Need For Speed Review

Need For Speed’s petrol-head protagonist Tobey Marshall (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul) is a hero in the Tom Cruise mould: he’s a race car driver. He’s a pretty good race driver, too. But then he has a crisis of confidence… Stuntman and director Scott Waugh (Act Of Valor) executes his driving scenes extremely well, eschewing the obvious CG and pounding music of the Fast & Furious franchise for an approach that’s a bit closer to car movies of the 60s, 70s and 80s (Bullitt even appears on a drive-in movie screen near the start)....

Nightbreed The Director S Cut Is An Entirely Different Film

Here’s a statement from Clive Barker’s office: And here is the full breakdown of special features on both versions of the set. Y’know, I don’t usually get excited about super-deluxe editions, and the regular “special edition” set should be quite enough to satisfy curiosity, but I’ve gotta say, that limited edition three disc version sounds pretty exciting. Then again, I’m a big fan. So much for objectivity. I am, however, a little disappointed that if you want to see the new transfer of the original cut on Blu-ray, you have to buy the limited edition version....

No Ordinary Family Episode 1 Review Pilot Episode

No Ordinary Family is one of those shows that I’ve been curious about, not just because it’s got some successful lead performers in it, but the airwaves seem remarkably short of fantasy titles these days. The pilot is presented in the style ripped directly from the movie Mr & Mrs Smith, in that it starts, interjects, and ends with the Jim (Michael Chiklis) and Stephanie Powell (Julie Benz) explaining their story to a marriage guidance councillor....

No Ordinary Family Episode 15 Review No Ordinary Powell

No Ordinary Powell And, given that their current nemesis is a shape-shifter, it didn’t take the brain of JJ to work out who it was. Yet, and I find myself pinching myself for saying this, the flashback storyline to how we got here was actually rather good in places, and I’d rate this as probably the best story so far in the season. Every time she replaces someone, she makes it really obvious....

Once Upon A Time The Apprentice Review

For the life of me I don’t know why Deadwood actor (and television director) Brad Dourif made an appearance on this week’s Once Upon a Time, but you know what? The reason why doesn’t matter. It’s like asking why the sky is blue: There’s an answer, but to speak it ruins the beauty of the moment. That said, Once Upon a Time might have jumped the silly-shark this week. That’s like jumping the regular shark, only the animal in question is wearing a loud Hawaiian print shirt and a fake mustache....

Peaky Blinders Series 2 Episode 3 Review

In the world of Peaky Blinders, it is increasingly likely that any close association with the Blinders gang will put you in jeopardy. And as the stakes and problems continue to rise for the Shelby family, so does the quality of the series. The other violent moment of the episode comes during a botched assassination attempt on Tommy. Arthur springs to his brother’s rescue, and beats his would-be murderer to a bloody pulp....

Peppermint Review

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve seen it countless times before. Not only that, we’ve seen similar, better–executed stories from Peppermint’s own director and star—Pierre Morel with Taken and Jennifer Garner in TV spy drama Alias, which began with Garner’s character losing her fiancé to an assassination in the show’s pilot and becoming a double agent in order to bring those responsible to justice. Both Taken and Alias are vastly superior to Peppermint....

Philip K Dick S Electric Dreams Episode 8 Review Autofac

1.8: Autofac Set twenty years after a world war destroyed civilisation as we know it, Autofac is the story of a group of resistance fighters eking out a living just outside the encroaching wastelands. They’re resisting the titular ‘Autofac’, a fully automated factory set in motion before the war that has continued to strip the land and spew out unwanted goods in the decades since. The settlement needs the Autofac to shut down so it stops polluting the environment and filling the world with unnecessary products (“clothes, electronics, Christmas decorations…”) but the Autofac just keeps on keeping on....

Power Rangers Super Megaforce The Power Of Six Review

You see, to everyone Power Rangers is something different. For some it’s a piece of nostalgia that connects them to their childhood. For others it’s dark and serious. For some it’s just a vehicle to buy toys. Some even make long running review shows dissecting it in depth. After attending Power Morphicon last week, I really got how much this show means to people in a multitude of different ways....

