Comic Con Preview Night

If you didn’t already know that The Gaslamp belongs to the geeks, you should be able to spot the clues: Klingon signs on the convention centre transit station, Green Hornet’s car parked nearby, Ecto 1 cruising the streets and Eureka’s Cafe Diem set up for business. The queue to collect tickets for preview night started at 10am, about five hours before the schedule said you could collect them. There were a few hundred people already in the queue by the time I arrived with my sister....

Community Season 2 Episode 19 Review Critical Film Studies

After last week’s somewhat downbeat war crimes-fest, hopes that Community would come back fighting were most definitely not misplaced. Critical Film Studies may not be the out and out laugh fest that we’ve come to expect, but it’s almost certainly a return to form. A reference within a reference, this weeks’ episode is ostensibly an homage to My Dinner With Andre, but that’s just the crispy coating. Critical Film Studies also has a delicious centre in the shape of a series of Pulp Fiction spoofs, the best of which is Shirley dressed as Sam Jackson....

Constantine Episode 9 Review The Saint Of Last Resorts Part 2

1.9 The Saint Of Last Resorts (Part 2) We last left Constantine bleeding in a sewer, shot by Anne-Marie and left to distract the approaching Invunche while she escapes with a baby. Constantine saves himself by allowing the demon Pazuzu to possess him. He must get rid of the demon before it takes over his body, forcing his soul into hell and brining famine and other disasters to the world....

Daredevil Composer John Paesano Shares His Inspiration For Season 2

Many fans of Daredevil can immediately recognize the show’s main title theme, which features a series of repeating notes underlying single piano tones, and Paesano explains that this repetition makes the theme more accessible. “We really wanted to try to keep the score as grounded as possible, and I think the same thing can hold true for the main title,” he said. “We really wanted to make it memorable, and when I hear the word memorable I always think of simplistic....

Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 10 Review Built Not Born

Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 10 For longtime viewers of Dark Matter, the story that unfolds in “Built, Not Born” is one that had been anticipated for quite awhile, and the payoff is quite satisfying. Tying the Dwarf Star transhumanist efforts with Two (whom they know as “Rebecca”) together with the origins of the Android seems obvious in retrospect, but it was a great resolution to one of the most enduring mysteries of the series so far....

Deadpool 2 Post Credits Scenes You Didn T See

There are several Deadpool 2 post-credits scenes, all in varying degrees of craziness. There’s the bit about turning back time (thanks, Cher!). The bit about fixing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The Peter thing. The Green Lantern thing. All of the things, basically. We explained the deep symbolism of them all right here. “There were more X-Force interviews that were talked about,” co-writer Paul Wernick told Uproxx. “One was Chris Evans as Human Torch....

Defiance Episode 9 Review If I Ever Leave This World Alive

1.9 If I Ever Leave This World Alive My immediate reaction to the plague plot was to recall that in the first season of Deadwood there was an epidemic, and this reworking of that idea didn’t actually bring much new to the scenario. Put people under pressure and they’ll return to old and well worn discriminations, which is really easy when they’re different species. What kept going through my mind in this largely uninteresting collection of people who are clearly infected, but say they’re ‘just sweating’, was the story of how Star Trek started....

Defiance Pilot Episode Review

1.1 Pilot As with any overly ambitious cuisine there are parts that work well, and others you’d push to the edge of the plate. But, it all starts well enough. After watching the whole thing, the strongest part for me was the introduction of the main characters, Nolan and Irisa. There is a definite chemistry here, and the way that their relationship isn’t initially revealed gives them an element of mystery and dynamism....

Defiance Season 2 Episode 9 Review Painted From Memory

2.9 Painted From Memory It started well enough, with Kenya trying to fill the narrative holes in what happened to her, and failing miserably. Instinctively Nolan doesn’t like incomplete stories, and it soon becomes apparent that he’s not overreacting. Meanwhile, Kenya’s inability to stay dead sends poor Stahma into a complete tailspin, where she and Datak dig up half of the woods trying to find her grave. As the story unwinds we begin to realise that Niles isn’t the captor, but he is involved along with the good Doc....

Den Of Geek Book Club John Dies At The End

I guess my problem is with David, in his capacity as an unreliable narrator. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against having an unreliable narrator wholesale; sometimes it works in interesting ways and makes for a better story. I think my problem is the specific brand of unreliable narration David is guilty of. He admits to Arnie at one point that he exaggerates when he’s getting into the telling, as well as multiple times questioning whether or not he’s actually sane....

