Capture The Flag Review

It also has nothing to do with Unreal Tournament or Doom, sadly. So far, so not much. But what gives Capture The Flag some unexpected depth is the family story that’s actually at the heart of it. For young Mike comes from a family of astronauts, none of whom have yet been to the moon. More than that, his father and grandfather – Scott and Frank – don’t talk, and it’s not clear, at least at the start of the film, why that is....

Cold In July Review

Opening in East Texas in 1989, the movieintroduces us to Richard Dane (Michael C. Hall), a framer and family man, who awakens to find an intruder in his home. He investigates, gun in hand, surprises the burglar, and in a startled moment of confusion, his gun goes off, killing the intruder, who conveniently turns out to be a wanted felon. Simple enough, especially in Texas, a state that takes a fairly relaxed attitude towards circumstances like this....

Collision Episode 5 Review

In a way I’d rather they had just let it rest with the question over what caused the crash. It would have been the braver way to end a drama that was more about questions than answers. That other policeman had the right idea when he said to Stallwood, “We don’t need to know why. I want you to wrap this one up and move on.” But no, they had to go and show us the whole crash over again with the wasp in the frame....

Da Vinci S Demons Episode 5 Review The Tower

1.5 The Tower Florence, at its core, is a city of spectacle. When times are rough, the leading lights of the city band together with their best friends and put on a show that will save the community centre! Or, in this case, they get together, put on a play, and try their best to mollify the nervous Florentines while impressing the King and Queen of Spain. However, there’s more than just a play to distract people from the looming specter of Roman invasion; there’s also a high-profile show trial involving the most famous artist in Florence – one Leonardo Da Vinci – that hits all the right notes for an awesome judicial spectacle....

Dark Matter Going Out Fighting Review

Dark Matter Season 2, Episode 9 The protagonists in Dark Matter have been moving smoothly from one dilemma to the next in their quest to free themselves from their past, support each other as a family, and either do something good with their lives or simply survive. In the process, the story is being woven ever tighter each week, upping the stakes, diving deeper into the characters, and bringing past elements into clearer focus....

Destiny 2 Forsaken Review The Bungie Shooter Revived

Editor’s Note: This Destiny 2: Forsaken review doesn’t take all endgame content or the expansion’s upcoming raid into account. Once we play through all of that content, we’ll update this review with a score. Bungie’s E3 announcement that the next large expansion for Destiny 2 would feature the death of a fan favorite character made a stir. It also raised expectations for Destiny 2’s version of the first game’s landmark The Taken King expansion....

Dexter Season 3 Episode 5 Review

But that’s something of a sideshow to the perpetual domestication of Dexter by Rita, who, encouraged by Miguel’s wife, has started to hunt for a bigger home. Dexter doesn’t really want to relinquish his apartment, from where he pursues his hobby, but the emotional screws are beginning to turn. They don’t actually work, but Dexter is sensitive to Rita’s annoyance even if he’s not reacting as she wants him to....

Dexter Season 8 Episode 8 Review Are We There Yet

8.8 Are We There Yet? In previous reviews I haven’t been a big fan of Sam Underwood (Zach), but in this one he really upped his game, making himself quite likeable at a number of points. What I had much less time for were the awkward interactions between Hannah and Dexter, which concluded in probably the most unnatural lovemaking scene I’ve witnessed for some time. Perhaps it was the creative choice to make sure that Yvonne Strahovski didn’t display a nipple, or that the two actors were really embarrassed, or some other reason but it didn’t work....

Doctor Who The Doctor S Wife Spoiler Free Review

And you can see his point. To call The Doctor’s Wife eagerly awaited would show little sign of understatement. Neil Gaiman? Doctor Who? An episode called The Doctor’s Wife? It’s as if someone sent a targeted gift to the very heart of Who fandom, one wrapped in incredibly posh paper for good measure, and accompanied by a generous slice of quite delicious cake. Which, of course, brings with it a mountain a pressure....

Doctor Who The Hungry Earth Spoiler Free Review

The people staffing the mine too have clearly been swatting up on their Armageddon (the film). For they’re expert drillers, who – when we meet them pre-credits – have managed to reach previously uncharted depths. Yet, their joy is inevitably quite short lived, as we jump into an episode that gets off to a fairly bleak start in all, as the night security guard discovers not everything is quite what it seems....

Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 6 Vampires Of Venice Review

Given that the back end of Flesh And Stone had a bit of an end of series feel about it, it’s fair to say that Vampires Of Venice had a bit of a job on its hands. The first of these was the relationship between Amy Pond and Rory. Much has been made of Amy Pond appearing to be another assistant fancying the Doctor since the end of last week’s episode, but we still suspect that there’s more to the character than that....

Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 8 Review The Hungry Earth

The return of the Silurians is a logical choice for this current series of Doctor Who. For we’re in a run of the show where enemies have proper reasons for their actions, and given how comparably untapped the Silurians have been since the days of Jon Pertwee, they’re an interesting choice to bring back. And in many senses, it’s a traditional monster tale, albeit with quite a dark edge. There’s a chase through a graveyard (interestingly with a child being chased), people being pulled underground, and the regular build up before the creatures themselves are revealed....

Doctor Who Series 6 Episode 9 Review Night Terrors

6.9 Night Terrors I hope that, now the episode is out there for all to see, you see what I mean. Mark Gatiss does – both physically and metaphorically – bring Doctor Who back to Earth, back to Britain, and back to the urban environments we were more used to seeing back in Rose’s time. It’s not a bad thing; we’ve been around the Universe with Mr Moffat a few times already, and it’s just worthy of note how much the story telling of Who is shaped by the money and effects that producers see fit to lavish on any given episode....

Dog Gaming Legends Shenmue

Most would agree that the majority of games considered to be legends have one thing in common – innovation. While breaking new ground isn’t always required for a game to be considered great, it certainly helps, and if done correctly, not only lifts the game head and shoulders above the rest, but can redefine an entire genre. Legendary Japanese designer, Yu Suzuki, responsible for such classics as Outrun, Space Harrier, Super Hang On and Virtua Racing has often walked the innovative line, but perhaps never more so than with his epic free-roaming action adventure, Shenmue....

Dracula Untold Review

Dracula Untold‘s opening sees first-time feature director Gary Shore’s unique visual style immediately showcased – a quick Google will soon bring up links to the mock trailers that helped secure him his three picture deal – as the camera pans in slow motion through the three dimensional graphics he used in Wolverine Vs The Hand, and it’s one of the film’s strongest assets. That visual identity remains a constant presence and succeeds in lifting Dracula above the monotony that usually accompanies CGI-based horror films, where large-scale destruction is now quite the norm....

Ducktales Episode 5 Review Terror Of The Terra Firmians

DuckTales Episode 5 DuckTales is making a serious case for it being the best mix of comedy and adventure genres ever. One moment this episode has Launchpad seriously thinking he’s a mole person and another the team is desperately trying to survive a crashing train. DuckTales is more than just an adventure show with a few quips, when it wants to be funny it’s genuinely hilarious. It can also be extremely intense when it needs to be....

Dynasty Episode 2 Review Spit It Out

Dynasty: Season 1, Episode 2 This week Dynasty doubles down on its deliciously campy nature, and it pays off. The obvious comparison for this show is Gossip Girl, and like GG, it’s certainly burning through plot. The sex and scheming are still pretty low-key in comparison, but they get points for Fallon doing it funeral-adjacent and basically engaging in sex work when she refers to paying off her debt the hard way....

Essential Avengers Volume One Review

Released in 1998, only a few years after Marvel had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a movie was outright unthinkable, Essential Avengers advertises that it, “Contains over 20 issues of continuity!” What tomfoolery. For anyone interested in a head count though, the issues here run up to Avengers #24. You’d expect that to mean two years’ worth, but the collected tales here were spread between 1963 and 1966. Essential Avengers is printed in stark – pun intended – black-and-white, as with other books in the format....

How else could you describe the youth experience in the ‘90s other than to say that everything sucks? The glorious excess of the ‘80s is wearing off, late night talk show hosts are teaching us how to be cynical and carry a sense of ironic detachment, Kurt Cobain is dead, and you have to rewind the damn tapes yourself. Instead, however, Everything Sucks! goes in an opposite direction. It presents a much more conventional high school story than could have reasonably been anticipated going in....
