“Angel Boy” is a perfectly passable installment of Bedtime Stories, offering up a simple, weird, off putting at times story that does everything that it needs to do. This is all strengthened by the stylistic touches and technical aspects that hold the episode together, which I actually think are the most interesting thing going on here. This entry has Eric as Dan Dimler encounter the very peculiar Scotty Andrews (Tim) and his DVDs of him singing....

2.3 Surrogate Episode three opens with a monologue from Tony, who confesses to the accidental mid-sex murder by strangulation of a woman he’s picked up from a brothel. It’s fictitious, probably. Or if it isn’t, the story he tells isn’t about our China Girl. Then there are the sex noises Robin hears from Miranda’s apartment, at first indistinguishable from shrieks of pain. Even Miranda’s romantic hailstone story took place on the journey home from a seminar on domestic violence....

Actually, this week’s quality rating was started before the credits even rolled, with the suspicious listings circulating for the programme: “Time zones are colliding”. Are they really, television? Is Pacific Mid-West head-on with Greenwich Mean Time? Or do you mean something else? But I judged far too soon. ‘To the Last Man’ focused on Two-Button Tosh, who was banned from using her technological whiz-bang knowledge in order to devote herself to a soldier cryogenically frozen by Torchwoodin World War One....

Turn Season 3 Episode 3 The action on Turn: Washington’s Spies heated up this week as several characters set out to spring murderous traps on others. Needless to say, none of those traps worked out entirely as planned. A few scenes later, we see Maj. Ben Tallmadge (Seth Numrich) stalking a traitorous Continental chaplain named Worthington as he ominously recites from Psalm 23 (the “valley of the shadow of death” one)....

With Sophie Okonedo in Undercover, the BBC seems to have pulled off the same trick in a single episode. Undercover gives you two quality dramas for the price of one. The first is set in the wide, deserted landscapes of the American south and stars Okonedo as a compassionate lawyer burning with the injustice of her client’s imminent execution. It’s all stifling heat, prison gate vigils, callous southern Baptist radio hosts cheering on state murder like a fan at a football game, and acting so powerful it punches through your chest to squeeze the air from your lungs....

Even if the facts do point towards its carbon footprint-reducing efficacy, few TV shows would be prepared to advertise the eco-friendly benefits of cutting a toddler’s throat. But then few TV shows share Utopia’s delight in saying the unsayable, and fewer than that boast its brutal clarity about what a fucking mess we’re all in. That honour goes to the self-mutilation of Wilson Wilson, who responded to being repeatedly told this week what was and wasn’t ‘him’ by becoming someone else – specifically, Mr Rabbit....

Van Helsing Season 1 Episode 2 Executive producer and writer Simon Barry makes a critical, but nonetheless vital decision to rewind the narrative before sending Vanessa out among the Feeders who now control the streets of Seattle. Though viewers glean significant plot details from the pilot, the second episode of Van Helsing, “Seen You,” manages to fill in just enough gaps and pose just enough questions while all hell breaks loose during the early days of the vampire/zombie apocalypse....

Van Helsing Episode 7 Before we go any further, let me just say that tonight’s episode of Van Helsing represents everything an apocalyptic drama should be. Featuring an uncompromising leader who not only stands up to his own people and then rallies them to fight off the invaders, “For Me,” the series’ seventh episode, articulates the incessant struggle individuals face, culminating in the long anticipated flight from the hospital. Barry and director Amanda Tapping’s (“Nothing Matters”) portrayal of Mohamad shines as he navigates his way alone through the vampire jungle....

Gary (Tony Hale) presents the new vice presidential look to an aghast campaign command center. Selina gets a drastic haircut three days before a televised debate. The who team freaks. This is a disaster. It is assured. The brilliance of the Veep writing team is that every set up gets the statistically least probably pay off. Every promise will be broken. Every good hope that the characters expect is not only dashed, but crushed in a way that is most devastatingly humiliating....

