True Blood Season 4 Episode 1 Review She S Not There Season Premiere

4.1 She’s Not There Like pretty much every supernatural being in the greater Louisiana area, the fairies want Sookie for good, and she narrowly escapes with a little help from her long-lost grandfather. Her gramps has also literally been away with the fairies, but for over twenty years, and his appearance presents us with the first shock of the season. Sookie is related to Jack Killian, The Midnight Caller himself, otherwise known as Gary Cole, who rolls into True Blood for the briefest of periods, delivering Sookie safely back to Bon Temps before swiftly dying....

True Blood Season 7 Episode 9 Review Love Is To Die

7.9 Love Is To Die The big news of the week is that Bill’s badly misplaced sense of nobility has become something of a suicide mission. Refusing to drink from the vile Ex Mrs Rev Newlin as way to permanently remove himself from Sookie’s life seems, from where we’re sitting, like the most extreme form of the ‘It’s not you, it’s me’ break-up conversation ever conceived. Surely there’s a simpler solution?...

Turn Season 4 Episode 7 Review Quarry

Turn Season 4 Episode 7 The Continental intelligence department’s plot to kidnap Gen. Benedict Arnold (Owain Yeoman) finally gets under way in the latest episode of Turn: Washington’s Spies. Unfortunately, a key agent in that effort — the Long Island farmer Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell), newly enlisted in Arnold’s Loyalist legion — is far more interested in killing his old nemesis, Lt. Col. John Graves Simcoe (Samuel Roukin). “This isn’t about Arnold,” Abe spits out....

Twin Peaks Season 3 Episode 16 Review No Knock No Doorbell

3.16 No Knock, No Doorbell Let’s get this out of the way up front: this was an exhilarating episode of Twin Peaks: The Return that gave me chills all over. How could it not be? David Lynch and Mark Frost finally gave us, after withholding it until the sixteenth hour, what we wanted. That said, I still believe this was a weaker episode than the previous one. For one thing, before the big payoff came, we got a lot of absurdity with hitmen couple Chantal and Hutch....

Underappreciated Actors Jeffrey Wright

The first time he came to my attention was in Shaft, playing the wonderfully arrogant drug dealer Peoples Hernandez. Sporting a completely outrageous but totally believable accent, he stole the show, managing in the process to even outdo Samuel L Jackson – no mean feat. He went on to play Martin Luther King the next year in Boycott. I haven’t actually seen it, but by all accounts, Wright turns in another sterling performance....

Vikings Season 4 Episode 9 Death All Round Review

Vikings Season 4 Episode 9 Last week we endured three brutal deaths, but ironically things slow down in “Death All ‘Round,” as only Erlendur finally succumbs, owing as much to his own hubris as to the arrow that pierces his chest. In the final episode before Vikings heads into its mid-season finale, the pace plods along as steadily as the Northmen’s boats being pulled over wooden tracks, but once again it’s the anticipation of the kings and their stories that sets up next week’s saga almost certain to devolve into a bloodbath....

What Lucifer Season 4 Could Have Been

Lucifer concluded its television run with the May 14 episode, “A Devil of My Word,” by falling on its angel-wing-shield with a closing moment that would have been a bellwether Season 3 cliffhanger if not for the fact that Fox – three days earlier – had just cancelled the series. In what is, perhaps, a sure sign that the show’s final fate has been sealed, executive producers and co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich are now dishing on their nixed Season 4 plans....

What S Happened To The Hostel Series

Now, six years later, a third entry in the Hostel series has been released. Roth is no longer involved. The film has not seen a theatrical release, instead given a low key debut on home video to little fanfare. So the question is, what’s happened to the Hostel series?Hostel Even before seeing the film and knowing the extent of the violence and gore, I questioned the wisdom in that decision....

Whitechapel Series 4 Finale Review

So cannibalism turned out to be a grisly red herring, or rather a slightly blackened Proboscis Monkey. Instead of booking a group of cannibals who had been feasting on residents of Whitechapel, Chandler and Miles had located a group who had a taste for exotic creatures. The actual motive for the murders turned out to be less gruesome, but still disturbing as a doomsday cult were offering the sacrifices of good, virtuous people in order to prevent the End of Days....

William Shatner S Musical Comeback

Shatner has always treated his musical career with a large pitch of salt, even parodying himself by performing a spoken word performance of Eminem’s The Real Slim Shady on Futurama, but after a gap of 36 years Shatner released his second album, Has Been (2004), to rave reviews. Produced and mostly co-written by Ben Folds, Has Been is a brilliant piece of work ranging from the brutal and drum driven I Can’t Get Behind That, a duet with Punk Rock singer/spoken word performer Henry Rollins, and the beautiful That’s Me Trying, co-written by Nick Hornby and featuring singer-songwriter Amiee Mann....

