Having ticked off several sci-fi tropes in last week’s story, the gang’s search for answers brings them into contact with a more supernatural staple, namely a big old artifact (in this instance, a totem pole) taking pride of place in a temporary exhibition at the local museum....

Of course, when you want to assign a guardian to your kids, the first place you look is family. For the Simpsons, this means elderly Abe (no) or smoking, gravelly voiced Patty and Selma (double no, especially after Homer and Marge see how they tiger parent their adopted Chinese daughter). A visit to Milhouse’s parents sparks an argument and Cletus tells them that anything new that wanders into the house goes in the stew pot....

3.2 Bad White First, let’s take a look at poor Ephraim Goodweather. Eph must decide whether to take the Master up on his offer and steal the Occido Lumen from his pal Setrakian in exchange for Eph’s son Zach’s life. Of course, Eph would do anything to keep his son safe, but he is not into stealing from his Strigoi hunting pals. In Eph’s defense, Team Human doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere with the Lumen and Eph is not buying into the book’s supposed magical powers....

In The Swords of Ditto, you play a hero of destiny who is tasked with taking down the evil sorcerer Mormo and saving the world. Then you die quickly and without honor. That may not sound like the typical tale of a mythical video game hero, but that’s because Swords of Ditto isn’t the typical adventure story....

Thus, we at Den of Geek thought it was overdue that we countdown 2014’s most anticipated titles and figure out what cinema has to offer this year, not to mention what is most worth your time. THE LEGO MOVIE (FEBRUARY 7, 2014) Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think we needed a “Lego Movie,” but I’m happy we have one from comedy’s most recent mad scientists, Phil Lord and Chris Miller....

The Venture Bros. Season 7, Episode 4 “Don’t you know you can’t hide from your own shadow?” “The High Cost of Loathing” begins two months after the bonkers, earth-shattering events of “Arrears in Science,” which is just enough time to let those events sink in and breathe. In spite of this grace period, most of the show’s cast are now aimlessly lost while they attempt to structure the next phase of their lives....

Guts After a perfect, scene-by-scene adaptation of the first few issues of The Walking Dead in episode one’s 90-minute premier movie, the first of the hour-long episodes of The Walking Dead offered the first deviation from Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel in the second episode, Guts. Not just a few deviations, either. We’re talking a major new character in the form of Merle Dixon (the always excellent Michael Rooker), entire new scenes, and, of course, entirely new moments of zombie peril for Rick and the rest of the gang....

3.13 Arrow on the Doorpost The confrontation is a pretty simple one, but it’s a great example of how the show should have been conducting its talkier moments all along. There is something at stake and it was done in a meaningful, telling way. As Rick and the Governor square off, you can see that Rick is in his element for perhaps the first time. As a law enforcement officer in his previous life, he’s surely going to be good at seeing through deception....

8.8 How It’s Gotta Be So the extended mid-season finale of The Walking Dead feels longer than it is, thanks in no small part to some very strange decisions to pad out the episode. Specifically, there’s a LOT of staring at nothing from pretty much everyone. The show opens and closes with montages of close-ups of people staring into middle distance at nothing. In the middle of the episode, just in case you haven’t gotten enough, there’s more staring at nothing....

1.3 Dead Mans The thing I’m really enjoying about The Wrong Mans is that it doesn’t waste time. Every episode introduces a new twist, clears up an old problem, and throws in a new complication for good measure. This week, for a moment, it looked like Sam and Phil might actually manage to scrape through this whole mess and go back to being normal, boring council employees – but since there are three more episodes to go, things soon turned sour again....

Now this is the sort of thing I want to be getting from this show. While last week’s “Hole” was totally apt at emulating a classic Twilight Zone structure, this episode does it all the better. To begin with, Tim and Eric are purely behind the camera this week, and using this show to showcase the large stable of actors they’ve gradually accumulated lends itself quite well to the anthology format....

Timeless Season 1, Episode 4 No doubt about it, Timeless knows just which buttons to push to keep its formula fresh and moving forward just when questions begin to arise about character motivations and the aftermath of conflict. Whether it’s Lucy experiencing the first signs of repeated trauma or Rufus realizing the downside of spying on his colleagues, the emotional journeys of each character fit perfectly alongside the narrative progression....

10: Contamination (Luigi Cozzi, 1981) Italian schlock king Luigi Cozzi brings some considerable ketchup to bear on the cast of his nasty Alien knock-off, as some Giger-like extraterrestrial eggs are brought unwisely to Earth. The eggs have a tendency to moan, emit slime and then burst when in proximity to a human body. Any hapless bystander unlucky enough to be spattered by the remnants instantly and spontaneously explodes in an improbable shower of gore....

Not long after the screenings finished, the first spoiler-free reviews started filtering through, and to call them suitably positive wouldn’t be too far wide of the mark (although that’s not a unanimous view). Slashfilm: “The story is a fun ride to places unknown, and takes some twists and turns you might not expect. The conclusion is a fitting end to the series, and will probably leave you in tears. The last 20-30 minutes are pure brilliance....

After the somewhat ambling pace of the last few episodes, the delectable True Blood got well and truly up to speed this week with the fantastic I Got A Right To Sing The Blues. With Sookie and Bill both in Russell’s clutches, their arrival at the palace means the whole gang is back together, joining as they are Eric and Tara at His Majesty’s pleasure. Almost too confident, Russell’s cheery demeanour befits a villainous vamp that’s older than Jesus, and in true James Bond style, his arrogance means that he reveals his plans to the least trustworthy people at any opportunity....

6.1 Who Are You Really? While Who Are You, Really? couldn’t really answer any of those questions unequivocally, it did present us with what could very well be the end of Bill and Sookie, or rather the end of Sookie and all vampires. Having banished even Eric from her home, it seems Sookie has indeed severed all ties with the fangers – the male ones at least. Despite having survived the assault on vamp central, as well as an encounter with Billeth thanks in no small part to Eric, Sookie, it turns out, is desperate to once again be the innocent, polka dot-wearing, job-having girl she used to be....

Old-age, unenthusiastic Tintin is hard enough to bear, but the fact Altarriba envisioned the treasured comic book character as a voracious lover is what really riled the Hergé estate. Tintin – an image of innocence idealised by generations of children (and adults) the world over – given an erotic drive? Say it ain’t so! Readers of The Pink Lotus are presented with graphic sex scenes and the gimmick that the eponymous hero of the series was actually a bit of a ladies’ man lusting after different female partners....

Abrams and his motley crew, a new hope for Star Trek‘s future has emerged, which generally comes in Hollywood after making a lot of money, which the film has managed to do. Who could have guessed that in a year where heavyweights such as the Transformers, Harry Potter, Wolverine, Terminator, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop, what was once perceived to be the nerdiest franchise in the world would not only hold its own, but eclipse some of them?...

Given that the men are showrunners of what is one of the most popular shows in the world, you might think that reaction would be overwhelmingly positive. But for Star Wars fans who are just beginning to see themselves represented in the franchise, it is a step in the opposite direction.
