Early Man Director Nick Park On His Caveman Sports Comedy

Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) voices Dug, a caveman whose Stone Age tribe is driven out of their bucolic valley by the more advance Bronze Age legions of Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston), who wants to conquer the tribe’s land and strip-mine it. But Dug gets a chance to win the land back by challenging a local team to a soccer match — knowing that his own ancestors invented the game but also that his tribe is too primitive to understand it now....

Electric Dreams Episode 5 Review The Hood Maker

Electric Dreams Season 1 Episode 5 A hunched robot in a Pac a Mac creeps behind a pillar. A quintet of babies with floating umbilical cords dance a ring of roses in mid-air. A neon sign advertises the services of a four-breasted woman. Welcome, say the opening credits, to the world of electric dreamer Philip K. Dick. Though set against the backdrop of the right-to-privacy debate, this version of the story feels as interested in the role of trust in romantic relationships....

Elementary The Five Orange Pipz Review

Sherlock finally made the decision to reveal Kitty’s past to Joan. It was a smart bid to slowly but surely regain her trust (and, it’s Sherlock after all, he’s got an eye on making their work situation as unfettered by interpersonal drama as possible). Joan, in turn, was canny herself, opting to not look in Kitty’s file (sounded dirtier than I meant it to) until Kitty herself insists she do so....

Elementary Season 3 Premiere Enough Nemesis To Go Around Review

As a televised entity, Elementary appears to be firing on all cylinders with a reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work that’s probably in a truer spirit than any that have come before (or since). Yes, yes, I know, shots fired at Sherlock — and you Cumberbatch and Freeman diehards can’t be angry with me, you have only Moffat to blame. By the time the episode was over I realized that we’d essentially just watched a sort-of second pilot....

Explaining Doctor Who The Big Bang

So here’s a quick run down on what I think happened. Most of this is drawn from comments in the show, but you have to go beyond the Pandorica: The Eleventh Hour and Flesh and Stone are also needed to understand everything that happened. Being fair, I’m pretty sure of about 60% of this, less sure of 30% and there’s 10% that’s guesswork (particularly regarding the fate of Auton Rory)....

Extant More In Heaven And Earth Review

I had some initial concern about Molly’s unrelenting desire to make Sparks pay and actually get to her child despite the danger of such covert action. I know her mantra was “No risk, no reward,” but why was she going to these great lengths in such a life-threatening situation? Obviously, John and even Kryger have the same justifiable worry, but then it occurred to me that the baby might be pulling the strings....

Fahrenheit 451 Review A Modern Dystopia For The Trump Era

This faintly hopeful ribbon on an otherwise bleakly inescapable vision of dystopia is not repeated in HBO and Ramin Bahrani’s radically reimagined adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, but I suspect it was on Bahrani’s mind all the same. Because this film is most certainly an attempted restaging of that 1953 book’s timeless warning of a world without knowledge for a 2018 land ruled by the Know Nothingness of Donald Trump; a reborn vision of illiteracy in a time when knowledge is more accessible than ever, and yet “alternative facts” and “fake news” makes our society more distracted and ignorant....

Falling Skies The Pickett Line Review

“The Picket Line” starts with the Masons trundling along in their journey to find Alexis and Anne. Tom and Ben share some bonding time speculating whether Ben’s new alien-baby sis will gain acceptance in human society (conclusion: no). Then their rebel skitter guide comes back and warns them of mauraders…and quickly thereafter dies of his injuries. Once they have Hathaway cleaned up a bit and in a hospital bed, Peralta, Cochise and Weaver hold a quick official meeting where Peralta immediately and without any subtly starts talking about how she distrusts the Volm weaponry....

Fe Review

It’s obvious from the start that Fe is cut from the same cloth as other indie art games like Journey, Bound, and Abzû, opening up a prismatic, ethereal world for players to explore and ponder, sussing out an opaque, slender narrative by unearthing one cryptic clue at a time. If you enjoy games of the poetic, minimalistic, folksy variety, you’ll no doubt find Fe to be a fulfilling experience, though that’s not to say it’s without its own voice....

Fortitude Episode 5 Review

Much of Fortitude’s sense of dread comes from the town’s terrible isolation. The extremity of its position, and of its conditions, makes it difficult to get in and out. While no one is genuinely trapped, well, not explicitly anyway, none of the residents have the option of just slipping off whenever they feel like it. From a social point of view, this makes for some very interesting relationships. It’s hardly suprising, for example, that Natalie Yelburton should have suggested that people hop in and out of bed with one another, or that so many of the formal relationships should have proven to be so porous....

