Anyone with high-level government clearance should know Jack Bauer’s face. Jack entering a United States Embassy should be like William Shatner entering a Star Trek convention or Robert Plant showing his face anywhere in the beautiful city of London. He has to be immediately recognized. Instead, known “terrorist” Jack Bauer is able to waltz into what is essentially the US government’s London hub and cause havoc. Jack’s crashing of the embassy is the main attraction of tonight’s 24: Live Another Day, as hours 2:00 – 3:00 were equal parts head scratching and explosive....
Day 8: 8:00 – 9:00pm It’s clear that Renee’s path has become a very dark and dangerous place, and she’s as much a risk to herself as she is to those around her. This is a great move, in my opinion. Jack’s character in 24 has been fantastic in the past, and has given us a truly epic small screen hero, but as fun as it is to see him take out a terrorist by dropping a ‘jackleg cabin’ [please see the bottom of the article] on him, we’ve not really had any true equals to Jack so far, and although I’m loathed to admit it, he’s in real danger of becoming a little boring....
In no particular order: The Ugly (1997) From the land of the Hobbits comes this effective 1997 Kiwi horror. Set in a mental institution, the film revolves around a serial killer, Simon, and the psychologist trying to get to the bottom of his reasons for killing. This is a very slow burning film with an excellent lead performance from Paolo Rotondo as Simon, a serial killer very much in the Norman Bates mould....
West’s Batman was played for laughs. His ultra-serious caped crusader delivered intentionally ridiculous dialogue with impossible sincerity and deadpan timing. A few years ago, Joe Quesada convinced cult movie-maker Kevin Smith to write a Daredevil arc. In doing so, Quesada sealed the critical acclaim and sales that ultimately left him in charge of Marvel. He also kick-started a new trend – screenwriters coming to comics. It’s good for sales, it’s good for publicity – what could go wrong? Hollywood, it seems, can’t seem to get comics right. If they’re not phoned in, they’re late....
Initial thinking suggested that it was only a matter of time until a new X-Men sequel simply left behind the more expensive (and, after three movies, expired) contracts of Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman et al, and instead starred the “next generation” of mutant actors that had already been introduced. A film starring Shawn Ashmore (Iceman), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde) and perhaps Anna Paquin (Rogue) would contain more than enough talent and just enough star power to carry a movie without the need to feature the original movie’s A-list – certainly in no more terms than a cameo here or there....
We’re back with more American Dad on TBS, and if you had any reservations with last week’s return, this episode feels like vintage Dad and has al the rhythms that the show is known for. One difference though is It seems that TBS’ run of American Dad is sticking with these cold opens, which is absolutely fine by me, and it’s not even the first time the show has employed them....
American Gods Episode 3 “Are you sure I do this with you? Follow the wrong god, I do not see my Tita again,” the woman worries in the “Somewhere in America” vignette that opens “Head Full of Snow.” The introduction of Anubis is beautiful in its own right, but it is also a stakes-raiser — a reminder that who you worship has consequences, at least in this world. Even if you haven’t read the book, it’s pretty clear that Shadow isn’t going to die in the third episode....
The episode once again forgoes time in the present day storyline and jumps right to Sister Jude, driving alone at night with a fierce look of determination on her face. She heads to a meeting with a Nazi Hunter to give him information about Arden. While the Sister is away, “Anne Frank” leads an injured Dr. Arden through the asylum looking for Sister Jude, but runs into a guard instead....
4.3 Edward Mordrake (Part 1) I have to give American Horror Story a lot of credit for its knowledge of history. Not just of its freaks, like Chang and Eng and Edward Mordrake, but of its movie conventions. It’s not quite to the standard of Murder House‘s borrowed horror movie element of the week, but Freak Show continues to impress with its inspired moments. For example, when Dandy is preparing his Halloween costume, there’s a great POV shot of a Dandy-eye-view from behind the mask as he stalks through the Mott house to go kill Dora (the great Patti LaBelle)....
Director Wright has become something of a one-man Merchant-Ivory for the 21st century. Of course, the stylish Brit has tried to step outside of that box by directing contemporary dramas like The Soloist and the vastly underrated Euro-actioner Hanna. But the filmmaker still continues to be primarily known for the lavish period pieces he lenses with Keira Knightley at the center, like the lone rose in a delicately crafted flower arrangement....
1.14 The Odyssey As teased by the end of last week’s episode and the promos that followed, Oliver’s attempt at intimidating his mother ended with him being shot. He is then saved by Felicity and transported to Diggle in his Arrow-cave. From here, the episode is split into two halves. There are the conversations between Felicity and Diggle while they care for Ollie, and there’s the extensive island flashbacks happening in his head....
Arrow Season 5 Episode 16 At long last, Arrow Season 5 has cut all the foreplay, faffing about ,and stalling to deliver an incredibly satisfying one-on-one bout. As if that wasn’t enough, “Checkmate” rewarded viewers for investing in the mayoral aspect of the show with an impressive and intense political drama. The night wasted no time catching the characters up to speed following last week’s surprising reveal that Adrian Chase (newcomer to the cast Josh Segarra) wasn’t the surprising new anti-hero to arrive in Star City, Vigilante, as his comic book namesake implied....
Bah. We’re banned from telling you what we think of both Avatar and Sherlock Holmes until early next week. But in the case of the former, some reviews have been starting to filter out, and the word is very, very good indeed. So here’s a round of early reaction to James Cameron’s ultra-expensive science fiction extravaganza… “So by saying Avatar was really much, much better than expected, that it looked amazing and that the story was gripping – if cheesy in many places – the Guardian is in technical breach of the agreement....
The Southern Air Temple If you’re unfamiliar with the Peabody Awards, they are made to celebrate excellence in radio and television. Last year, when Avatar was honoured, the committee said this about the show: “Unusually complex characters and healthy respect for the consequences of warfare enhanced this American-made, anime-influenced martial-arts adventure.” The big part of that is “consequences of warfare”, and it’s something that Avatar explores thoroughly throughout its three seasons....
