Mr Peabody Sherman Review

But before then there’s Mr Peabody & Sherman, a decade-long labour of love from The Lion King‘s co-director, Rob Minkoff. Based on the Peabody‘s Improbable History moments that were broadcast as part of The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show, the key idea is that Mr Peabody is a genius dog, who adopts a boy by the name of Sherman. After all, argues the film, if a boy can adopt a dog, why can’t a dog adopt a boy?...

Mr Robot Episode 6 Review Eps1 5 Br4Ve Trave1Er Asf

1.6 eps1.5_br4ve-trave1er.asf You have to hand it to Mr Robot; it understands the deal with stakes. Like a parent who knows they have to follow through with a punishment or any future threats become meaningless, the show couldn’t let Elliot keep winning impossible games. At some point, he had to lose. But did he have to lose through Shayla? It’s 2015. The disappointingly hack trick of slaughtering the lead’s girl to motivate/punish him is so widely critiqued there are entire sites devoted to it....

Music In Film Indiana Jones And The Perfect Fifth

Of course, everyone knows Indiana Jones. They could sing his signature theme off by heart in the shower any day, along with most of John Williams’ other scores. And there are a lot to choose from; Williams is one of the most prolific (and greatest) composers ever to grace a cinema’s speakers, never more so than when working with Steven Spielberg. But among the umpteen Williams-Spielberg scores, Indiana Jones stands out....

Nikita Episode 10 Review Dark Matter

Dark Matter With the Wikileaks scandal spread like an embarrassing rash across the single-numbered pages of the world’s papers over the past few weeks, it seems oddly apposite for this week’s Nikita to focus on an unfortunate intelligence leak, and the frantic scramble to plug the holes, repair the damage done and to find someone to incriminate quickly, just to take everyone’s mind off the whole sorry affair. Not that Nikita would trouble itself with snoresome tittle-tattle about members of our royal family being (gasp!...

Once Upon A Time Season 3 Finale Review Snow Drifts There S No Place Like Home

3.21 Snow Drifts & 3.22 There’s No Place Like Home Still, given its position at the conclusion of the season, the episode could have stood to be shorter. An hour and a half tops, though if they’d squeezed it into an hour they would have had to really trim the fat and would have gotten a nice, tight story. As it is, the episode had its boring moments: a few unnecessary heart-to-hearts, a slightly overlong series of misadventures....

Outcast I Remember When She Loved Me Review

Outcast Season 1 Episode 2 The emotional journey of tortured soul Kyle Barnes continues in the second episode of Outcast as he takes a bold step towards cleansing his soul by attempting to rescue that of his mother. Centered around the events of his childhood and his present desire to gain some sort of redemption for a perceived sin against his mother, the plot of “(I Remember) When She Loved Me” follows Kyle as he sets out to recreate the past hoping to cast out remnants of the demon he believes still resides inside his mother Sarah....

Outlander Vengeance Is Mine Review

Outlander Season 2 Episode 11 As epic as last week’s Battle of Prestonpans was, I will always prefer these more intimate episodes of Outlander. And, by intimate, I mean the episodes that end with a found family killing a team of rapists together. Because, as we all know, the family that slays rapists together, stays together. This isn’t the only problem Team Fraser has. Wary of Jamie’s considerable influence over Prince Charles, the Jacobite commanders craft a plan to get Jamie and his men out of camp before he gives another “You have my sword!...

Peep Show Series 7 Episode 1 Review

Picking up directly where the last series finished, the episode began in a labour ward where Sophie was giving birth to what has been firmly established as Mark’s baby. It would end with the little fella being born and cradled by Mark, accompanied by the finest line of the entire episode: “My son. Minimal water damage.” Asking Sophie for her opinion on the matter brought one of many chuckles from me, as this was a perfect indication that Mr Corrigan hadn’t changed a bean since we last saw him....

Penny Dreadful Seance Review

The parlor tricks are half the fun in Penny Dreadful. I’m not saying you should try these at home, but séances, done correctly, can entertain the kiddies for hours. For adults, it was all too often fakery. I am almost sure Madame Kali (Helen McCrory) was going to turn out to be a fake, all that hand-holding, stiff-shoulders and serious looks, and that’s before she turns into Maria Ouspenskaya. A bit over the top, most partygoers would say....

