Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2 Episode 4 Abominations Review

Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 Episode 4 “Abominations” isn’t exactly an earth shattering installment of Legends of Tomorrow. It’s perhaps the first episode of the year that felt like one of the more awkwardly paced installments from season one. But it’s still an example of how the new format, which puts far less weight on the major season long arc (other than, of course, the absence of Rip Hunter) in favor of its mini-movies in different time periods....

Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 3 Review Zari

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 3 Here’s the problem with Legends of Tomorrow: when your premise is this packed with ridiculousness, your margin for error is pretty slim. The show has been incredibly strong for the better part of two seasons, but it’s still fundamentally a show about a group of goofball time travellers played as an action comedy, and that road is full of pitfalls. Time travel is fundamentally terrible....

Lights Out Episode 11 Review Rainmaker

Rainmaker Rainmaker introduced us to yet another new character, Jerry, a former champ who has fallen on hard times. Still in tip-top fighting condition, he sits at a pathetic stand in a tiny market offering photographs and autographs to a largely disinterested audience, in a sad tableau reminiscent of Mickey Rourke’s gym-based fan meets in The Wrestler. Jerry is also clearly ensconced in the latter stages of pugilistic dementia. He repeats himself often, has to write down his plans and commitments on pieces of paper, forgetting them instantly otherwise....

Line Of Duty Series 3 Episode 6 Review

Like many a modern idiot, around my wrist is a special watch that monitors my heart-rate. It syncs with my phone and shows me a graph of what my pulse is doing at any given moment. If I were ever to kill someone, I suspect it could be used to incriminate me. Murder must play havoc on the cardiovascular system. Fifteen minutes before the end of Line Of Duty’s series three finale, you’ll see a significant spike on the graph....

Mad Men Season 5 Episode 1 Review A Little Kiss

This review contains spoilers. The only thing better than a brand new episode of Mad Men? Two brand new episodes of Mad Men. 1966 finds the hemlines running as high as the tensions at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, and the swinging sixties finally starting to swing. Matthew Weiner began the episode with a little misdirection, opening on a new agency and unfamiliar characters. Had the loss of Lucky Strike scattered the SCDP lot to pastures new?...

Marvel S Agents Of S H I E L D Season 4 Episode 10 Review The Patriot

4.10 The Patriot But what this week’s instalment lacks in demonic street racers makes up for in old school SHIELD goodness as the LMD saga continues. Some nice story work is done this week with Daisy Johnson as she continues her transformation from agent on the run to bona fide super hero. As Daisy stands there during a press conference and receives praise from Director Jeff Mace, it’s hard to not think about when we first met Daisy....

Matt S Confused Reviews Iron Man

“Selling weapons?” says Gwyneth Paltrow “Tut tut. That’s not very nice. People should be buying Fair Trade weapons off my husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, not off you, weapons manufacturer Tony Stark.” “And give everyone their money back?” questions Gwyneth. “I said a suit made of iron” replies Robert “Deaf bitch.” He then goes and sets fire to all the bad people that have been buying his weapons. This really annoys his bald colleague, Mr Beardo McWeirdo....

Music To Play Games By Cd Review

And in case you are wondering, we are not talking about some shameless cash-in of licensed tracks, which appeared for ten seconds in the latest first-person zombie murder-athon. No sir, we are talking 12 original tracks inspired by all things computer games and written by people involved in the industry. If you want to find out more about the radio show, One Life Left is broadcast every Monday evening between 7pm and 8pm on Resonance FM in London....

No Escape Review

Every now and then a film comes along, slightly left of centre, with very little fanfare and a poster that promises nothing out of the ordinary, yet manages to work from the first frame to the last. No Escape is one such delight, proving to be an especially tight and well-crafted thriller that relentlessly throws peril and thrills at the audience with barely an intake of breath. Curiously, the promotional material made No Escape look like it would either fall into a bleak political drama, or a by the numbers action flick, but somehow it manages to feel a little different in its execution, incorporating an uneasy and dark humour amongst the violence and thrills....

Orange Is The New Black Tit Punch Review

The plan for Spacey’s House of Cards was to put his face front and center in the advertising campaign. Let his star power speak to Netflix’s promise of desirable original content. Arrested Development was easy. It was the comeback of all comebacks. Again, they slapped Will Arnett’s face on a few posters and need we say more? The king had returned. As the second episode, “Tit Punch,” begins, we really get a sense of how much story there is to tell....

Outlander Untimely Resurrection Review

Outlander Season 2, Episode 5 The past finally caught up with Jamie and Claire in tonight’s Outlanderand, even though we all knew Jack Randall’s nefarious return was coming (right?), that only added to the tension of his reunion with the Frasers in “Untimely Resurrection.” Outlanderwas clever in how it handled this major moment. Rather than have the Frasers and Jack face off in an openly hostile encounter, it bowed to one of the major thematic throughlines of the season: the understated negotiation....