Den Of Geek S Gaming Legends Final Fantasy Vii

RPGs have an almost fanatical fanbase, although this army of gamers was not always a strong as it is now. While the stereotypical zit-laden, spectacle-sporting youths may have happily made the move from the tabletop to the computer screen, the genre was struggling to really penetrate the mainstream market, and RPGs were rarely viewed as killer apps or potential high end money spinners. That would change with Square’s PS1 debut, and Final Fantasy VII brutally broke the mould, melted it down, and made a new one that would be used time and again by many future developers....

Dexter Season 3 Episode 1 Review

I know that other contributors to Den of Geek haven’t warmed to Dexter in the same fashion, but I think it’s a smart and eclectic show that encourages the viewer to think harder than most. But I can accept that its pace can be somewhat underwhelming at times, which is a criticism I’d certainly level at the first 15-20 minutes or so of the new Dexter season opener. The relative normality of Dexter’s life in this first half of the episode begins to grind a little, I mean purely for plot development – why doesn’t he kill someone?...

Dexter Season 5 Episode 9 Review Teenage Wasteland

5.9 Teenage Wasteland The unpredictable nature of Dexter was underlined in red marker this week. Having dispatched Astrid and Cody off to their grandparents earlier in the season, both I and Dexter presumed we’d seen the last of them for now. But Astor’s arrival back at the house not only pushed Lumen to the edge, it also put Dexter’s world into a complete spin. Given the effort he’s put into keeping Lumen’s existence a secret from everyone, how rapidly this entirely fell apart was disconcerting....

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid The Long Haul Review

Last weekend, then, rather than attend a press show, I took my children of varying ages (which tends to be how children work) to the new Wimpy Kid film, The Long Haul. I’ve enjoyed the first three, and particular applaud the quite brilliantly cast company of young performers. But young performers grow old and so, five years after Diary Of A Wimpy Kid 3, The Long Haul arrives with the same director (David Bowery), author Jeff Kinney still heavily involved, but a totally new cast....

Disenchantment Episode 1 Review A Princess An Elf And A Demon Walk Into A Bar

Disenchantment Episode 1 Matt Groening and Josh Weinstein (one of the showrunners on the latter seasons of golden age Simpsons) have some experience with this whole sitcom racket, so they know how to set up a world. The first episode of Disenchantment introduces us to the kingdom of Dreamland and its rather informal medieval fantasy setting. We also get a decent feel for our three lead characters—Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson), Elfo (Nat Faxon), and Luci (Eric Andre)—and the dynamic between them....

Disney Infinity 2 0 Review

If you want to play Disney Infinity 2.0 tomorrow, which is when it lands on UK shelves, you’d need to pick up the Starter Pack. Alongside the disc containing the software, this also includes a few other bits of special hardware. The biggest is the Disney Infinity Base, a platter with a USB cable that you’ll plug into your console, but the most attention-grabbing are the three little figurines. In the case of 2....

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep A Scanner Darkly Folio Society Edition Review

Tête-bêche binding – two novels head to tail in one book, with a front cover at either end – is often associated with cheap genre paperbacks from the 1950s to the 1970s: the very collectible Ace Doubles, for instance. A number of titles by Philip K Dick were produced in this manner, often with a title by a different author on the flipside, such as John Brunner or Leigh Brackett....

Doctor Who A Handful Of Stardust Review

Jake Arnott – of The Long Firm and He Kills Coppers fame – brings together the Sixth Doctor, Peri, and John Dee in the most fun adventure the Time Trips range has seen. As is traditional, the Master’s plan could’ve worked perfectly if he hadn’t got the Doctor involved. He could’ve just helped himself to the necessary equipment and sodded off without attracting any attention. Unusually, he hasn’t bothered with an elaborate disguise, and his insane plan involves a massive overhaul of the established timeline....

Doctor Who Night Terrors Spoiler Free Review

Mark Gatiss’ Night Terrors physically and metaphorically brings Doctor Who back to Earth, back to Britain, and back to the stark urban environments we were used to seeing back in Rose’s time. When, before the titles credits have even rolled, the Doctor virtually winks at the audience and quips that he hasn’t made a “house call” in a while, he’s not wrong. It’s a little over a year since the last budget-saving episode (The Lodger) was broadcast – restricted, as that was, to a few rooms of a flat and some not-so-hilarious kickabouts down the park....

Doctor Who The Shakespeare Notebooks Review

The new BBC Books tie-in The Shakespeare Notebooks follows in much the same tradition of warping history around the Doctor, with its whole audacious premise being that most of the Bard’s works were Doctor Who fan fiction. We don’t know that this is the most unusual tie-in book we’ve seen since Doctor Who returned, but it’s definitely the most pun-heavy, relying on a certain amount of knowledge about the Shakespeare canon and an extensive memory of Who, dating all the way back to 1963....
