Love’s second season doubles down on both its commitment to relationships as well as its flawed honesty, becoming an even more layered show in the process. On the cusp of its new season, we chatted with series co-creator and star, Paul Rust, about finding the authenticity in relationships, the importance of damaged characters, and writing non-existent theme songs for movies. DEN OF GEEK: Love was one of my absolute favorite shows from last year due to just how real and honest of a relationship story it presented....

No Ordinary Sidekick Quite why they thought this would be fun is beyond me, because I found this entire part of the show tiresome in the extreme. It also generated some head-slapping moments, like when Katie Andrews is told by The Watcher that his name isn’t Will, but Joshua, and she accepts it like he’s just told her he changed cologne. I know she’s supposed to be somewhat naive, but nobody is that stupid, surely?...

Reviewing TV shows, it’s rather easy to become cynical, and see failure before it’s truly materialised. And I say that because deep down I’d already dismissed No Ordinary Family as far too derivative to have any real legs, after seeing the pilot. But now, having seen the first real story, the scenery looks a lot more attractive than I’d anticipated. Part of my renewed optimism about the show is due to many of the issues I had with the pilot having now been addressed....

I even, at times, pay the excessive fees and actually buy food in a cinema and for all the moaning about irritating chavs with phones, half hour adverts and the unreasonable starting times, there is still something fun and endearingly entertaining about sitting and watching a film with an audience. So then to the above company and the focus of my rant, the lovely Odeon and its supposed passion for film which I personally feel is really nothing more than a hollow lie....

Felix: “to my galaxy of women: thank you for nurture” The Beth artwork was a nice touch, although I’m personally still hoping for a Paul shout-out somewhere. I must say, it’s pretty amazing that the show hasn’t bothered to replace Sarah’s love interest, and has instead chosen to have Cosima and Delphine be the main couple for the show. Speaking of which, I wonder what Delphine was about to suggest they do with their newfound freedom?...

Stop swearing? You’d have more luck getting the Shelby men to wear tutus, Pol. Arthur and John are dangerously resentful at their demotion, Polly’s aspiring to the bohemian classes, Michael’s being kept for best but gagging for violence and Ada is still half-civilian, half-Shelby with her head turned by the prospect of a new life in Boston. Tommy’s a contradiction in himself. He says he wants to prioritise legitimate business, then, in an unsettlingly powerful display of Cillian Murphy’s range, asserts himself as a savage Blinder in front of his enemies....

Cooee Poldark! Isn’t that out-of-control dot on the horizon none other than old flame Elizabeth, belly fit to burst with the fruits of the illicit night you shared last series, on a runaway horse heading for the cliff edge? Make haste sir! To take a heartless view, were Elizabeth and her under-the-table baby to gallop off a precipice into the crashing waves below, it might not be the worst thing in the world for Ross Poldark....

What we got was a better then expected team up episode that featured a magic car that needs to be repaired, Scott stealing a bike, and general silliness. Nothing amazing but not the apocalypse we thought it would be. Flash forward to 2014. A season that’s supposed to be one big tribute to the history of the franchise and… 1: Is this the actual RPM dimension (RPM Prime if you will) or is it an alternate world?...

4.2 Turn of the Shoe Starting with Spencer, she gets a bit of a shock when UPenn reject her application. It’s not surprising that even a type-A, over-achiever like Spencer would struggle to maintain academic excellence while also dealing with murder mysteries and stints in mental hospitals, but she takes it pretty hard all the same. She claims to be the first of her family to not attend the college and Ezra warns her against using the same essay, which details her experiences with A and subsequent breakdown, for other applications....

4.6 Under The Gun Anyway, ignoring Spencer and Toby’s trip to Ravenswood, there was still plenty of drama going on back in Rosewood. Hannah’s problems are only getting worse, making it clear to everyone that this new A isn’t messing around. It’s grown far beyond high school hijinks and now the girls’ nemesis is capable of murdering a thorn in her side and pinning it on one of their families....

1.3 The Fear of Flying That’s not to say we don’t get some more character development – we do – but there’s no further mention of the cryogenically frozen UK ARC team member, or Angelika’s plans for the team, or any other development of the anomaly mythology. I’m hoping that PNW doesn’t do a Desperate Housewives and book-end the series with the plot and then thrust filler into the middle....

As the action moves to inland waterways, the team meet up with another ‘future’ creature in the form of an evolved shark. Begging, stealing and borrowing from every water-themed horror scenario, the team go through every cliché in the book with things underwater bumping boats and members of the team falling overboard while a evil-looking fin draws ever closer. It’s all been seen before, but hey, it’s all fun and the future shark isn’t too bad, especially when the thing gets gutted....

Following on from the cliffhanger of last season’s battle with the ‘future predator thingy’, and returning to the present after his ex-wife Helen did a runner through one of the portals, Dr Nick Cutter appears in a slightly alternative reality, shocked to find his new girlfriend Claudia Brown doesn’t exist. For anyone who watched the first series, this missing character is one of the few things which has changed for season two....

When Shawn and Gus receive the call to assist on an Interpol investigation the guys spring into action across the pond in England. With Shawn narrating in his best cockney accent, we discover that it is none other than Pierre Despereaux that has infiltrated the crime stopping organization. Under the guise of Roylston Cornwallace Staley, Despereaux is his usual smooth self trying to work what appears to be a long con with some well placed English criminals....

12.3 Timewave This is awkward. If it weren’t for the fact that no one sets out to make bad TV, we’d almost think that Doug Naylor was going meta with this one. How rubbish can an episode that lampoons criticism possibly be? Well, contrary to the dopamine release that reviewers supposedly get from slagging something off, (cheers, Kryts) it gives us no pleasure to say that Timewave is not up to the high standard that Red Dwarf XII has set in the last two weeks....

In its second episode, Resurrection continues to be a pretty solemn affair, but one with enough mystery brewing. As long as this show keeps pushing towards it’s main question, how have these seemingly dead people returned, with urgency and speed, there’ll be plenty to do. But you have to wonder how long they can keep this central mystery going before the audience runs out of patience. This is a problem several high concept mysteries have, how long can you stretch the premise?...

3.6 Booby Trap Meanwhile, the Enterprise has encountered an old debris field from a centuries old-war, and discovered a distress signal coming from a derelict ship. Picard can barely contain his excitement and goes full Comic Book Guy over his love of historical starships until the rest of the crew vote to beam him over there until he shuts up about it. Finding the ship littered with corpses, Worf, Data and Picard watch the captain’s final log entry in which he regrets leading his crew to their deaths, then all three beam back to the Enterprise....

3.19 Captain’s Holiday Recognising his stress, the senior staff conspires to send him on a vacation. He resists, but eventually the combined badgering of Troi, Riker and Crusher suddenly changes his mind (to be fair, you’d leave too if you have to face that.) At Riker’s insistence, Picard visits the nearby pleasure planet Risa, planning to read some dull books and work on his v-neck tan. No sooner has he beamed down to the surface than he’s accosted by Vash, a woman he’s never met, who kisses him as a way of hiding from Sovak, a Ferengi who’s chasing her....
