Milk. Beloved source of calcium and favoured additive to hot beverages. As we see in the short vignette that opens this week’s instalment, Brian’s life revolves around milk, from his morning bowl of cornflakes to his lowly job in a cafe. When he gets struck by the storm, he’s a bit short changed when it grants him power over any dairy products. Rather than cause a great deal of mischief in a maternity ward, he becomes a local celebrity and attracts high powered publicity agent Laura, who promises him the world....

While the theater chains believe this model is unsustainable, MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe was keen on sharing an internal statistic which says more about moviegoers’ habits than boiling down the short-term interest in MoviePass as merely an avenue to discounted tickets. The statistic in question is a weekly report on how many different titles MoviePass’ subscribers saw in a given week. I guessed under 10. Lowe countered with 200. It’s a confirmation of the hunger audiences have to check out a variety of movies, indies, foreign films, documentaries, and Oscar contenders—interests that extend far beyond tentpole franchises like Star Wars and Marvel....

3.1 Power Save Mode Okay, that’s probably not true. The ‘this was all a dream/hallucination/snowglobe’ hasn’t been attempted in a meaningful way since St. Elsewhere in 1988 and rightfully so. It’s cheap and it undercuts rule #1 in the television Hippocratic oath: What you’re seeing matters. Still, on Mr. Robot we often have a very little meaningful concept of exactly what we’re even seeing. Elliot is beyond an unreliable narrator....

3.6 Kill Process It’s not that season 3 has been bad thus far. This is still a show about a paranoid, reclusive hacker taking down the world economy with his imaginary friend/ghostdad after all. But season 3 has been, let’s say, deliberately paced. Hell, one could argue that Mr Robot, itself, has been deliberately paced since Elliot Alderson was dressed down in a villain monologue from Mr Robot in a frenetic Times Square post-hack in the season 1 finale....

My Hero Academia Episode 15 “One chance a year, three chances in a lifetime, no aspiring hero can afford to miss this festival!” “Roaring Sports Festival” throws a lot of quirk-filled action at the audience as the series begins to prepare for its next tournament, but there’s a rather poignant conversation that Izuku shares with All Might during the beginning of the episode. Feeling the pressure of the impending festival, Izuku begins to wonder if he really needs to go all out here since he has a rather cushy situation in the other aspects of the hero department....

Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness) plays the title character, a short-order cook in the small town of Pico Mundo who has an adoring girlfriend named Stormy (Addison Timlin) and an ability to see the dead as well as creatures named “bodachs” that cluster around those who are either going to die or somehow cause death to others. But rather than be frightened by what he sees, Odd (his actual first name – “Todd” was misprinted on his birth certificate) acts on it: in the opening scene the spirit of a dead girl leads Odd to a former schoolmate of his who killed her....

As each episode of Outcasts continues to build on the last, I can’t be the only one concluding that this is a show that’s getting progressively better and better. I can’t say that it’s building up confidence, but I’m not sure that it ever really lacked it. But it’s certainly a little more accessible than it was, and this latest episode was really very good indeed. For a couple of things happen in the first chunk of the episode....

How on earth do you begin to explain it? You kind of figured that plausibility wasn’t high on the agenda at the script meetings when the early stages saw the batshit crazy character, Dr Christian King, getting a download of a picture that would form the heart of the episode. The picture featured, if memory serves, a coffee cup, a Frisbee that doesn’t melt in fire, a mobile phone and whatever else the BBC could rustle up from the prop cupboard....

If we had to bet on any modern music act reviving the band movie as the Beatles had it, it would be the comedy group The Lonely Island, who first came to prominence through Saturday Night Live‘s Digital Shorts and have released a catalogue of catchy numbers with hilarious music videos. But for Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, it would have been almost too easy to loosely string together a number of their videos in a feature and it’s to their credit that their second big screen effort, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, is a perfectly silly parody of the kind of stage-managed documentaries that represent the genre at present....

3.8 The Tom/Brady One of the benefits to mixing up characters is that you create some crackling set pieces. With Starr and Jesse, the chemistry is obvious. They don’t dislike one another, at least on the surface, and unlike Featherstone and Tulip, their antagonism to one another is easily put aside in service of a bigger goal, or in this case killing a bunch of grail security officers in an elevator and shooting, but not killing, the Allfather....

