Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 11 Review Here I Go Again

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 11 I spent a lot more time complaining last week than was warranted. Despite the episode highlighting a weakness, it was still fun to watch and great to have back. There’s no such problem this week. “Here I Go Again,” Tala Ashe’s Groundhog Day–but-for-Zari feature, was a delight at every second. The entire episode hinged on Tala Ashe’s performance, and she nailed it. We talked to Ashe last week, and it sounded from the interiew like she was relishing the chance to jump in the spotlight....

Legion Season 2 Episode 5 Review Chapter 13

Legion Season 2 Episode 5 It’s not inconceivable that Lenny Busker would have been a one-and-done character if it weren’t for the outstanding work of Aubrey Plaza. There’s really no established reason as to why the character’s spirit would exist inside of the Shadow King alongside Oliver, who is actively possessed, but lots of things are puzzling on Legion, so I shouldn’t think about it too hard. Still if I had to put my money on it, I’d bet Lenny’s inclusion in Season 2 is a direct response to the audience’s reaction....

Lesbian Vampire Killers Review

The opening scene of the celluloid girl-on-girl bloodsucking was reminiscent of Carry On Screaming. And the rest of the film carried on in a similar vein with cheesy lines, titles and characters. Not really a match made in heaven. A bit predictable too. From the first few minutes the audience can tell how this is going to end: Jimmy bears an uncanny resemblance to one of his ancestors (who was responsible for slaying Carmilla, Queen of the lesbian vampires played by Silvia Colloca – eons ago), he’ll get in trouble and the chubby one who up until now has been a bit shit will save the day....

Logan Review

But not here. In Logan, the fence does its job. The car is stopped, and stopped suddenly. Our hero – appreciating the film frequently questions if he’s a hero at all – needs a plan B. It’s a small detail, a little subversion of a cinema cliché. Yet it’s indicative of what director James Mangold has tried to do with his follow-on from The Wolverine. Thus, what we get here is a comic book movie that eschews being superhero-y....

Looking Forward To Childrens Hospital Season 6

“Yeah, we’re in Brazil.” It’s kind of hard to believe that Childrens Hosptial started as a web series on TheWB.com. It was filler content that was given the lowest of expectations and yet somehow the show, now in its sixth season, has not only become Adult Swim’s flagship (Emmy winning) show, but it has also spawned two spin-offs and contains one of the most impressive ensembles on a cable program....

Lost Speculation Who Will Live And Die

Before we begin, one note: we’ve not seen any more episodes than you of Lost, assuming you’re up to date with the series. Thus, no spoilers, just speculation! With no new episode of Lost to watch this week, I decided to indulge in a little speculation to try and figure out which of the series regulars will end up eating soil before the story is over. There are 15 ‘regular’ cast members in season 6, so excluding Ilana (the only series regular who has bitten the dust thus far) that makes for 14 possible deaths....

Love And Peace Review

First: the plot. Thirty-something Ryo (Hiroki Hasegawa) is a human doormat. A shy clerk mercilessly ridiculed by his co-workers and even complete strangers on the train, Ryo secretly harbours dreams of becoming a rock star. While an equally quiet work colleague, Yuko (Kumiko Aso) appears to be the only person in the world who actually likes Ryo, his only true confidant is Pikadon, a tiny terrapin he alternately keeps in his pocket or plays board games with in his tiny flat....

Lucifer Season 3 Episode 6 Review Vegas With Some Radish

Lucifer Season 3 Episode 6 “There’s no reason we can’t look fabulous and catch a homicidal redhead.” Tonight’s episode features a return of Lucifer’s ex-wife, Candy Morningstar (Lindsey Gort), whose disappearance and possible murder in Vegas moves him to drop everything, including Chloe’s birthday party, and take Ella and the Corvette to investigate. While the murder-of-the-week often lingers in the background providing a means for the characters to work out some deeper issues, tonight’s lighthearted tale follows the exploits of Linda and Chloe as they get drunk and party in Lucifer’s penthouse....

Mad Men Season 5 Episode 5 Review Signal 30

This review contains spoilers. 5.5 Signal 30 If you hadn’t met Pete Campbell prior to Signal 30, the episode would still be as full and revealing a character portrait as you could wish for. That Mad Men manages to produce stand-alone, rounded instalments without missing a beat of the continuing drama is one of the reasons its kernel of devotees (they may not be many, as evidenced by this season’s less-than sensational ratings, but they’re certainly vocal) are capable of such giddiness about the show....

