The conceit of this one though owes just a little to the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedies of the late 80s and 90s, in that it’s Johnson who’s playing against type. We first meet his and Hart’s character in their high school days, with Hart the popular, loved by everybody Calvin Joyner, and Johnson the overweight, bullied kid. Fast forward 20 years, and Calvin is an accountant with marriage problems, whilst Johnson’s Robbie Weirdicht has become unicorn-loving gentle giant Bob Stone....

Tracy’s issues with her mom, Brenda, have her chain-smoking by the window in dreadful anticipation of her arrival. It all comes down to Brenda’s epic cougarosity. Tracy barely had tits, and Brenda was stealing her thunder at pool parties. Tracy is so tired of being outdone by her own mom that she gets wasted on booze she doesn’t like and nearly has a threesome with two strange guys just to keep up....

In Chuck Versus The Predator the majority of the action takes place in the Buy More, avoiding some of the dual track plotting they’ve been stuck with recently. Previously they’ve talked about the Beverly Hill’s Buy More store, but we discover the rivalry goes deep when, at the start of the story, the green shirts turn up to find their shop has been decorated with toilet paper. The leader of the Beverly Hill’s Buy More turns up to gloat, played by Matt Winston, who I remember best when he was Temporal Agent Daniels in Enterprise....

Following Pierce’s Andy Dick-induced overdose last week, the toddler trapped in a pensioner’s body spends his recuperation throwing his toys out of the pram in a big way in Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking. Calling the group to the hospital under the pretence that he’s dying, Pierce sets about leaving each member a ‘legacy’ designed to mess with their heads and inflict as much emotional torture as possible, while Abed makes a documentary out of the ensuing pain....

After last week’s space-themed shenanigans, the superb Community was back this week with perhaps its strangest episode ever. Messianic Myths And Ancient People, does exactly what is says on the tin. Yup, it’s the religious episode. Initially reluctant, a quick skim through the New Testament is enough to convince the movie geek that what the world needs is a religious movie for the post post-modern generation. Cue an immediate transformation into the new messiah, complete with leather trousers and fright wig....

1.2 The Darkness Beneath Halloween night brought us the second pilot—er, episode—of Constantine, and frankly, you probably saw scarier things if you went out partying. The plot is rudimentary, with a few unmemorable monsters and even less memorable side characters thrown in. Making more of an impact is new leading lady Zed, but whether she truly shines is yet to be seen. Constantine divines trouble in the coal mining town of Heddwich, Pennsylvania, where miners are dying in violent accidents and strange creatures lurk in the mines making a telltale knocking sound....

I guess now we know why Liber8 didn’t care about the consequences for the mayor’s live confession in the last episode. The new battle strategy Travis mentioned earlier is in full effect this week, and it’s great to FINALLY see our terrorists (freedom fighters?) working on a plan that takes full advantage of their future knowledge. Discrediting or exploiting the companies that will one day become the Corporate Congress is brilliant!...

Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis) and Paul Hodges (Tracy Morgan) are the unlikeliest cop partnership you’ll ever see. Jimmy is a no-nonsense tough guy. Paul is kind of a goofy, doughy guy whose idea of the bad cop routine is to grab a suspect around the neck and start shouting gibberish quotes from all his favorite movies, even if “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for!” doesn’t fit the occasion. Still, somehow, the two have managed to thrive for nine years, probably because they’re so funny for the other cops to watch....

Seemingly refreshed by this experience, Cronenberg followed M.Butterfly with his controversial adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel, Crash (1996), while he straddled the new millennium with the satiric sci-fi thriller eXistenZ (1999) and his haunting adaptation of Patrick McGrath’s novel, Spider (2002). However, as the film market changed, Cronenberg found funding for his own, self-produced projects becoming increasingly difficult and once more this proud ‘auteur’ was faced with the prospect of directing other people’s scripts....

1.2 Pine Fresh Scent More properly, Susan Wokoma and Cara Theobald’s energy sells it, pepped up by Howard Overman’s characteristically flippant, filthy script. The chemistry between the co-leads (hero Raquel is decidedly not the comedy sidekick here) is Crazyhead’s engine. Episode two developed the show’s mythology sparingly, spending more of its time building the double-act between Amy and Raquel. We learned about the latter’s half-demon parentage and were treated to an impressive demonstration of her burgeoning powers when she went all Carrie White at the local ice rink....

2.3 The Voyage Of The Damned After getting thrown off the boat he was hoping to abscond with after doing a pretty good Riario impersonation (complete with hipster hat and Renaissance sunglasses) and getting in a sword fight with the boat’s rightful owner Duke Alfonso, Da Vinci, Amerigo and Zoroaster swim back to shore and try to put together a secondary plan. Fortunately, there is a budding fish market in Florence and that’s where Leonardo derives the inspiration for his next mad invention, a submarine with grappling hook grippers to secretly sneak out to where the ship is moored and use the ship’s cargo of slaves to overthrow the crew, kick off Alfonso, and make for the New World....

Episode One ended with Matt being shot in the head. Luckily his bulletproof mask kept him alive (take that, comics version, with your stupid cloth mask) but he’s not in a good way. His senses are fading in and out and he’s struggling to control them. Well, I guess that’s one way of nerfing your protagonist. Though this sort of plot can come across a little too convenient at times if it’s badly handled so fingers crossed....

Elektra is a major part of Daredevil’s mythology, so it’s almost surprising that Season One didn’t immediately jump the gun by introducing her early in the same way the movie did. Instead, we got to see Matt established before his life was turned upside down by the return of his old flame – and that makes her presence all the better for it. Generally speaking, Elodie Yung really sells Elektra as an incredibly complex, inscrutable and seductive presence....

How much free reign do you get in regards to design? Does George Lucas have as much input in The Clone Wars as he does in the films? Many of the episodes feature visual references and in-jokes to the films, how much time do you spend on this and can we expect more of this in the future? What was your favourite ‘classic’ trilogy reference? It’s a lot of fun to include those references, but we try not to let it overshadow the stories we are trying to tell....

In the film, no one knows what Stanfield’s “L” stands for or how he became “the world’s greatest detective.” But we get more than a few hints as Kira continues to elude L, and the detective has evermore time on his hands. Time he doesn’t know what to do with. This, along with the restless behavior he exhibits after consuming an abnormal amount of sugary confections, might cause a few unexpected personality tics when he is talking with others....

1.12 Everything Is Broken Where the finale was undoubtedly at its best, as it has been all season, was with Stahma and Datak. For twelve episodes, the writers have been playing a game where we get to guess just how ruthless they are, and now finally in this story it’s painted big and colourfully. It wasn’t much of a guess that Datak wouldn’t get what he wanted, though when he was actually made Mayor it looked like he’d achieved that desire....

2.12 All Things Must Pass & 2.13 I Almost Prayed I’ve had issues with Tommy’s character all season, and here it all came to a head. Because a large amount of All Things Must Pass was occupied with making him seem a more sympathetic character, back-filing unseen events only then to let him die seemed like a waste. It felt like that three week homework project that a child gets up thirty minutes early to complete on the day they’re meant to hand it in, and left this reviewer wondering why they bothered....

I almost want to leave it at that, but a) that wouldn’t really tell you very much about this episode, and b) that would rob me of the opportunity to have a damned good rant. So I’ll carry on. Reading back over that paragraph, is there any reason at all that it all had to happen in the space of one episode? It’s not a lot of time to pack in as much as the writers seem to want to....
