Review Arma Armed Assault

For those of you who weren’t those three people, Flashpoint was, in some minds, the war game to end all wargames. An FPS where you played a soldier, not a super soldier. Bullets hurt, your enemy was cunning and accurate. You needed to use tactics, terrain and vehicles to their full extent just to stay alive long enough to take one shot. Now, after after letting the O:FP community stew in its collective juices for seven years, comes ArmA:Armed Assault, The ‘spiritual succesor’ to Flashpoint....

Review Lost Season 3 Finale

The first series of Lost, infamously, ended with a pretty terrible lame duck double episode, which featured an hour or so of pondering simply to find a ladder. Series two? Much better. Action, a hint that people knew how all this would end, and a few answers in amongst the myriad of questions. I’ve got so many problems with the way that season three stuttered to an end that it’s hard to know where to start....

Rings Review

It’s nearly 20 years since Sadako first started menacing screens of varying sizes in the original Ring, Hideo Nakata’s collision of traditional Japanese ghost tale and modern urban culture. It was a film that kicked off a western interest in all things J-horror, spawned a series of Japanese prequels and sequels, and an inevitable American remake, directed by Gore Verbinski in 2002. The Ring then got a sequel in 2005, and now we have Rings – an attempt to rethink the franchise’s VHS-based terrors for a digital age of massive flat-screen tellies and smartphones....

Rise Of The Guardians Review

The setup is straightforward enough. The Guardians of the film’s title are the united force of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy (each suitably stylised). Faced with the impending threat of The Boogeyman and his desire to fill the dreams of the planet’s young with nightmares, they find themselves with a new recruit, in the shape of Jack Frost. And, from there, comes together a battle between good and evil, which ultimately rests on the belief of children, or otherwise....

Safe Review

Now, I’ve used many superlatives to describe the films of our man Statham over the years, but ‘magical’ isn’t a logical fit. Regardless, by the time Safe had finished, I was running high on adrenaline and in a state of absolute joy, filled with nothing but enthusiasm for a film which easily ranks as one of Statham’s best to date. Once the film’s second act kicks in, so does Statham, as the film ramps up into the kind of non-stop action-fest that dreams are made of....

Scandal An Innocent Man Review

After Jake was introduced onto the show, I thought it would be a nice break from the Fitz and Liv saga. However, now Jake is just thrown into the middle of their insufferable whirlwind romance, fighting for her even though he knows he can’t win, which he admits at the end of tonight’s episode. Ultimately, when Fitz finally lets Olivia go to see Jake, he tells her he knows she won’t choose him, but that it’s ok....

Sea Of Thieves Impressions Rare S New Game Feels Empty

Sea of Thieves is the once legendary developer’s latest attempt at recapturing its former glory, a game that’s supposed to mix the old innovative spirit of Rare with modern graphics and gameplay. And while there are flashes of brilliance (and what the company once was) in Sea of Thieves, the closed beta ultimately left me wanting much more than what I suspect will be in the final product. In a lot of co-op games, losing members of your party to other activities is no big deal, but in Sea of Thieves, it seriously handicaps the fun....

Season Of The Witch Review

Consequently, I’ve been waiting for Season Of The Witch ever since I first heard about it, especially as it chose to combine two of my favourite things: the fantasy genre and one Nicolas Cage. However, with the inventively fun Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the superb Kick Ass and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans all appearing last year, the time has never been better to join the Cult of Cage....

Shelter Review

The radiant Julianne Moore plays Cara Jessop, a widowed psychologist whose years of experience with patients have left her cynical and close-minded. As the film starts, we see her declare that a serial killer on death row was of sound mind when he committed his crimes, because multiple personality disorder does not actually exist. The said killer is summarily executed. Cara is confounded by Adam, to the extent that she begins to consider the impossible, the involvement of “Satan-worshipping mountain witches”....

Spooks Series 9 Episode 4 Review

Maybe this will all lead to a big pay-off, but at the moment having bad guys from various hot spots from around the world just isn’t gelling in the way the other series have. Maybe I miss Roz, maybe the writers are going for a more of a Celebrity Juice market of quick punchy disposable episodes rather than a overall arcing story. But some things just don’t seem to be clicking as they should....