Philip K Dick S Electric Dreams Episode 3 Review The Commuter

At the centre of The Commuter is one of those truths that, like the inevitability of death, or how much salt they put in Kellogg’s Corn flakes, most of us prefer not to acknowledge. In a different life without our kids, we might be happier. We’d have fewer wrinkles, a tidier house and a better sex-life. The people we love aren’t always good for us. That’s the conclusion reached by Ed Jacobson (Timothy Spall) in The Commuter, the third and so far the strongest story in Channel 4’s Electric Dreams anthology....

Power Rangers Super Megaforce Spirit Of The Tiger Review

Who happens to be working as a pooper-scooper at the local zoo, which for some reason Emma finds super attractive? Different strokes for different folks I guess. Meanwhile, Jake is still trying to get in Gia’s pants but this week he tries a different tactic. He actually asks Emma if Gia likes him or not! What a concept! It’s the least creepy thing Jake has done since the show first hinted at his attraction....

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Episode 6 Review Attack Of The Galactic Ninjas

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Episode 6 Let’s talk about Hayley and Calvin’s relationship. It doesn’t work. These two should not be together. Just look at this episode. While all the blame is laid on Calvin for jumping to conclusions you have to stop and wonder why he made those conclusions in the first place. If this episode had made it clear they were both in the wrong I could have worked with that but Hayley comes off blame free....

Preacher Episode 2 Review See

1.2 See Following in the footsteps of the pilot episode, this week’s episode opens up not with Jesse and Cassidy, but with another cold opening: 1881, outside of the town of Ratwater. As a fan of the comic books, I know just who they’re introducing from the very moment the man’s face appears in the doorway, but while we don’t get a good shot of The Cowboy (Graham McTavish), it’s pretty clear that he’s a rough customer....

Prisoners Review

Prisoners is the story of two families, the Dovers (Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello) and the Birches (Terrence Howard and Viola Davis) who find their six-year-old daughters missing on Thanksgiving Day. Detective Loki, played with an easygoing authority by Jake Gyllenhall, is the man assigned to their case. The search quickly leads to Alex Jones (Paul Dano, in an appropriately creepy performance), a disturbed young man with an unsettling demeanor....

Reconsidering King Kong 1976

Unfortunately, Rambaldi’s giant robot didn’t work very well. For close ups in which Kong had to pick up Jessica Lange, a separate enormous hydraulic arm was used, and for the rest of the film, the giant ape was portrayed by makeup artist Rick Baker in a gorilla suit (albeit a really good one) crunching through miniature sets and projected on a green screen. In the end the overhyped, and almost completely immobile, robot only appeared onscreen for a few seconds during the Shea Stadium sequence in which Kong escapes....

Red Dwarf X Trojan Review

10.1 Trojan Trojan is the first episode of the first full new series of Red Dwarf since Red Dwarf VIII ended in April 1999. As such, it arguably has a bigger job to do than any episode since the sitcom’s conception; not only does it have to establish the status quo for the middle-aged boys from the Dwarf, but all eyes are also going to be on this one for signs that Red Dwarf X can stand up there with its lesser-numbered brothers, and that bringing it back was the right thing to do....

Red Lights Review

Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy play Margaret Matheson and Tom Buckley, a pair of psychologists who specialise in debunking the paranormal. When they’re not teaching their university students about the con tricks of bogus spiritualists, they’re investigating real-world cases of the supernatural with a distinctly cynical eye; both Margaret, the older, bossy one, and Tom, her younger assistant, have their own peculiar reasons for resenting and distrusting anyone who claims to be able to contact the spirit world....

Reggie Perrin Episode 1 Review

In the history of light entertainment there doesn’t seem to have been a show more maligned before an episode even managed to make it to the screen than this one. Now I would be the first to say the original is a classic, rising far above most sitcoms dating from the 70s, before then or after. Rossiter was perfect for the role of a middle-class sales executive slowly unravelling before the eyes of colleagues, friends and family....

Resurrection Home Review

At a church service, Pastor Tom decides to open the floor to an open forum where they can discuss whatever fears they have on their mind. At first things stay cordial, but then Gary, the cousin of Gale, who was killed by Caleb Richards, starts riling people up. The scene shows just how messy things can get when more and more people start discovering these mysterious circumstances. Tensions rise until the pesky woman from the congregation reveals to everyone that Rachel is carrying Tom’s child....
