Heroes S1 7 Review

Elsewhere, Micah makes an out-of-order payphone work, just by touching it. While it figures that he’d inherit his parents’ genes, and would have some powers, wouldn’t they be the same powers his parents had? Then he wakes up. Ah, it was a dream, and judging from his other characteristics, probably a wet one at that. Apart from his apparent love of old men, this scene raises one important question. Why does Peter Petrelli still believe he can fly?...

Heroes Season 3 Episode 24 Review

In a story entitled I Am Sylar there’s a strong hint who will occupy the most screen time, and that’s not an idle threat as this sociopath superman gets most of the exposition. Instead of taking on the other heroes he spends much of his time fighting his inner demons. The story starts with him waking in the apartment of the FBI agent whose life he’s taken over. Confusingly, he looks like the agent until he transforms back into Sylar, at which point he discovers that he’s got an extra tooth!...

Humans Series 3 Episode 2 Review

“The bomb changed everything” Max tells Mia and Niska. He’s not wrong. Before it, Max preached about hope and reaching out a hand of solidarity to humans. After the bomb, he won’t even reach out a hand to his brother Leo. Ivanno Jeremiah conveys Max’s complex feelings—desperation, ambivalence, fear, grief—without once betraying the Synth mode of expression. Staying within such a narrow physical and vocal range must be an serious handicap to an actor tasked with telling an emotional story....

Jackie Review

The film dramatises a pivotal LIFE magazine interview by reporter Theodore H. White (here represented by Billy Crudup as an unnamed character), which took place in the week following John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963. Mrs. Kennedy reserves strict editorial control over the cover story, but insists on fulfilling her duty as First Lady by putting on a brave face for the American people. Kennedy was the last President of the United States to be assassinated and coming in the advent of the television age, it’s one of the most documented events of the last century, from the Zapruder film to the countless conspiracy theories....

Juan Of The Dead Review

Writer and director Alejandro Brugués’ Juan Of The Dead doesn’t bring anything radically new to the walking dead genre, but in locating the basic template to Havana, Cuba, it immediately finds ways of surprising and shocking its audience. This isn’t to say that Juan is at all scary, however; like Shaun Of The Dead, it’s too playful and packed with in-jokes and references to shock, and its low budget (roughtly $3 million) means its gore effects are cheesily grim rather than stomach-churning....

Killjoys Season 4 Episode 5 Review Greening Pains

Killjoys Season 4 Episode 5 “If it’s beyond me, then Johnny doesn’t stand a chance.” For now, let’s refer to him as the child, and it’s his rapid aging and the physical complications that accompany this condition that dominate “Greening Pains.” From a narrative perspective, having the child age so rapidly conveniently prevents Dutch and the crew from having to cope with a newborn on board Lucy, but now that he’s a well developed teenager, certain aspects become necessarily more complicated....

Larry Crowne Review

Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is a well liked, dedicated employee of Umart, your local big box retailer. He likes his job, which he entered after spending twenty years in the Navy, but there’s a little problem. Larry’s opportunities for advancement are limited, thanks to his lack of college education. Hence, rather than getting another employee of the month award, Larry gets a pink slip. His solution? Go back to college....

Legends Of Tomorrow Night Of The Hawk Review

Legends of Tomorrow, season 1, episode 8. Joe Dante directs this week, and he takes all the “weird idyll” skills he developed on Gremlins and The Howling and cranks it to 11. A meteor crashes next to a couple of greasers mid-street race, and Vandal Savage, just waltzing through the woods, presumably meteor and/or truffle hunting, finds it, creeps out past the crashed greasers, and does…something… to them. Meanwhile, the crew is settling into their 1959 cover stories....

Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 13 Review No Country For Old Dads

3.13 No Country For Old Dads This is relevant to this episode review because I have a confession: my attention wandered during this episode. I don’t think it was because of anything the show did or didn’t do: I definitely have asides about how great lines or story points are, but I wasn’t rapt with attention for the full hour. When I pulled back and really looked, it wasn’t anything the show did or failed to do....

Lethal Weapon Season 2 Episode 17 Review The Old Couple

Lethal Weapon: Season 2, Episode 17 “If this goes south tonight I might be stuck living with you forever.” Lethal Weapon is no stranger to setting its crime of the week in some very curious environments, whether it’s the world of plastic surgery, drag racing, or even surf culture. The series knows how to take an unusual area and pair it with a surprising crime and create something awfully compelling in the process....

Lights Out Episode 3 Review The Shot

The Shot After the violent conclusion to last week’s episode, it would have been safe to assume that The Shot would carry on the gangland storyline and perhaps shed some more information on the shadowy Brennan, who appears to be pulling strings that will embroil Lights, both into his own criminal empire and back into the fight game. However, in this episode, Brennan was largely a nonentity (with the exception of a brief but key moment where we are reminded of how deep and far-reaching his political influence is), as we focused on the main players in Leary’s Gym, manager Johnny, coach Pops, contender Omar, and, of course, Lights himself....

Looking Back At Star Wars Episode Iv A New Hope

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was only the third feature film Lucas had directed, at the time and was an immediate hit when it came out in 1977, changing the movie game forever. Even the opening credits, which crawl across the screen at an angle, setting the film “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” before disappearing into the black, end-of-frame abyss, has become a prime example when thinking about the importance of the beginning and end credits....

Mad Dogs Episode 3 Review

For most of us, a bad holiday will immediately conjure up images of leaking toilets, dodgy Greek salads or a cancelled flight. For the luckless group of individuals in Mad Dogs, however, their trip to the sunny climes of Majorca has been doomed almost from the start. Within hours of arriving on the island, the group’s old friend, Alvo, has been gunned down, they’ve unwittingly stolen a boat, engaged in a drug deal, and as of last week, have ended up with a corpse in a fridge and a female policeman hot on their trail....

Mad Men Season 5 Episode 9 Review Dark Shadows

Fat was a feminist issue in this week’s Mad Men, in an episode that featured more bristling rivalries and bruised egos than you’d see backstage at a kiddie beauty pageant, and a display of parenting only slightly less noxious. Slights were felt: Peggy was narked at Roger using Ginsberg for another secret client assignation, Pete didn’t get the profile he wanted from the Times, Sally’s feelings were hurt, Don felt competitive, and Betty felt fat....

Mad Men Season 7 Episode 14 Review Person To Person

7.14 Person To Person Yes, Person To Person dealt with dying, grief and the ultimate disintegration of Don’s psyche, but that’s an average day on Mad Men. It was also a riot. When I wasn’t in emotional pieces over that “Birdie…” “I know” phone call or Sally helping Bobby to make dinner, or Leonard’s monologue, I was in bits over the gags. It started by teasing the audience with a rip-roaringly incongruous answer to the wistful question mark left at the end of the previous episode....

4.6 The Good Samaritan What does all that have to do with Agents Of SHIELD, you ask? Well, this week, fans are treated to the origin of the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider. We knew this was coming, but the origin goes to some pretty unexpected places. There’s a ton going on this week other than the origin as well, so let’s take a deep dive.
