Doctor Who The Time Of Angels Spoiler Free Review

Furthermore, not only is Steven Moffat bringing back the angels here, he’s also reuniting the Doctor with River Song for the first time since series four’s Forest Of The Dead. And it’s River who Moffat is concentrating on for the first significant chunk of the episode. When we first begin The Time Of Angels, River and the Doctor are 12,000 years apart, although by the time the opening credits roll – and courtesy of some again slightly underwhelming effects work (contrasting with some excellent production design later in the episode) – the two are united....

Does Bad Science Ruin Science Fiction

A familiar face on the US chat show circuit, Tyson is the director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium, a research associate of the American Museum of Natural History, and currently the presenter of Fox’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, a sequel to Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan’s seminal 1980 PBS series, Cosmos: A Personal Journey. He’s also appeared as himself in episodes of Stargate Atlantis and The Big Bang Theory (in which he was berated by Jim Parsons’ character for his role in 2006’s demotion of Pluto from planet status)....

Dvd Dungeon The Post Guttenberg Police Academy Films

The first four films (let’s call them the Guttenberg era) were by no means cinematic masterpieces but at least there were a few laughs to be had along the way and Steve Guttenberg was largely responsible for that. Sure he didn’t have the out and out jokes that Michael Winslow, David Graf and George Gaynes had, but his charm and on-screen charisma lent those early films a personality that people could connect with....

Dynasty Episode 1 Review Pilot

Dynasty Episode 1 There seem to be two questions associated with Dynasty: The first is why? And the other is how does it compare to the original series? We’ll get to why in a minute, because it deserves a better answer than, “because they’ve already rebooted everything else.” The soap-y drama is definitely still intact, although the hair and wardrobe has had a serious update. Think more crop tops and cut outs than shoulder pads and big hair....

Dynasty Episode 10 Review A Well Dressed Tarantula

Dynasty: Episode 10 I was prepared to pan this episode for relying (once again) on everyone keeping secrets for no good reason. The “I can’t tell you” game is tedious as a viewer, and it has come up with Cristal for practically every episode. Luckily, this was so much better than that. It was smart to show us what Steven was really up to early on – make the audience feel like we’ve met our twist quota for the night....

Dynasty Episode 11 Review I Answer To No Man

Dynasty: Episode 11 This episode was all about sisters: what makes one, how far will you go for one, and when the rubber meets the road, can you ever really lose one? Fallon should name her memoir Gold Plated Bitch after a line from her kidnappers. Subtitle: They might have stolen my hair but they can never steal my hustle. Still, Dynasty does best when Fallon and Cristal take the occasional bitchy swipes at each other, while still grudgingly respecting one another and having each other’s backs....

Early Man Review

Early Man, then, is the hugely enjoyable new film from the sure-to-be-knighted, multi-Oscar winning director Nick Park, who in turn has invented his first collection of totally brand new characters since 2000’s Chicken Run. He’s settled for his story on a bunch of generally lump-headed caveman and women, all with geographic roots in the UK, who live in a valley that’s overshadowed by the apparently progressive Bronze Age City next door....

Early Reviews For Terminator Salvation

Variety reports: The Hollywood reporter has a few gripes: Although director McG manages to keep the machinery humming 18 years after James Cameron’s “Judgment Day” and its liquid metal raised the F/X stakes considerably, anchoring it in any sort of satisfying dramatic context is another story… Terminator: Salvation is a competent, summer action movie that, much like all good reboots, pleases the fan base while attracting a wider audience. It does not exactly innovate the Terminator name beyond what is already accomplished as it relies on series old themes and not exactly helped by the dearth of character development for most of the characters, some odd exposition work, lack of cohesive editing, and odd ending sequence, but it does bring up some interesting ideas about where the series could go....

Edinburgh Film Festival Away We Go Mesrine Last Heroes Of The Peninsula Reviews

Away We Go A change of pace for filmmaker Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road), the opening night film tells the story of Verona (Maya Rudolph) and Bert (John Krasinski), a couple expecting a baby who are rocked by the announcement that their prospective parents-in-law are leaving the States. Uncertain where exactly to live, the pair hit the road in search of a new location to raise their child. And that’s it, really....

Edinburgh Film Festival Van Diemen S Land Outrage Humpday Sin Nombre Reviews

Van Diemen’s Land The trailer to Jonathon auf der Heide’s debut is a thing of haunting beauty, ending with a beautifully composed shot of a young man’s face in an extreme close-up. We zoom out and there stands a man, ready to bring an axe to his head… which he does. It’s a brilliant teaser and most likely lead to a sold out screening on Thursday night, but the glacial drama has probably confounded as many people as it impressed – it really wasn’t what I, and a lot of other viewers, expected to see....

