A lot of the film’s success has to do with its monster, of course. Bill Skarsgard (Hemlock Grove) did the honors this time around, following up the iconic performance by Tim Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries. Skarsgard is formidable as Pennywise, less wacky perhaps, and certainly more feral. The monster is more visceral and less of a jokester. Skarsgard presents a true monster that you’d never dare mistake for a friendly clown....
On TV Such is Whedon’s ear for dialogue and love for his characters that it was always clear when he was behind an episode of his signature show. As for his best installment, contenders include the forth season coda Restless, a surreal exploration of the gang’s dreams, riddled with foreshadowing dialogue and images; The Body, where Buffy discovers her mother’s corpse and the gang learn of her death, and Once More, With Feeling, the ingenious musical episode featuring song and dance routines from the primary cast and the wonderful guest villain, Sweet....

2.12 Camelot/3000 Enter Ray Palmer, who gets to spend Camelot/3000Mary Sue-ing through Arthurian legend. It makes for a somewhat silly standalone-type episode, but isn’t that what Legends Of Tomorrow does best these days? Unlike more “serious” comic book adaptations, Legends doesn’t try to distance itself from unabashed passion that borders on the ridiculous. On the contrary, it encourages and celebrates it. That attitude both to its source material and to the superhero comic book genre in general continues to be one of this show’s biggest strengths....

After last week’s narrative detour for a beautifully executed episode of elsewhere David tales, Legion attempts to move forward with chaotic, motley results in “Chapter 15,” but it mixes in some solid highs to counteract its superfluous lows....
First of all, I was very skeptical about seeing an adaptation of this novel on the big screen when it was first announced a couple years ago. This book is my favorite novel of all time, so my expectations are hard to live up to. It is a very difficult concept to properly grasp on film, due to the fact that the two main characters are a boy and a tiger....
Infight I suppose I was tempting fate by singing the praises of new favourite character, Ed Romeo, last week. We may not be seeing much more of the charismatic, gravel-gargling trainer after this week, where the friction between him, Lights, and his family came to a flashpoint that may have put a serious dent in Lights’ preparation for the biggest fight of his life. I really think Lights Out has done a tremendous job of presenting us with a group of characters who are complex and unpredictable, yet totally believable at the same time....
“I believe you” Arnott told Denton at the close of this week’s Line Of Duty, and at the mid-point in this series, so do I. Episode three was a study in human disintegration. Between Denton descending symbolically through successive floors of police departments to her cell at the end of the last hour, to her hearing those words from Arnott at the end of this, she was systematically broken. Each time Denton appeared in front of that glass, a little more of her had been damaged and taken away....

Maniac Episode 2 For as intriguing as Maniac’s “premiere” episode was (can you call any one episode a premiere when they all debut at the same time?), its biggest drawback as an episode of television is that it wasn’t really an episode of television. Thankfully, that’s exactly what Maniac does with its second episode, “Windmills.” “Windmills” serves as a kind of second iteration of “The Chosen One!” where we’re able to see this alternative universe once again with fresh eyes....
4.1 The Ghost Remember Red Dwarf VIII, which opened with the entire crew of the eponymous spaceship being resurrected, leading Lister and co. to realise that they can’t carry on gallivanting around and doing whatever they like, as they had done for the previous seven years? That’s what the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere reminded me of. There’s now a boss who isn’t everyone’s BFF. There are new agents around every corner and nobody knows if they can trust them....
5.9 Best Laid Plans The story is split into two plots this week as Mack, Yo Yo, Flint, and the rest of the humans aboard Kasius’s slave station must fight for their survival while Coulson, Daisy, May, Fitz, Simmons, and Deke have to figure how to fly a decades old Zephyr off what is left of the Earth. Whew, where to begin? I guess we should discuss Mack’s rebellion. This week, Mack and company discover that Kasius has his station armed to blow at any moment....
Recently, his work has veered from the atrocious (Cassandra’s Dream) to the great (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), with a handful of tittersome morsels in between (Whatever Works, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger). He’s still working at an alarming rate, and is still quite happy to gaze at intellectual middle class types and their over-inflated personal problems. Midnight In Paris, the latest in what could be called Allen’s ‘tourist’ films, makes no claim at being anything else, starting as it does with an endless montage of Parisian vistas, a ‘day in the life’ overture which roots the audience in the French capital – its boulevards, its landmarks, its cultural history....
As promised by last week’s preview, it’s the Simon and Rudy show this time, as they go on a mission to uncover the details of the latter’s sexual escapades. This is the ‘safe sex’ message wrapped in a Misfits package, and there are some creative choices that are not only hilarious, but manage to actually drive the story forwards. This is the comedy episode I’ve been waiting for, and though extremely silly in places, it pushes the boundaries of our expectations, and is all the more entertaining for it....
By some measure, Sherlock Holmes is the most-adapted character of all time. This makes adaptations both harder to pull off in any kind of novel way, as well as doubly interesting to dissect as we have so many versions of the character and his storytelling universe to compare them to. Why did these storytellers make the choices they did? How do those choices change the story? What do they tell us about the original canon and, more importantly, what do they tell us about the cultural context of their making?...

No Ordinary Friends My faith in the concept behind this show has effectively been shaken, so I didn’t have any presumptions that the resumption of it would signal any significant change in direction. It didn’t take long for this story to entirely support my view, with a story that combined the very worst of No Ordinary Family‘s failings. It started well enough with Jim trying to stop an art thief, and then saving a man from being run over by a bus....
It didn’t matter how carefully a team’s mums had ironed their coordinated pastel short-sleeved shirts, or how diligently they made notes on their clipboards, the life of a dungeoneer was nasty, brutish and short. One false move was all it took for Treguard to emit an “ooh, nasty”, spell-cast D.I.S.M.I.S.S and send the questers back to Burton Upon Trent with their bum bags at half-mast. “No, Chris!” Poor Chris. He’s cast a spell to turn himself into a goblin, failed to locate Motley for the password, and, when his team attempt to use the causeway pattern as said password, he even says that in the wrong order....
