3.12 Clear Low on guns, low on ammo, low on food, and low on ideas, Rick decided to go on a supply run and thought that it might be nice to pay a visit to his old home town, where there’s a gun locker with his name on it. However, revisiting the olden days is rarely a good idea, and when significant blocks of downtown have been turned into barricades, booby traps, and various other manglers with spray-painted words of warning on them, all of which imply bad things for those too stupid to turn back, well… Rick has to proceed anyway, while Carl and Michonne get a little bonding time....

6.10 The Next World Traditionally, The Walking Dead hasn’t had this kind of relaxation. You might get a few chuckles during an episode from an Abraham one-liner or something, but rarely does The Walking Dead attempt to be funny. Typically, the show takes a break by digging into some kind of personal drama, taking the foot off the gas in lieu of relaxing with some character humour, but this week’s episode actually has some fairly funny moments from a character that I don’t know that we’ve ever seen really crack a joke....

Any retelling of a much-told story needs to justify its existence by answering ‘Why this again, and why now?’ Episode one of The Woman In White did that with spirit. Head tilted to one side and hand on hip, it widened its eyes and said, ‘A story about women being ill-used by men of status. Why now? Girl, please.’ Episode two gave a further answer: to bring us the joy of Jessie Buckley as Marian Halcombe....

That’s right, the side-family from Knocked Up is back and taking center stage in This Is 40, the new ensemble comedy from Mr Comedy himself, Judd Apatow. They’re surrounded by a unique cast of characters, both returnees from Knocked Up (Jason Segel as Jason the personal trainer, Charlane Yi as Jodi) and new folks, but the family problems keep taking center stage, especially once Paul’s father Larry (Albert Brooks) and Debbie’s father Oliver (John Lithgow) show up....

This Is England ’86 is not that series. Although not unchanged after jumping mediums, the first episode is less the shameless addendum of Teen Wolf: The Series and its ilk and more the atmosphere of the City Of God televisual follow-up, City Of Men. The predecessors of both were hard-hitting, violent coming-of-age dramas that told the story of young boy’s falling in with a bad crowd in the midst of a very particular place and time, whereas their respective series offer a more leisurely, soap opera-type narrative that allows for a naïveté and moments of comedy that would have seemed alien in their counterparts....

For the penultimate episode of Miracle Day, writing duties have been handed to Torchwood veteran John Fay. And he’s got a lot of work on his plate, too. This is an episode, after all, where lots of characters spend most of the time talking to each other, trying to tease information out of one another in attempt to get to the bottom of the collection of mysteries that have been offered up....

Will Smith is knocking them out at a fair old pace right now. Hot on the heels of so-so action-horror fare I Am Legend, here’s his latest effort for box office glory, superhero flick Hancock. Putting a new spin on the hero fable, this sees Smith playing one that’s also a total bum, causing damage and destruction wherever he goes. Half the trailer wisely focuses on his bungled efforts to save the world and stop crime (including an encounter with a whale) and it looks very funny....

Back after a week’s Independence Day break, the glorious True Blood returned with the intriguing 9 Crimes, in which the plot thickened dramatically. The Magister is, of course, notified, and he pays a brutal visit to Fangtasia. Pam manages to warn Eric (he’s busy saving new BFF Lafayette’s ass), but he can’t resist doing (almost) the right thing. Swooping back to the club, the Sheriff claims Bill is the mastermind behind the V operation, and the ever-generous Magister gives New Eric two days to find Bill and save Pam’s life....

4.11 Soul Of Fire Those of use that spent much of the episode wondering why the wiccan/vamp standoff came to what felt like a premature end got our answer in the episode’s closing moments: ding dong, the witch is dead, and possessing a fully shocked Lafayette. He really needs to come up with some sort of locking system for the vessel that is his body. Yes, despite the hail of bullets, Marnie dies to fight another day, thus revealing that the real showdown – Laf against Jesus – is still to come....

In this episode, the series’ love stories take center stage. Characters struggle to choose between what their hearts want and what their minds tell them to do. There are no physical battles, large or small. (For the episode’s requisite glimpse of gore, we see a bit of surgery.) The warriors Rogers and Simcoe don’t appear at all, and Brewster pops in for only a second. There are no feats of espionage....

Turn Season 3 Episode 10 At the end of the previous episode of Turn: Washington’s Spies, both Maj. John André (JJ Feild) and Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell) were in enemy custody, caught in the act of conspiring against their Revolutionary War enemies while in civilian clothing. The opening scene of the show’s season finale gives us one more reminder of the punishment for that crime: it depicts the hanging of Nathan Hale in October 1776....

3.10 Laura Is The One Considering it’s always been a prominent feature of Twin Peaks to explore the depths of pure evil, it’s impressive that Richard Horne is currently unquestionably the series’ most abhorrent character. When he was introduced to us, he was threatening to rape a girl and not long after that he mowed down a child in his car. We know what he’s capable of so anytime he’s on screen, there’s the potential for unadulterated cruelty....

This is the helpful voice over narration brought to us by Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch), who is a dhampir guardian to Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), the last of the Dragomir family, heir to the royal throne of the Moroi, and Rose’s best friend and classmate at St. Vladimir’s, dismissively referred to as Vampire Academy by several students throughout the film. This is where Moroi learn to control their magic powers (oh, I forgot, they’re magic) and where Dhampir learn how to fight and kill Strigoi....

Vikings Season 4 Episode 8 To say that the winds of change are upon us would be a grave understatement as last night’s episode, “Portage,” plants the seeds for drastic political upheaval among three kingdoms. Clearly, the episode’s title refers to Ragnar’s latest plan to snatch victory from the hands of defeat, but it’s the cunning betrayals in Wessex, Frankia, and Kattegat that leap to the forefront. Telling Bjorn to stop the boats and make camp makes us think that Ragnar is simply buying time before plotting his next move, if in fact he has a move left....

The antithesis of the other pop music heavy hitter that took a bow at the Toronto International Film Festival, A Star is Born, the Portman-led Vox Lux is blanketed in the kind of pitch black nihilism that remains evermore elusive in cinema. As an experience likely too twisted for Academy Award voters, it makes a striking contrast with the Lady Gaga film that reinvents Hollywood’s favorite industry fairy tale into an elegiac romance about self-discovery in the music industry....

It seems that there’s a running joke amongst the…let’s go with “lovable” hardcore Nintendo fanbase involving an N64 game called Waluigi’s Taco Stand. This game never actually existed, but the joke that Nintendo has hidden its existence from the public has been making the rounds for over a decade now. Well, YouTuber and ROM hacker Kaze Emanuar has decided to take the joke a step further by posting the video you see above....

Prestige drama television is becoming a small world. Jon Hamm is guest-narrating on this season of FX’s Legion; Ann Down departed from The Leftovers to The Handmaid’s Tale; the entire cast of The Wire has filled out the IMDb pages of many other critically-acclaimed shows; and now on Sunday’s episode of Westworld, “Reunion,” television got one of its biggest crossovers yet. Esposito spoke to The Hollywood Reporter this week to explain how this all came about....

I’m here to tell you it’s passé to dislike the prequels and the Clone Wars cartoons and the great Bearded One. It’s cool again to like Star Wars (though the really cool kids never stopped and never chose between trilogies). But instead of Ewoks or Droids, we have Clone Wars. And it’s something we should be thankful for. I mean, let’s be honest, as awesome as it was to see a hundred Jedi flare up their lightsabers around the arena on Geonosis and tear the place apart with the aid of the mysteriously acquired Clone Army, it was simply the spark that started an intense, explosive conflict....