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Episode 7 Review The Bear And The Maiden Fair

3.7 The Bear and the Maiden Fair That is a very important skill to have when dealing with a dialogue-heavy episode, and this one certainly is. This was the romance edition of Game of Thrones, with most of the focus being put on the show’s relationship pairings, from the romantic to the bromantic to the confusingly father/daughter. One of the least developed relationships, Robb Stark and Talisa (Oona Chaplin), actually gets a fair amount of screen time this week and surprisingly, in Martin’s hands, the couple seems to actually have some chemistry....

Geeks Vs Loneliness It S Okay To Not Be Okay

We’ve welcomed back Esther Dark this week, who has a few thoughts on not being okay. More to the point, on why admitting that we’re not all perfect is no bad thing. Over to the brilliant Esther, who’s been watching her Star Wars boxset, we suspect…! Role models are great, whether they are realistic or fantasy. Geeks Vs Loneliness Talking About Periods

This week, we’re in the company of the brilliant Caroline Preece, for a chat about periods. Over the Caroline… Earlier this month, 23-year-old British long jumper Jazmin Sawyers made the refreshingly honest decision to reveal the reason for her pulling out of a competition in Boston – period cramps. Now if more women were honest, Sawyers’ admission wouldn’t be such a surprise, but the reality is far different. Despite around half the population having periods at one point in their life or another, they’re rarely talked about even in the privacy of our homes, let alone in public or in the media....

Geeks Vs Loneliness When Your Job Is Getting You Down

Whatever your feelings on this, there’s inevitably a dividing line between home life and work life, however grey it may be. But also, our approach to work tends to be related to how well we’re enjoying work, and how well we’re being treated there. If you’re having a tough time at work, it often can’t help but grind you down. Furthermore, if you find yourself working for people who take little notice, or seem to have little appreciation, of what you do, it can be soul destroying....

BoJack’s latest season sees the horseman in the middle of the Oscar race, his legacy hanging in the balance, with the series going to some of its most painful places yet. “A man’s real possession is his memory. In nothing else is he rich, In nothing else is he poor.” Episode two of Grimm season four picks up with Renard’s death, but wait, there is hope for him when the leggy blonde stops time and resuscitates him with a magical double-headed, two-hued, snake. Hannibal Season 2 Episode 7 Review Yakimono

2.7 Yakimono We know that there are many kinds of intelligence, and Bryan Fuller’s series represents several of them. There’s Katz, Zeller, and Price – all clearly keen at critically evaluating evidence. They may not know what that evidence means, but they are rarely wrong about what it says. Then there’s the craven but quite cunning Freddie Lounds. You obviously do not stay in her line of business without being particularly skilled at reading people and determining what weakness will be most effective to exploit....

Haven Season 5 Premiere Review

That’s right, season five of Haven is off with a bang and to celebrate I’m apparently going all Weird Al on The Music Man with it — you know you are impressed at the sheer volume of media ephemera ranging about inside my skull, you know you are. There was no slow warm-up during this premiere. In an era where TV shows such as Boardwalk Empire think nothing of leaping ahead 7 years, killing off fan favorites with a line of throwaway dialogue, it was refreshing to see Haven pick back up right where it left off: With Mara taking possession of Audrey’s body and getting to the business of bringing William and his “box of goo” back from the otherside....

Heroes Season 3 Episodes 1 And 2 Review And Predictions

Tim Kring had said that he’d gone back to the basics that made Heroes such a success in the first place and so I don’t think it is a surprise that the first couple of episodes remind me a lot of season one at its finest. This is very much in evidence at the start of season three as our heroes, and villains, are literally scattered across time and space and the narrative repeatedly jumps from storyline to storyline....

Heroes Season 4 Episode 12 Review

As a dry run for the eventual (inevitable?) conclusion, we have this, the final episode of the year and, traditionally, the big cliffhanger to keep us chomping at the bit over the hiatus. Unfortunately, the episode doesn’t really deliver that. Come next year when the show returns, we’ll be lucky if most of us even remember the events of this episode, since it stuck so closely to the Heroes template that it could’ve come from any part of the series....