Primeval Series 4 Episode 3 Review

Have you ever played Warhammer and wondered what a Slaan would look like in ‘real life’ (okay, CG)? Well, this week’s monsters of the week show that the visual effects team are obviously fans of the tabletop fantasy games, as the ‘tree creepers’ bear an uncanny resemblance to the reptilian-men race from the game. While the design guys go all out special effects-wise, with the creepers and the whole Forest Of Doom thing, as well as giving a little nod to Ray Harryhausen’s Valley Of The Gwangi, the actual writers of this week’s episode should hang their heads in shame, as things were just so incessantly dull....

Psych Season 6 Episode 2 Review Last Night Gus

6.2 Last Night Gus No. Mostly. Like it or not, The Hangover pretty much carved its own little niche in the world of 21st century comedy films, but with multiple parodies floating around (and a sequel that, by common consensus, wasn’t really worth the time and effort involved) it was always going to be hard to pull off yet another take on it that didn’t seem needlessly derivative. The good news is that, in that sense at least, Last Night Gus does a perfectly good job – mostly by barely recognising the source material at all....

Rabbit Hole Review

Think of Rachel Getting Married, or this year’s Blue Valentine, both of which are films that, when it came to the Academy Awards, were defined by a single performance (Anne Hathaway for the former, Michelle Williams for the latter), while the rest of the production, cast and crew were snubbed. However, that this is the only recognition granted to Rabbit Hole is puzzling, as it is a superbly nuanced, finely crafted drama....

Riverdale Season 2 Episode 21 Review Judgment Night

2.21 Judgment Night “You’re the Black Hood.” And with that, Riverdale‘s worst kept secret was finally revealed. Ever since Mr Svenson took the fall for being the series’ resident serial killer back before the midseason break, fans were speculating that the true Black Hood was still roaming the streets of Riverdale, waiting to strike again. Even before the past three episodes began indicating that Hal Cooper — lousy father, terrible husband, and a journalist so bad he could easily get a primetime slot on Fox News — was the true Black Hood with all the subtlety of a train derailment, he seemed like the obvious choice....

Robot Wars Episode 4 Review

Hitherto the three most exciting moments in my life were just eclipsed by an episode of Robot Wars. Specifically, the moment in an episode of Robot Wars that Team Apollo went on a flipping rampage. That’s not just a Britishism, Apollo literally flipped its way around the arena on a flipping rampage. It was flipping brilliant. House Bots? House Nots more like. (The mighty Jonathan Pearce can have that one for free....

Sabotage Review

Director and co-writer David Ayer’s last film was End Of Watch, a nail-bitingly intense police thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Ayer brings a similar sense of immediacy to his action scenes, plus the same preoccupation with characters kicking in doors and shouting. Schwarzenegger plays John “Breacher” Wharton, the leader of an elite squad of DEA agents who are trained to infiltrate and wipe out drug gangs with extreme prejudice. As Sabotage begins, Breacher and his team are in the process of blasting their way into a drug cartel’s mansion, where they plan to shoot a bunch of bad guys and make off with a $10m chunk of their drug money in the process....

Salem season 3 episode 4 In Salem, season 3 episode 4, “Night’s Black Agents,” the devil calls to his legion of woodland operatives for the first time and they come up short. Scorpion Revenge Review

“Revenge” opens on what could actually be an exciting episode of Scorpion, as we see a bunch of criminals wearing Wes Anderson-esque animal masks as they put to task some high-tech equipment. Not only is the visual style a lot for the typically drab Scorpion, but this feels different from the moment the masked vigilantes start filling these innocents with bullets. The show is usually not this brutal and violent and these guys really love shooting people, going out of their way to land final bullets in fallen bodies as if the show is trying to validate its coolness....

Sherlock Series 4 Episode 2 Review The Lying Detective

4.2 The Lying Detective Once the ice-pack had been applied and you could see straight again, did the story stand up to prodding? Not all of it perhaps, but in the lurid, implausible realm of Sherlock Holmes, originally filled with putty noses and poison darts, who’s counting? I haven’t been that consistently entertained in front of my TV for a good while. And it all made sense in-world, which is where it counts....