Patrick Melrose Review Benedict Cumberbatch Shines In Darkly Comic Miniseries

The now-fatherless son goes to take a seat in a nearby chair, perhaps to avoid falling to his knees in grief. Instead of displaying any of the emotions such news generally elicits, however, the seemingly dazed Melrose notices something on the floor and goes to pick it up. It’s a used needle, and when he stands again, the camera reveals a small spot of blood on the elbow of his shirt, where he had pricked himself for a high moments earlier....

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Episode 14 Review Sheriff Skyfire

Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Episode 14 There’s an incredibly uncomfortable undercurrent to this episode. Our diverse group of teenagers needs to learn to respect those in law/rule enforcement, all of whom as depicted here happen to be white. When the central character of the episode is Hayley, a woman of color, the whole thing comes off completely tone deaf to our current world. Hayley’s “offenses” were incredibly minor and the rules were extremely arbitrary....

Preacher Season 3 Episode 10 The Light Above Review

Preacher Season 3 Episode 10 Color me old-fashioned, but I remember a time when Martin Scorsese’s art-house film The Last Temptation of Christ got a lot of people riled up over Jesus coming down off the cross to marry Mary Magdalene. Even people who hadn’t seen the movie boycotted its theatrical run simply out of principle. Blockbuster Video offered an edited version of the film for rental, which spurred a different kind of controversy altogether....

Preacher Season 3 Episode 7 Review Hitler

3.7 Hitler Then The Saint of Killers shows up and puts Hitler in chains. Interesting that an episode titled Hitler has almost no Hitler in it, but he’s a character best used in moderation, like Hoover and Featherstone. Both of the Grail’s best operatives (at least, the best that Starr has under direct control) are heavily involved int his episode, with Featherstone being central to Starr’s plot to steal souls for Grandma L’Angelle and Hoover continuing to try to get that last little bit of leverage over Jesse to keep him from misbehaving once he gets access to The Voice again....

Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Episode 25 Review Welcome To The Dollhouse

5.25 Welcome To The Dollhouse It was a gradual process, turning away from Pretty Little Liars. It wasn’t with one episode or one storyline (though the Ezra-is-A debacle almost qualified) that forced me to take a step back from the mystery, the characters and the series in general, but rather a frustration with how convoluted it had become – hard to theorise about and near-impossible to come up with any sort of coherent answer....

Prime Suspect 1973 Episode 6 Review

The shocking event with which last week’s episode ended is quickly revealed to have been every bit as devastating as it seemed. After the explosion, the officers surveilling the British Savings Bank branch rush from their hiding place to search the burnt-out ruins for survivors. Cliff Bentley and café owner Silas have already fled the scene, although Cliff’s shocked look back confirms that he knows son John couldn’t possibly have escaped with his life when the blowtorch ignited....

Psychoville Series 2 Episode 6 Review Series Finale

A depressing fact for you: several times more people watched the dark lord of reality TV Simon Cowell make his swaggering return to Britain’s Got Talent the other week than the entirety of Psychoville series two to date. By episode three, Psychoville’s audience had dropped to a pitiful 661,000 – a poor showing for what has, if anything, been a more consistently amusing series than the first. And as a final, unjust piece of scheduling, the series finale has been displaced by Mock The Week from its usual Thursday night slot....

Q A With The Writers Of Thor And X Men First Class

Besides their contributions this year to Marvel properties, Miller and Stentz were responsible for inadvertently prolonging Frankie Muniz’s career with their first big screen collaboration, 2003 spy-nager classic, Agent Cody Banks. Miller and Stentz met in the early Noughties on a Gene Roddenberry concept subsequently retooled into a vehicle for legendary demigod, Kevin Sorbo, Andromeda. Both gentlemen evidently have fingers in an array of nerdy pies. Beginning with a preview trailer that was well received by the audience and showed more of the emotional depth to X-Men: First Class than had been hinted at in earlier promos, the panel proceeded quickly to the most important question of all....

Revisiting Buffy Season 7 Episode 18

A group of Bringers is chasing an unknown girl through some unknown woods. She finally breaks cover onto a road, where a car just happens to be approaching. Flagging it down, she jumps into the passenger seat and urges the driver to drive away, fast. The driver is Nathan Fillion, dressed as a priest, talking in an abominable Southern accent. And, oh, hey, it’s every post-Texas Chainsaw Massacre horror movie ever, because the girl, Shannon, hasn’t been rescued at all; evil priest Caleb is actually far more dangerous than the Bringers outside....
