town of Landers, California, testified to strange lights, craft, and cat-like creatures with glowing red eyes....

Hummingbird (known as Redemption in other territories) though sees Statham back to more the more dramatic, character based roles that have peppered his career, much to the surprise of the casual viewer I imagine. Certainly in press circles there has been much made of his break from the action movie mould into more serious acting, but it’s worth pointing out that all of his Guy Ritchie collaborations (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and Revolver) as well as the likes of The Bank Job and London were all a world apart from the glorious insanity of the Crank and Transporter sequels, that really helped to cement his career as an action icon....

From John Carter’s opening frame, it’s clear that Stanton’s brought all the passion he has for the source material to bear on this lavish adaptation. In a dizzying aerial battle, we’re introduced to a mythical version of Mars (here called Barsoom), a dying planet of warring factions and weird creatures, ornate aircraft with dragonfly wings, towering architecture and parched deserts. Thanks to the manipulation of the mischievous, evil Matai Shang (Mark Strong) two cities of rival Red Martians, Zodanga and Helium, are locked in perpetual war....

This biography proclaims that Joss Whedon is the Geek King of the Universe. That’s a really big title. For someone to earn that kind of title I would expect them to be bursting with films and books and ideas, to the point where they are constantly creating and recreating. I’m picturing the kind of person who is overwhelming in their intensity and dedication, but also really pleased to just be part of making some amazing products....

This time, the pair have put together a sort-of-romantic comedy, one that sees Sandler as a plastic surgeon who, in his earlier days, was about to get married until he heard his wife-to-be making disparaging remarks. Sander’s character, Danny, keeps the ring, though, and finds it’s an effective way to get lots of women into bed. Sandler co-produced the movie, incidentally. Fast forward, then, to his successful plastic surgery practice, which just happens to employ Jennifer Aniston’s Katherine....

Killing Eve Season 1, Episode 7 Who is Villanelle? It’s a question Eve is obsessed with, Konstantin has maybe figured out, and Carolyn is lying about knowing anything about. It’s also the question that drives this latest episode of Killing Eve in particular, a stirring character study into who Oksana was and the Villanelle she’s become. It’s a lesson Konstantin has obviously already learned, even if he was foolish enough to leave Villanelle in prison....

This review contains spoilers. After last week’s episode I lamented the lack of quietness and subtlety when compared to previous instalments, but now that’s gone completely out the window. “The Witch Is Coming” takes place within an entirely different universe and crazy-scale than the first four episodes of the series so, in the interest of not becoming as unhinged as Tippi, it’s worth just looking at where we are now....

Janet Varney: I definitely had an awareness of the original series (Avatar: The Last Airbender), I was a fan, but I wasn’t all the way through it. As I got closer to getting this role during the audition process, I had to kind of pull back and NOT watch it, because I started to really, really want it....

Legion Season 2 Episode 8 In the opening moments of “Chapter 16,” Syd reminds David that the monk is dead, and it’s a good thing she did, because if David is anything like the most of the audience, they’ve likely long forgotten that the monk of Mi-go jumped off the top of Division 3 headquarters a couple weeks back. We’ve been away from the main plot, the race for Amhal Farouk’s body, for what feels like ages, and thankfully, getting back to the story brings out the best in Legion....

Life Itself is an affectionate yet unflinchingly honest portrait of the late writer and the legacy he’s left behind, and the calibre of the people both in front and behind the camera – Steven Zaillian and Martin Scorsese are producers, while Scorsese and Werner Herzog are among the interviewees – is evidence of just how respected and admired Ebert was and still is. Ebert’s youthful energy (he was the youngest film critic in America at the time) coincided with the renewed sense of creative vigour in American cinema: he was a young writer at a point when Hollywood seemed young again....

War After a duff closing crop of episodes, War reminded me how much I have enjoyed this season, and what a shame it is that this is likely to be the last time we see Lights, Johnny, Pops, Theresa, Brennan, and Barry K Word. Obviously, the focal point of War was Lights’ long-awaited rematch with Death Row Reynolds. It’s the fight that we’ve been building towards this entire season, and in dramatic terms, it didn’t disappoint, with Lights having to attempt to overcome every obstacle in the boxing film cliché handbook: a undefeated and seemingly unstoppable opponent, a bent ref, a hostile promoter, an aging body, a damaged brain, the knowledge that his previous opponents had been gimmes, and the timely reoccurrence of a previous injury....

Locke is a single actor in a single (moving) location piece, not unlike Buried (with Ryan Reynolds) and All Is Lost (with Robert Redford). The single location in this case however is a car, as Hardy’s Ivan Locke leaves his place of work where he’s supervising the following morning’s arrival of hundreds of trucks carrying concrete, to head down towards London. One aside: if you’re in any way interested in the sensitivities of concrete in building work, add a star to the score at the bottom....

It features a story we’ve seen time and time again in our entertainment. An aging mother from flyover country (just because Bakersfield is in California doesn’t mean you can’t fly over it) must drive several hours to bail out her son from prison for criminal mischief. While in the hotel, awaiting her son’s hearing, she has a meet-cute with one of her son’s criminal copatriot’s carpet salesman father. It’s simple, it’s conventional, it’s perfect....

The only couple that we actually see together on this Mad Men Valentine’s Day is Pete and real estate agent Bonnie, and I’m pretty sure they’re just fooling around. The only people that receive flowers are Joan (they’re from Roger and addressed to Kevin) and Shirley, Peggy’s secretary, and she gets reassigned for showcasing her fiancé’s gift (more on that in a minute). Mad Men couldn’t be any more romantically cold at the moment even if it were an arranged marriage, or Don Draper at the end of the last episode sitting on his balcony....

Megan’s idea of Don starting over seems to be a restart without her involved. When Don gets a call from Megan’s agent with the news that Megan’s been unconfident and incredibly desperate at auditions, Don flies out to surprise her. Her surprise and delight lasts only as long as a quick lovemaking session before Megan discovers why Don is really there. She accuses him of being like a concerned father, not a husband, and worse, she has suspicions that he’s lying....

Here we are at the end of a very polarizing season of Masters of Sex, and whether you’ve been fully invested or ambivalent to the season’s events, there’s no denying that it’s exciting to finally see Masters and Johnson putting the finishing touches on their forever-running study. It’s especially exciting since the last time Masters shared his work in a big way, it cost him his job. Whether their work is accepted or not, this is a big moment in the scope of the series....

“We should have got the fast passes,” says one of your party. You know they’re right, but it already cost a ridiculously large amount to get in and at the time you flat-out refused to pay any more through indignation. Finally you’re on the film. “This had better be fucking good now,” says the audience, united as one. “She’s wicked. I think I’m going to give her this ring,” says Orlando, Florida....

Merlin’s mum arrives at Camelot after a bad man called Kanan (Alexander Siddig) turns up and demands maize with menaces. We know he’s bad because he’s got a very obvious scar, and he’s been to Ye Olde School of moustache twirling. But Merlin must go to help, and he’s not alone. Gwen and Morgana decide to accompany him, so Kanan is going to be really worried. Actually, to make this a sliver more appropriate, it turns out that Morgana wears chain mail under those long dresses and is a female warrior, something they’ve failed to mention in the previous nine stories....