Emilia Clarke Is Relieved That Terminator Genisys Flopped

In a lengthy cover story interview with Vanity Fair, Emilia Clarke fielded inevitable questions about the highly-publicized behind-the-scenes tumult of Solo: A Star Wars Story (the director swap, acting coach rumors, etc.). Consequently, there was a natural topical transition to another tumultuous film of Clarke’s in 2015’s Terminator Genisys; a film that ultimately underwhelmed, earning $89.76 million domestic, though boosted by $350.84 million overseas. Indeed, the interview reveals that Clarke was “relieved” by the film’s failure, since it meant she would not have to return for any sequels....

Falling Skies A Thing With Feathers Review

Lexi would have her brother, Ben, believe that the Espheni bring hope by way of the supposedly peaceful solution of genetically altering humans and enslaving them. Does she really believe her argument is persuasive? I’m hoping Ben has successfully planted a seed of doubt in Lexi’s brainwashed mind, but I’m no longer convinced Lexi can be saved. I hope I am proven wrong. Tom’s part of the story was definitely the most compelling....

Fargo The Crocodile S Dilemma Review

They are right about one thing; Joel and Ethan Coen’s original film is a modern classic. The location shots are beautiful, the film has wicked comedic tone, and the performances are incredibly memorable. The tag says the new series is “entrenched” in the same, but that’s only a nice way of saying that it borrows those familiar feelings and charms and uses them to sell yet another American crime, anti-hero centered story....

Final Destination 5 Review Round Up

For Final Destination 5, Steven Quale has been brought in to make his feature debut, and given the reviews that the film is attracting in America, he might just have been an inspired choice. Shockya “The thing has flaws, but it has wholly redeemed the franchise from the travesty that was The Final Destination. The tone doesn’t really match that of the first two films, and somewhat the third, but at this point, the series is better off packing in the humor as we’re just so familiar with the chain of events....

Flcl Alternative Episode 2 Review Grown Up Wannabe

FLCL Alternative: Episode 2 FLCL Progressive opened with a lot of promise, introducing two middle school-aged protagonists, plus a lot of weird and intriguing plot threads, all of which it subsequently failed to develop, instead devolving into a mess of reused tropes from the original series and a retread of Haruko’s storyline. FLCL Alternative’s premiere gave us a slice-of-life story about four high school girls, with a bit of weird Haruko stuff going on in the background....

Forever The Pugilist Break Review

At the heart of Forever’s fifth episode, “The Pugilist Break,” is Henry’s insistence that seeing these mistakes isn’t the worst part about living forever. It’s not being able to change how people act that’s so crushing. I’m on Henry’s side, as it perfectly relates to my feelings about the show as it looks set up the story it wants to tell. The mistakes made in the early going of the season didn’t cut deep enough to bury Forever....

Fortitude Series 1 Finale Review

X marks the spot. Comforting, isn’t it? The idea that following a trail, or a map of dubious provenance, will lead to a nice, neat and easily identifiable spot at which all questions are answered and wonderful treasure is to be found. Just listen to the giddy glee with which Max and Yuri greet their finding of Pettigrew’s spot. A real comfort. This is not the fault of the show’s scientific hocus pocus, which worked in the context of the narrative....

Friend Request Review

There’s still a part of me that can’t watch characters using the internet or smartphones on film without wincing a little. It still feels like a cheat to me when used as a plot device, and requires a lot of screenwriters to either set their stories in the 1970s or 80s (ie pre-technological but not so long ago you need to spend a lot extra on wardrobe) or write in frequent explanations (“I’ll call for help … argh, no signal!...

Fringe Season 3 Episode 3 Review The Plateau

After seeing The Plateau, if the whole of Fringe season 3 is going to follow the same pattern, episodes will be alternating between our world and the parallel one for each story. From There To Here Episode 1 Review

This past month there have been a slew of top-notch dramas. From taut thrillers (ITV’s Prey) to zombie dramas (the BBC’s In The Flesh, though that description is unseemly) to gritty crime sagas (another gem from the same stable as In The Flesh, Happy Valley is buttock-clenchingly tense), the exceptional quality has never wavered so you could say expectations were high for tonight’s new offering, From There To Here. While the always reliable Phillip Glenister is first billed, the story is very much about his family as well as him....