Stan Against Evil Season 2 Episode 3 Review Curse Of The Werepony

Stan Against Evil Season 2 Episode 3 “I’m not gonna kill you, but the pony? The pony needs blood!” Evie Barrett gets to once more experience the burdens of everyday life now that she’s been rightfully restored to the timeline. Her problems at home begin to seep into her work when her cavalier ex-husband, Kenny (played with gleeful misanthropy by David Koechner), buys their daughter a pony and saddles Evie with all of the responsibility....

Star Wars It S Not Surprising Han Solo Is A Bad Dad

While Han certainly struggled with Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin in the old canon Legends timeline – only one of his kids were still standing by the time Disney wiped the slate clean – things only got worse for him in The Force Awakens. Not only had Ben Solo turned to the dark side and become the murderous Kylo Ren, but Han’s life came to a surprising end when his son stabbed him with a lightsaber and threw him off a bridge, the scoundrel tumbling into the abyss of Starkiller Base....

Star Wars Rian Johnson Scrapped J J Abrams Episode Viii Script

Ridley revealed to Geek Le Mag that J.J. Abrams, who directed and co-wrote The Force Awakens, also wrote scripts for Episode VIII and IX before Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow jumped in to direct the sequels. Exactly how much of the Sequel Trilogy was outlined in the early days of development by Abrams and the Lucasfilm Story Group remains a bit hazy, but we do know that Abrams and Johnson collaborated when it came to bridging the gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi....

Star Wars Rebels Empire Day Review

Like “Out of Darkness,” “Empire Day” is another good example of an ensemble episode, where every member of the Rebels team has their job to do. It could have benefitted from a similar dynamic between the Imperial antagonists, almost all of whom appear in “Empire Day” but hardly interact. It’s also the kind of serial episode that fans of The Clone Wars have been looking for, and gives just enough of a hint at Ezra’s backstory to make viewers curious....

Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 5 Review Dewey Wins

Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 5 Steven Universe is finally back! It felt like an eternity, didn’t it? It actually makes me really glad Cartoon Network is releasing a whole batch of new episodes after this long of a hiatus. Can you imagine if they only released one? Sunshine On Leith Review

Until something like that comes along, it feels like it’s becoming increasingly easy to sneer at feel-good musicals. In my humble opinion, feel-good often pans out better than your average feel-bad musical movie, (Repo! The Genetic Opera) and it’s especially better than a frankly-feel-embarrassed-about-the-whole-thing musical (Rock Of Ages). The story, such as it is, follows two Scottish squaddies, Davey (George Mackay) and Allie, (Kevin Guthrie) returning home from service in Afghanistan after one of their mates is killed by a roadside bomb....

Supergirl Season 3 The Next Evolution Of Mon El

One of the biggest mysteries of Supergirl Season 3 involves the fate of Mon-El whose escape pod vanished into a wormhole as he left Earth to avoid an agonizing death by lead poisoning. There was little doubt that Mon-El would return this season, and with Chris Wood present in the press rooms at San Diego Comic-Con, it’s pretty clear he’ll be around, even though there aren’t any new details about it....

Supernatural Hibbing 911 Review

We are quickly introduced to Donna’s ex-husband, who constantly fat shames and humiliates her. It was an unnecessary subplot, if it can even be called that, but it gave layers to Donna’s character. Her interaction with her ex-husband Sheriff Douchebag and how she dealt with the woman at the coroner’s office showed she was more than the happy go lucky lady cop. She had dark layers to her persona; a past that hurt, and a delightfully manipulative side that gets her where she needs to be....

Supernatural Season 13 Episode 21 Review Beat The Devil

Supernatural Season 13 Episode 21 The Winchesters, Castiel, Gabriel and Rowena team up to create the portal spell again, only to realize they need more archangel grace to keep the doorway open. In an episode that easily could have been a two-parter, both for the tricking of Lucifer and the journey to Mary, we get what is easily my favorite episode of the season. What helped the jokes land for the more visual humor were the music cues....

Supernatural Season 6 Episode 13 Review Unforgiven

6.13 Unforgiven This is the set for what’s arguably one of the best episodes this season. The telling of the story using Sam’s memories works really well. The flashbacks being in black and white is enough to get the point across that we are seeing past events, but the extra flourish of the skipping frames add to the unsettling atmosphere of Sam being uncomfortable with the memories and, more importantly, not liking who he was without a soul....
