But female coming-of-age stories are harder to come by, in some part because Hollywood has always been a bit shy about showing female sexuality in any way that doesn’t fit the established status quo. Diary Of A Teenage Girl, then, is a bit of an anomaly. Adapted from the graphic novel, Diary Of A Teenage Girl: An Account In Words And Pictures written by Phoebe Gloeckner, and directed by Marielle Heller, it’s a film that doesn’t shy away from the ugly parts....
Following sluggishly on the heels of a promising-but-not-without-its-problems 2010 pilot comes episode one of the BBC’s three-part comedy Dirk Gently, based on (but tellingly not adapted from) the novels by Douglas Adams. The bad news? Whether you keep the source material in mind or treat it as an original venture, it still doesn’t quite work. Fingers crossed that the coming episodes settle into their groove, but on the basis of this opener, Svlad Cjelli was better off left dealing with electric monks and Norse Gods between the covers of a book....
My favourite of the run so far, this one. I’ll get that said right at the start. The set-up this time is Bill moving into a student house with her friends, with them basically finding themselves unable to afford the bunch of cupboards-masquerading-as-flats that they’re shown. As with each episode this run, it takes its time setting things up (again, no dashing out of the gate here), and we get a flavour of the guest characters....
From unnoticed stunt man, to handsome leading man, Vic Edwards (Burt Reynolds) has spent the majority of his life as an idol of young men and lover to many Hollywood starlets. Those times are long gone, though. His present life is spent lunching with his only friend (Chevy Chase) and ogling groups of women partaking in outdoor yoga sessions. When a letter arrives from a Nashville Film Festival set to honor Vic’s achievements, he is quick to dismiss it....
Having given this show a complete pasting on occasion, I’ve accepted that for the most part season two of Dollhouse has been quite entertaining and even thrilling on occasions. In this he returns to being Anthony, an ex-soldier who fought in Afghanistan. But very soon he’s abducted by some of his old service buddies, and becomes part of a Rossum-inspired neural-connected army. It’s then up to Echo to extract him with the help of Sierra (who is actually Priya, at this point)....
Dragon Ball Super Episode 15 Dragon Ball Super this week is essentially a huge wish fulfillment episode for Hercule Satan. It’s not the first time the show has pulled off such a move. He’s practically the Earth’s de facto deus ex machina for explaining the many times the Earth has avoided annihilation. Mr. Satan showboating works towards the necessary cool off period after the show’s first arc wraps up. As much as viewers might be anxious for more fighting and new enemies, this episode helps set the table for what’s to come....
DuckTales Episode 4 Is Webby the main POV character for the new DuckTales? I only wonder because in the four episodes that have aired she’s had a big part in all of them. I know part of that is due to the fact an early Huey centric episode was bumped to later in the run but I’m 100% fine with it. Much like in episode two Webby’s awkwardness is painfully real, although this time around she’s left to form a new relationship all alone....
Moon tells the story of Sam Bell, played brilliantly by the almost solitary Sam Rockwell, an astronaut who has been commissioned by a corporation to monitor machines which harness the energy held within rocks on the surface of the moon for fuel. For almost three years, Sam has been on the moon separated from Earth by constant satellite malfunctions, his only contact via recorded video bounced back off a satellite too far for a live feed to be sent....
And hey, as you’re reading Den Of Geek, odds are you could be one of these people. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d seen this film before to begin with, but the setup is skilfully done. It achieves the familiar, lays foundations for all the characters, and then subverts expectation. The naturalistic conversations establish the types for the inevitable descent into chaos, but when it comes it’s not in the form of a psychopath with a grudge and access to pointy stuff....
It certainly seemed like Molly was headed for Harmon Kryger territory for a while there. After a harrowingly authentic dream sequence in which details of the conspiracy mixed with flashes of the accident with Marcus, Molly is left in a ravine with Ethan, just in time for John and the rescue team to come across their inert forms. Now, I’m not a big fan of dream sequences, but I enjoyed the touch of the refrigerator magnets switching from “Earth is Awesome” in the dream to “Ethan is Awesome” when she gets a drink for Ethan later....
Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 2 While it’s very easy to describe this season of Fear the Walking Dead as The Walking Dead on water, I’d like to think there’s more keeping FTWD afloat than its watery locale. I’d also like to believe that viewers are tuning in not just because TWD has wrapped until October, but because we have some pretty interesting characters in Travis, Madison, Strand, and the rest....
The environment into which Wonder Woman was released was, to put it mildly, a bit uneasy. The DC Extended Universe had received a mixed response to Batman Vs Superman and a generally negative response to Suicide Squad (although neither of the box office figures for those films reflects that). Gal Gadot was a relative unknown to the vast majority of movie goers and Patty Jenkins previous feature film as director was Monster, released 14 years prior....
The film takes place at Roosevelt High School, an inner city school where budget cuts have left the entire faculty fearing for their jobs, and also fearing the students’ designated Senior Pranks Day on the last day of term. As English teacher Mr. Campbell (Day) observes, the pranks don’t really seem like pranks – mostly, they involve criminal damage and horse-kidnapping. History teacher Mr. Strickland (Cube) is having none of it and early on in a stressful day, he loses his temper in the classroom....
I’ve just finished watching episode eight of FlashForward and I can say without fear of contradiction that this was the worst story yet. Actually, there wasn’t a story here, just a series of unconnected scenes that painfully rehashed stuff that’s already been resolved, reworked tedious character profiles and failed to progress the larger story arc in any meaningful way. It represents 42 minutes of my life I’ll never get back, and the people behind this show deserve to ring everyone who saw it and apologise in person....
FLCL Progressive Episode 1 It’s not easy to talk about FLCL. The very first episode of the original FLCL pulled me in, smacked me around, and made me feel a bunch of stuff I didn’t understand, but I knew I’d be watching the rest. After finishing “RE: Start,” the premiere of the series’ sequel, FLCL Progressive, my initial reaction was that it didn’t grip me. It didn’t strike with the same force and command my attention like the old series did....

With Moneyball, Miller managed to turn a story about statistics in baseball into one of the most absorbing dramas of 2011. In the case of Foxcatcher, he turns another true story – one which many will likely be familiar with before entering the theatre – into a pressure cooker of dramatic tension....
The strength of any TV drama is to resonate in the mind of the viewer, like someone struck a tuning fork and then placed it on your skull. For me, the season two finale of Fringe did exactly that, as it posed more questions than it set out to answer. The biggest unanswered one for me was if ‘Altivia’ switched places with Olivia and infiltrated our universe, then how did she open the portal, if she wasn’t the real deal?...
4.1 Neither Here Nor There This is a peculiar introduction to the team for him, because in the original timeline, the one before Peter didn’t exist, they’d already met. Having them meet again under entirely different circumstances for the first time feels a little like a repeat, even if the details are different. The trouble with these incongruities is that if you’re not an avoid watcher of the show, you’re going to be utterly confused, if you’re not already....
Despite the obvious allusion to popular beat combo The Beatles, there’s little (if anything) pertaining to I Am The Walrus in the latest episode of Futurama. Sadly, it doesn’t contain much of the originality contained in the John Lennon tune, either. As a sidenote, the feel of this is very similar to The Simpsons episode, Bart The Mother, where Bart also looked after an egg, only for it to hatch into a lizard....
I can’t watch those adverts and think my life’s problems will be solved with a gastric bellyache of pudding and excess. It isn’t going to be solved with oversized pyjamas with kittens on them. Or by drinking the smorgasbord of unholy beverages that manifest as actual Christmas spirit (chocolate liqueur anyone?). Yeah, there’s the Doctor Who Christmas special but I’m usually too far gone in wine by air time to do much more than sing Fairytale Of New York while doing the washing up in pink rubber gloves....