6.4 Don’t Look Now & 6.5 She’s No Angel It makes a lot of sense from a narrative perspective – just listen to Scream‘s explanation of how a slasher flick can and can’t exist as long-form storytelling – but, as we approach the actual, real, genuine answer as to A’s identity, it’s hard to watch Alison DiLaurentis immediately believe her father when he tells her Charles is dead, or Hanna suddenly positive about Lesli Stone being A’s alter-ego....

6.3 This Episode Sucks Firstly, in these days of Twilight-fever, it was marvellous to see a vampire-themed episode with nary a tube of glitter in sight. As is usual with Psych, this episode was firmly rooted in its appreciation for all things 80s and 90s, and so we had callbacks to both Interview With The Vampire, Blackula, and (somewhat unexpectedly) Top Gun. In fact, probably the closest we came to an acknowledgement of the current trend towards pop culture bloodsuckers came with Gus’ run at True Blood....

6.4 The Amazing Psych-Man & Tap Man, Issue #2 The result is yet another strong episode (the third in a row, after the middling season opener), which shows that the cast and regular writer Saladin K Patterson – most recently seen penning last year’s Christmas special, The Bipolar Express, with James Roday – have lost none of their edge. It’s the stupidest, simplest jokes that get the biggest laughs: the spinning iPad-newspaper pastiche, the live-action onomatopoeia of the climactic fight scene, the “I know you know I’m not telling the truth… I know… you know…” shout out to the show’s theme song....

Action moves away from a central location, such as Royston Vasey in The League of Gentlemen, and now incorporates weird and wonderful (or wonderfully weird) characters from all over the UK. As you’d expect, the humour on display here is dark. Each of them receive a mysterious, anonymous letter saying ‘I know what you did…’ and it’s clear that they’re all hiding a dark secret – but what is it?...

This review contains spoilers. 4.23 The Host The Enterprise is taking the Trill ambassador Odan to mediate a dispute, and as part of the ship’s full-service medical package Dr Crusher has been giving him a lot of personal attention. They’re in love! It’s horrible. Crusher has just arranged to meet in Odan’s quarters for a little hypospray when he’s summoned to a meeting. And this being the Enterprise, you don’t want to miss a meeting otherwise you won’t have any clue what’s going on for the rest of the week....

It strikes me that the Robot Wars arena would be a good place to weather a nuclear apocalypse. While the outside world poofs into hot dust, the collective engineering expertise inside that Glaswegian warehouse could probably whip up a new civilisation inside the timeframe of a two hour repair window. Being awarded a victory isn’t the same as winning one outright. So much being left to the judges’ decision this week left episode five feeling flat....

1.3 Dead Man’s Party So, again, we pick up pretty much exactly where the last episode left off, with Simon being abducted by vampires who think Clary knows where the Mortal Cup is and quite fancy nicking it for themselves. That sense of continuity is quite nice; it can be disconcerting to feel like characters in a TV show are off having adventures we’re not seeing between our weekly episodes, though if they keep it up, the entire run of 13 episodes will end up taking place over about a week and a half in story time, which could also be quite strange....

A thoroughly soulless and at times woefully ill-judged feature, Show Dogs centres around a bizarre premise that can only be described as the pooch equivalent to Miss Congeniality. NYPD Rottweiler Max (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) reluctantly agrees to team up with FBI agent Frank Mosley (Will Arnett) in order to track down an exotic animal smuggling ring who they believe will strike at the upcoming Canini Invitational, a prestigious dog show based in Las Vegas....

So who would be your pick for the crucially important role of host? Would it be one of your more populist film historians like Mark Cousins, or David Thomson? Maybe a respected, passionate critic who is comfortable in front of the camera, like Mark Kermode, or Leonard Maltin? A director well-known for their investment in film preservation, like Martin Scorsese, or Alex Cox? Or perhaps someone who’s famously pro-digital, like George Lucas, or Robert Rodriguez?...
