Review Doctor Who S3 6

Yes, Gatiss is Lazarus, a scientist who has discovered how to reverse the ageing process by enlarging your DNA, or something similar that said ‘DNA’ a lot. Having made himself young and despatching of his partner – the second Dinnerlady this series, and counting – he proceeded to munch his way through one other party attendee before galloping after the Doctor, failing to notice there’s less meat on the fellow than in the average school burger....

Revisiting Buffy Season 7 Episode 6

Let me preface everything else I’m going to say in this review by saying this: I really, really, really, really hated this episode the first time round. If I’d realised I had to watch this one next, I would have been less eager to get my arse back on the sofa for another episode. I’d probably have tuned into E4 and watched a few more of their endless reruns of Scrubs or Friends, instead....

Revisiting Kingdom Hospital Episode 2

The man who knocked down Peter Rickman in episode one falls from the roof of his house and is taken to Kingdom Hospital, in the same room as his victim. In the same dream world that Rickman experienced, the man has nightmarish visions of his crimes, and the same boy with fanged teeth, this time dressed as an ice cream man. There is some repeated jargon about “The Emperor of Ice Cream” (which King first mentioned in his book Salem’s Lot, although I’m still not sure who or what this is referring to)....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Family

The Enterprise is in drydock (well, space-drydock), getting repairs following the Borg attack, when the crew decides to take some well-earned shore leave. On Earth, Picard has arrived in France, or as it is known in the future, RoboFrance 29. As he walks up to the Picard residence, Picard bumps into his nephew, Rene, and then his sister-in-law Marie. It appears that Picard grew up in some kind of vineyard in the 19th Century, because they don’t even seem to have a TV, but everyone seems relatively well-adjusted despite the fact that they’re apparently the Star Trek version of the Amish people....

Rock And Chips The Frog And The Pussycat Review

The third episode of this Only Fools And Horses prequel begins to the upbeat strains of Twisting The Night Away. It’s February 1962, and Joan Trotter (Kellie Bright) is watching astronaut John Glenn’s rocket being launched. She and young Rodney are looking at a Bournemouth holiday brochure, a holiday she should have taken if her plans hadn’t been thwarted by Del Boy… Meanwhile, Freddie “the Frog” Robdal (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is being investigated by the police for a robbery on a jewellers in Margate....

Silver Linings Playbook Review

The Fighter not only gave the writer-director his biggest box office success to date (edging out his previous biggest hit, Three Kings, in gross, and eclipsing it in profits), but it gave him his first bona fide awards contender, netting two Academy Awards for acting and across-the-board nominations from gong-givers on both sides of the Atlantic. This is the story of Pat (Bradley Cooper), who is released from a mental hospital eight months after finding his wife with another man....

South Park Series 1 Episode 1 Review

South Park has been running for twelve years now, and while it enjoys a dedicated fan base and cult status, there’re still a lot of people out there who don’t really rate it, regarding it as little more than toilet humour, or an exercise in bad taste. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are shrewd, politically and socially aware individuals wearing American jock/ nerd clothing. A casual viewer of their show would see nothing but fart jokes, but for those paying attention, South Park is a master class in social satire, lampooning an ever-expanding range of topics with flair and great wit....

Star Trek Discovery Is All About The Fight For The Federation S Soul

During the Star Trek: Discovery panel at NYCC, executive producer Akiva Goldsman addressed the criticism that Discovery was too dark to be a true Star Trek head on. In other words: Discovery is the fight for Federation’s soul, and for the soul of Star Trek itself. Everything You Need to Know About Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 In Discovery, this debate is being played out at the character level. Lorca is a representation of the military-minded Starfleet officer, a man who calls war “his craft” and whose crew understands that he sees them merely as resources, rather than people....

Star Wars The Clone Wars The Disappeared Part 1 Review

Director Steward Lee and writer Jonathan Rinzler, long-time Star Wars nonfiction guru and author of the popular The Star Wars comic series, certainly haven’t put together a bad story – there’s a large variety of humor here, with something for everybody to laugh at: Jar Jar’s slapstick, an awkward and absurd romance, and Mace Windu’s calm acceptance of it all. The Indiana Jones feel in this arc is intentional, as seen in the StarWars....

Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 2 Episode 7 Review

Nearing the end of the Geonosis saga with the droid factory destroyed and the planet annexed, you would think that would be the end of the siege on the bug-filled planet and the Jedi could move on to the next campaign. This, fortunately, is not the case as, in this penultimate episode we have another cracking action-packed 20 minutes that’s a bit of homage to numerous dark, shadowy corridor horror movies, and is a chance for Jedi Luminara to shine....