As the opening titles of Watchmen kick in, an elegiac, graceful montage of photographs passes by, narrating and illustrating its slightly altered, kinky universe – Nixon re-elected for a third term, masked heroes forming a team called the Minutemen, before disbanding – backed by the downbeat strums of Dylan telling us ‘The times they are a’changin”. Breath a sigh of relief, as this is the best of all possible worlds....

Ever since Westworld introduced the concept of data-mining this season, we’ve all been anticipating just exactly what (human) shape that could eventually take. If you can record “who a person really is” while inside the confines of the park, why not just replicate them? From the very first episode of the year, the prioritization of intellectual property above all else for the Delos corporation has been insidious. They’d even reserve the right to send in reinforcements until priceless IP inside of Peter Abernathy was recovered....

So when Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Vileneuve met with reporters at San Diego Comic-Con, someone inevitably had to ask which version of Blade Runner is Blade Runner 2049 a sequel to. “The thing is that I was raised with the first one,” Vileneuve said, referring to the original theatrical cut. “There was one Blade Runner at the time. I remember seeing the first movie and falling deeply in love with it....

You’d be forgiven though if you searched around for Voltron fan content and assumed it was all about the romantic relationships between the characters. Much of the content online created by Voltron fans centers around various “ships” of the Voltron main cast and discussion over which characters belong together. Despite this some fans are hoping there will be more romantic content throughout the series. Many point to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, which contained quite a few romantic subplots and were worked on by the lions share of the Voltron crew, as indication romance will find its way into Voltron....

Having the episode take place primarily at the office gave the guys a chance to utilize their full cast, which I think is when Workaholics is at its strongest. Adam, Blake, and Ders are fun to watch while getting weird at home, but it is often way better to watch the guys bounce off of other people. The three guys, while working together and living together, have created their own little world where all of their behavior, like say, stealing all the snacks at their office so they can have a party, is completely rational behavior, and usually the most comedy comes from someone else bursting their bubble....

As it turns out, you can’t kill your problems in a car wreck, even if your problem is a possessed woman. Malcolm moves into his new house and the problems immediately start. There’s a creepy doll, a box that drives Becky insane, a vodka-swilling imaginary friend that teaches Wyatt to curse… you pick the horror movie trope, and it shows up at some point, right down to Malcolm’s obsession with cameras and home security....

Harold (John Cho) has settled into a happy life. He’s married to a beautiful woman whose father-in-law (Danny Trejo in a great role) hates him, he’s got a great job on Wall Street, and he’s well on his way to becoming one of the one per cent richest people the 99 per cent are protesting against as we speak. Kumar (Kal Penn) has also settled into a nice routine. His girlfriend has left him, so he lives in a filthy apartment and spends his entire day, night, and life getting high, or as he puts it “not low....

Tom comes from an alternate utopian timeline where retrofuturist ideas like flying cars actually came to be. It is only through his own irresponsible time travel machinations that our present was formed. I’ll leave you, dear reader, to decide if it is The Darkest Timeline or not. A self-aware “memoir,” All Our Wrong Todays has an unusual structure for a time travel novel. It has the tenor of an oral story, but the ambitious plot and worldbuilding of a much more traditional science fiction tome....

2.13 Madness Ends One of the weirdest things about this season of AHS is that while the plots were more outrageous than the first season (aliens and Nazis are hard to top with simple killing and ghosts), the emotional stakes also seem a whole lot higher. When you’re not distracted by mutants or horrifying humping, there was something at the centre of the program that appealed to viewers on an emotional level....

What you probably haven’t done since the early nineties is look it up in the Yellow Pages. First you have to take off the cellophane wrapping that it thudded through your door in nine months ago. Then you have to work through the mind-numbing logic that pieced together the section titles of Stoves and Fascias & Soffits, but forgot to create sections for Vermin Control or Photocopying. Still, Yellow Pages used to be grand at doing adverts....