Wolf Hall Episode 4 Review The Devil S Spit

1.4 The Devil’s Spit “Words, just words” is what the young More told a teenage Cromwell when asked what he was reading (cheekily predating Hamlet’s almost identical response by a good seventy years). More wasn’t so dismissive when it came to the importance of words in his prison cell. “You just have to say some words” Cromwell told him, showing his modern politician’s ability to separate public declaration from private conviction....

Xbox One Console Review

As a disclaimer from the get-go – I am a technical layman. I don’t read into the software architecture or dive into all of the different things I can plug into a console. I just want to play the damn thing and have a reasonably streamlined experience while navigating the dashboard. If you’re looking for something extremely technical, you’ve come to the wrong place. I’m only here to tell you how easy/entertaining the console is to use....

Z Nation Season 3 Episode 13 The Siege Of Murphytown

Z Nation Season 3 Episode 13 At long last, the growth of mighty factions and bonkers characters throughout three long seasons of Syfy’s Z Nation have come to a head in, what was supposed to be, the climactic “Siege of Murphytown.” Sadly, what ensued was a battle that was surprisingly light on the action and heavy on the ol’ talky-talk. Murphy confronts Warren for the first time this entire season. You’d think it would immediately come to blows, but they exchanged philosophies instead....

12 Monkeys Meltdown Review

12 Monkeys Season 2, Episode 7 Apparently, 12 Monkeys is not content to dominate the sci-fi sphere as Meltdown ventures into horror territory and does it quite well with enough gore, shadowy figures, and creepy possession drama to satisfy the most scrutinizing fan of hauntings and stalkers. And considering how long the series has held onto the secret of the Witness’ identity, the switch in focus to this persisting mystery is a welcome one, even if the answer remains unfulfilled....

All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace Episode 3 Review The Monkey In The Machine And The Machine In The Monkey

Part documentary, part essay, part soothing, disturbing art project: by now, the rhythm and style of Adam Curtis’ All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace is decidedly familiar. That’s not to say that, as ever, it’s been anything less than enthralling – there’s something endlessly watchable about the way Curtis cuts together his montages of light and sound. Beginning in the Congo in the early 60s, this week’s film takes in space monkeys, Tomb Raider, biology, biochemistry, tribal war, David Attenborough, more monkeys, Richard Dawkins, precious minerals, despotic rulers, plus a side order of monkeys....

Almost Human You Are Here Review

The first thing to note about “You are Here” is how much better it looks. We’re back in what is, at least on the surface, a fully-realized sci-fi world, so that’s a nice touch. You wouldn’t quite notice this from the opening sequence, which deals with Kennex in his anger management class, goes for some cheap laughs…but they’re still laughs. But this scene provides the first clue about just how out of order things have been aired....

Alphas Episode 10 Review The Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects I’m not going to tell you which it is, just in case you’ve not yet watched The Usual Suspects, but it’s a neat, if certainly Christie inspired twist, that presents the ultimate resolution of this well woven if predictable narrative. Instead, I’d like to talk about where the story is ultimately marching us, a progression that’s been in the wind since the earliest Alpha stories. When the team is put under pressure to identify their bad apple, what comes to the surface is the resentment felt in respect of their government handlers, and the ever-present threat represented by Binghampton and the dreaded building seven....

American Horror Story Hotel Episode 4 Review Devil S Night

5.4 Devil’s Night Lady Gaga isn’t a great actress. She’s not going to be putting on a tour-de-force performance like Mare Winningham does in Ms. Evers’ flashback sequence early in the episode concerning her dead son and his death at the hands of Gordon Northcott, the Wineville Chicken Murderer, and she’s certainly not up to the par of the guests of honour at Mr. Marsh’s Devil’s Night banquet. However, she has a certain magnetism....

American Pie Reunion Review

The problem, sadly, is the hour and 20 minutes that comes before it. Because for the sizeable majority of American Pie: Reunion‘s running time, it’s like nothing’s ever changed. The jokes are pretty much the same, it’s just that everyone’s nearing their 40s now. That proves to be a crucial problem for the film, too. The energy and innocence (of sorts) of youth has been exchanged for a bunch of people who don’t have naivety as an excuse any more, but still try to use it....

Arrow Deathstroke Review

We pick up moments after where we left off last week, with Thea hitching a ride with the esteemed Slade Wilson. Now, all things being equal, would YOU get in a car with this guy? I realize that we, as fans of the show, know considerably more about Mr. Wilson’s murderous proclivities, but isn’t his vibe just a little bit… intense? I know, it’s not good to judge a book by its cover, even when that book has elaborately groomed facial hair and a cool eyepatch, but in this case, the scowling, growling-voiced dude who has been throwing shade at your brother might not be the right fella to jump in the back seat with....