Mad Men Season 5 Episode 7 Review At The Codfish Ball

This review contains spoilers. Bracketed by illicit phone calls from Sally to creepy Glen (do you think showrunner Matthew Weiner knew such an unflattering epithet would be coined for his son’s character?), At the Codfish Ball introduced us to the French-Canadian loins whence Megan sprang: M. et Mme Calvet, played to Gallic perfection by Ronald Guttman and Julia Ormond. Since that eventful weekend at Disneyland, there’s been a question mark hovering over where Megan came from, and now arrives our answer....

Mad Men Season 7 Episode 11 Review Time Life

7.11 Time & Life There was an inescapable sense of the endtimes to Time & Life—a suitably momentous title for an episode that blasted Mad Men’s central premise to pieces. Without SCP, this workplace drama no longer has a workplace. Don’s not the only one being dismantled in time for the ultimate episode, “everything must go”, as Roger drily observed. Having the countdown in our minds (is it really three more episodes?...

Manhattan You Always Hurt The One You Love Review

While at first glance, Manhattan is a straightforward 1940s throwback bedecked with Studebakers and wide-brimmed fedoras, its relevance to urgent 21st-century dilemmas simmers just below the surface. Following a team of scientists scrambling to finalize the design for an atomic bomb on a secretive military outpost in the New Mexican desert, Manhattan, it seems, is a series about heady ethical questions. This is wartime, and the personal freedom of the Manhattan Project scientists is secondary to the greater good of their mission....

Marvel S Agents Of S H I E L D Episode 1 Review Pilot

1.1 Pilot It’s certainly not a bad piece of TV – the plot mostly makes sense, the cast is mostly good, and there’s an undeniable thrill in seeing the likes of Coulson and Hill on screen outside the movies. But it’s also not as good as it should have been: it looks a little economical, the pace is meandering, and it doesn’t seem to know what story it’s actually trying to tell....

Mcmafia Episode 1 Review

“God, what does it take to corrupt you?”, a glamorous nightclub goer in Israel asks Alex Godman (James Norton). He’s a strait-laced, self-made investment banker who has done everything by the book. Aware that his Russian heritage could undermine his business’ reputation, he has made a point of never investing in Russian companies and while his Uncle Boris (David Dencik) is clearly mixed up in the world of drug importation and dangerous kingpins, Alex has been very clear that both business and pleasure will stay above board....

Men Women Children Review

Originally titled Pale Blue Dot, this relationship drama opens with a confounding galactic vista that looks more like something from Interstellar than the film promised by the trailers (and we’ll get to those) as Thompson’s narrator recounts how the Voyager space probe was loaded up with music, pictures and greetings from Earth when it was launched in 1977, and quotes Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot while referring to our planet....

Merlin Series 2 Episode 10 Review

Initially, the idea of this episode could have been great, with the notion of the five kingdoms of Britain congregating on Camelot to form a peace treaty. This seemed quite intriguing as potentially it would have shown us the other king and royal families from around the country, and then delve deeper into the relationship Uther has with them and how the ‘world’ of Merlin outside the confines of Camelot looks....

Merlin Series 3 Episodes 6 7 Review The Changeling And The Castle Of Fyrien

This is an episode full of flatulent gags, bad CGI, an annoyingly idiotic villain called Grunhilda and another rehashed plot, with several scenes which would not be out of place on CBBC. I realise Merlin’s target demographic is young-ish children, but half a dozen times throughout this episode I felt like I was viewing a show aimed at six-year olds! The episode opens with a sleeping baby being possessed by a Sidhe, a mythical, pixie-like creature who plants one of their own inside a child to eventually infiltrate a kingdom....

Mob City Oxpecker Stay Down Review

Primordial fears, everybody’s got them. Some people are afraid of premature burial, some of being stuck in an elevator. Being handcuffed to a cast-iron radiator, that’s mine. I don’t know why. I was never actually handcuffed to one, but it scares me. I wrote a play about it. Three lead actresses quit because it gave them nightmares and it was a comedy and they were the playing the handcuffer not the handcuffee....

Monsters University Review

By focusing on Mike Wasowski’s quest to cast himself against type as a Scarer, Monsters University defines a clear emotional through-line that leads to an unexpected message. When you wish upon a star, do your dreams come true? Not in this picture. Sometimes, wishing and hard work just isn’t enough. Sometimes, you have to fail and adapt. The first of those is an Elementary School trip to the Monsters Inc....

Nikita Episode 4 Review Rough Trade

We all have the odd pesky skeleton in the closet, some never quite forgotten past indiscretion that we would jump at the chance to retrospectively atone for. Guilt eats away at us from the inside over time, but then, we all have our crosses to bear. The theme of confronting one’s past runs through our main character’s arcs in this week’s Nikita, and in doing so provides, once again, the best episode so far....