Stargate Universe Season 2 Episode 4 Review Pathogen

Episode 3 left us with Col Telford abandoned by Dr Rush, who has more control over Destiny than anyone else knows. Although by now, more people than just Col Young have started to notice that Rush has been running off at odd times and keeping himself to himself. Both Dr Park and Adam Brody remark on how weird he has been acting recently, and how tired they are with it....

Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 9 Review Sadie Killer

Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 9 Maybe this batch of episodes isn’t about running away from your problems. Maybe it’s just the way different people deal with them. Dewey attempted to sweep them under the rug. Lapis ran away. Steven was impatient and tried to solve them too quickly. Peridot internalized them. She just believes her life will be nothing special. That she can’t have fun. That Lars was the only bright thing in her day-to-day life, which says a lot since Lars was usually pretty awful to her....

Strange Brigade A Co Op Shooter Homage To 1930S Adventure Serials

I had the opportunity to take an early, extended look at the game with Rebellion’s head of creative, Tim Jones, and another member of the media. The session wasn’t the full four-player experience, but I came away knowing one thing for certain: When it was time for the demo to stop, I was ready for more monster-mowing. Before properly tackling the game with my trusty teammates, I was thrust into a single-player campaign mission called “Harbin’s Dig Site” to get a feel for the controls and fall into the flow of gameplay....

Suburbicon Review

Shortly after the young African American family move in next door, the Lodge family experience a traumatic home invasion. Two unknown white men tie the family to chairs and Gardner (Matt Damon), his wife Rose (Julianne Moore), their son Nicky (Noah Jupe) and Rose’s twin sister Margaret (also played by Julianne Moore for added eerie impact) are all administered a dose of chloroform. When they finally regain consciousness, they are faced with a whole new reality....

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 9 Review Supergirl Lives

Supergirl Season 2, Episode 9 Supergirlwent full-on space epic this week (right after I wrote a feature highlighting its non-genre elements, too — thanks, Supergirl), proving the narrative limits of this universe stretch well beyond Earth. How did Supergirldo it? By grounding its escapade on Slaver’s Moon in ongoing storylines: Kara’s mission to figure out what kind of reporter she wants to be, Mon-El’s quest to discover where he fits on Earth and in Kara’s life, Winn’s growing pains as an in-the-field agent, and Alex’s anxiety over being happy....

Supernatural Will We See Sister Jo Again

After a few years away from acting, Ackles found a great character to sink her teeth into with angel-turned-faith healer Sister Jo. “Sister Jo is a very strong, very opinionated business woman,” Danneel Ackles explained. “She uses her faith healing powers as her business. Lucifer comes to her because he’s attracted to this powerful healing that she does and she makes a deal. The deal is on her terms, which I love about this character....

Supernatural Season 6 Episode 9 Review Clap Your Hands If You Believe

6.9 Clap Your Hands If You Believe The first thing to mention about this episode, then, is the opening credits. It is an absolutely great homage to The X Files, one that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to many a geek’s face. Very well done to all involved. Obviously, this isn’t the most serious of episodes of the show, though, and quite welcome it is to. It’s nice to take a break from the intensity that has built this season and, with the added bonus of The X Files influence, this is a very fun episode that just stays the right side of comic relief....

Taboo Episode 3 Review

A tea trading monopoly? That’s what all this trouble is over? James Delaney has been fighting assassins, getting stabbed in the gut and making enemies in Regency society’s upper ranks all because he wants to open the UK’s first branch of Whittard. Well, at least we know. Aside from riling up everyone he crosses paths with, Delaney’s motivations have been tricky to discern until now. Realising that he’s essentially a Dragon’s Den contestant trying to play the Americans off the British for the biggest investment in his China-based start-up makes him a more accessible lead....

Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2 Episode 22 Review

What a mind scrabble! If you’ve not seen it, then please do not read this now, watch the show! It’s bloody brilliant. Right, forget almost all of that, because in the 43 minutes that Born To Run takes almost all of that and anything else you concluded about this show gets entirely turns on its head. The story starts normally enough, with Sarah in jail while John and Cameron debate the next course of action....

The 100 Season 5 Interview With Lola Flanery

Raised by Clarke following Praimfaya, Madi is very much the surrogate spawn of Wanheda. When Clarke is captured by the Eligius prisoners in “Sleeping Giants,” Madi wastes no time going about rescuing her—first, attempting to lead her pursuers into a trap, and then recruiting Bellamy for help. Her character is perhaps the best post-time jump addition to this show, and it will be interesting to see how she grows and affects the other character dynamics as Season 5 progresses....
