Was it a perfect premiere? I’ll start off with what was missing: action! I can’t fault the writers for that, though, because there was no room, no place I could suggest to put it. The only time the soundtrack ramped up the tempo was when Ethan ran into the woods (a short-lived chase) and when Molly erased the space station footage (frantic, but not exactly action-packed). That being said, I don’t regret the absence of overwrought excitement; I could just have used a bit more oomph in the narrative....

I’m tired of breaking down this show in detail, so I’m not going to bother this week, as it was typically all over the place. This could be an interesting President, because he’s allowed to play basketball without any security present, it seems. But for me the twist of this story is that Senator Clemente really represents our cynicism in where this show is going, which when you dissect what’s been presented so far, is pretty silly....

I’ll be upfront and admit that I’ve been looking forward to the return of this show in the way that I’d greet a reoccurrence of a virulent bladder infection. I’d hoped it would now have been consigned to the pile of shows entitled ‘experiments that didn’t work’, but, alas, it soldiers on. My frustration with FlashForward began early on, as it soon became apparent that, presented with an intriguing premise, the writers failed to grasp the core realities of what would happen if we all blacked out, and then engaged in this ‘can you change your destiny’ guessing game....

1.13 Diamonds Are Forever It seems somewhat incredible that it has taken thirteen episodes to actually get a Jo-centric story, which is what Diamonds Are Forever sets out to provide. I’d be misleading you to say that I wasn’t disappointed about what it contained, which really didn’t do what one might reasonably expect. Given that Jo Martinez is the episode’s focus, do we know anything more about her at the end than we did at the start?...

1.20 Best Foot Forward That disappointed me somewhat, as did the fact that, after the surgically removed foot is found before the ballet’s third act, Henry never says ‘the game’s afoot’ in true Sherlockian style. But you can’t have everything, can you? There was one part of this whole mystery that was worth watching it for, and that was where Henry revealed to Eva that he’d worked out what really happened to her, and then she went to take the adoration of the crowd....

Detective Chief Inspector Eugene Morton is clearly an investigator of long experience. He is clearly a man who is not easily dissuaded from pursuing his goals. He is clearly the most competent, calm and capable individual currently dwelling in the town of Fortitude. He is clearly a police officer who gets results. We’ll start at the end and work backwards this week. The most comforting thing about Shirley Allerdyce’s brutal assault on her hapless mother was simultaneously the most threatening, namely that it was pretty obviously not her doing the unpleasant deed....

Rewind three days earlier and the crew are heading down to JP’s palatial residence for a weekend of unbridled hedonism. All except Howard who is locked in a battle of wills with BT technical support, and Heathsley. The hybrid creature formerly known as Heather and Kingsley. But by some quirk of fate they separate and Kingsley goes off to join the gang and more importantly Josie. Speaking of the pussyman, Kingsley seems to have reverted back to his straight man role which is uncomfortably similar to The Inbetweeners’ Simon....

This week’s episode of From Dusk Till Dawn focuses on the beginnings, the lore for these snake vampires that we’d been able to assume and guess at and gave some details as to how and why it all started. Also, for those who don’t know spanish, La Conquista means “The Conquest.” Finding out that Carlos was a Conquistador was interesting, and I found it funny that Carlos Felipe was both rewarded by his captain as a “most loyal soldier” and shown as nothing but a greedy lout in the same episode....

The elevated yet crude humor mostly comes from Tiger and Wolf (Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson), travelers from an apocalyptic future who seek out their so-called Savior by sending a supposedly unwinnable video game back in time to find the one warrior who can beat it. That victor turns out to be Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson), a janitor whose video game skills don’t translate into real life the way the future soldiers had hoped....

A beat-em-up on motorbikes is a simple but effective concept – so effective, in fact, that it’s a mystery why EA aren’t on their fiftieth sequel already. Strangely, Road Rash hasn’t seen the light of day in nearly a decade – the series concluded with the dismal RR: Jailbreak for the Playstation and Gameboy back in 1999 and hasn’t been allowed out of the garage since. All Road Rash needs is a lick of 21st century hi-def paint and it’ll be as good as new; with the right developer’s touch, the high-speed fist fights, blunt instruments and dangerous roadside furniture will all seem as fresh as they did in the nineties....

In some curious and forgettable circumstances I found myself reading Gangsta Granny to one of my younger relatives a couple of years ago. Hailing from the David Walliams stable it was expected to be ripe with gags and puns about the modern world but behind the humour there was a moral tale about people’s neglect of the elderly. At Christmas time it seems ideal fare for families grazing round the TV for feel-good laughs and a life lesson, so unsurprisingly the BBC nabbed the rights and set about adapting it....

Starting Monday 6 July at 9:00pm on BBC 1 Torchwood: Children Of Earth begins its 5-in-a-row run, lead by Captain Jack, in an experimental week of the third season sci-fi series. Pre-show press promises a dark and chilling tale told nightly through Friday. Each episode also airs later on BBC 3 (11:45pm first night), but we plan to catch the earliest action possible. Whether this one-week wrap-up proves to be wise or weak, time and telly will tell....

We begin the final season of Girls by learning that Hannah has been printed in a major publication. This is presented through a montage of her friends and family reading and reacting to her story, followed by a shot of Hannah hugging her work to her chest and smiling like a goofball. It’s all very upbeat, and I suppose it should be, as Hannah’s realising her dreams and all that....

After the power of Madonna hit the hallways of McKinley High, this week’s episode of Glee is less focused on the fun side of the show and more on the emotional. When Splits magazine names Sue the best cheerleading coach of the past 2,000 years she throws a huge wobbly to make everything perfect, taking over the auditorium (thus leaving the Glee club with nowhere to rehearse) and demands that newest Cheerio Mercedes lose ten pounds....

There’s good and bad throughout this week’s Gotham, which finally gets us a little time with Selina Kyle. Street kids are being abducted, so Detectives Gordon and Bullock are on the case. Of course, nothing is ever simple in Gotham City… Lili Taylor (I miss her on Almost Human) deserves better than the “straight-laced as a cartoon librarian but actually kills people” villain trope she’s saddled with. Frank Whaley is here, as well, but doesn’t get much to do....

Gotham Season 4 Episode 4 “The Demon’s Head” is an example of what Gotham is capable of when it’s firing on all cylinders. Tonight’s episode, written by series star Ben McKenzie, has a tightness often missing from Gotham and from network TV in general. Paired with the kind of impeccable production values we’ve come to expect from this show and a killer performance from Alexander Siddig as R’as al Ghul, and you easily have the best episode of the season and one of the best episodes of Gotham ever, full stop....
