Resurrection Old Scars Review

This week’s episode of Resurrection begins with a lynch mob—clichéd flaming torches, a noose and all—chasing a disheveled, leg-braced man through the woods in what seems to be the early 20th century Arcadia. The mob is led by a braided teenage girl, dressed in white, who seems to relish what she presumes to be “justice” as the leg-braced man is hanged until dead. (Last episode, one set of the skeletons found in the river featured right leg damage; the hanged man in “Old Scars” has a brace on his right leg, and was a Langston factory worker....

Resurrection Schemes Of The Devil Review

Before I hand out gold stars, let’s be a little constructive. At times, Resurrection can feel as lifeless as little Jacob Langston is supposed to be, and sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint as to why that is, but I think I might have figured it out tonight. Many of the best shows on television at the moment have very distinct, impressionable settings. True Detective made the bayou a character, D....

Resurrection Season Premiere Review Revelation

When Desperate Housewives closed their curtains in May of 2012, ABC’s Sunday night broadcast future was murky. After a slew of cancelled shows in 2013, ABC’s 2014 was an important one. Along with NBC’s The Blacklist, Resurrection was the only freshman series to make the Demo Top Ten List for the 2013-2014 TV Season. It was also the 11th highest-watched primetime show on television with 12.96 million viewers averaged per week, which is no small feat considering it plays opposite NBC’s Sunday Night Football — the reigning primetime juggernaut at 21....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Symbiosis

1.22 Symbiosis Naturally, when faced with such confusion, there’s only one option, and that’s to give everyone a timeout and wait for a solution to present itself. After a brief friendly chat, everyone catches up on the backstory: the two factions represent the Ornarans and the Brekkans, a pair of civilisations found on opposing planets. Each claims ownership of the contents of the barrel, which turns out to be “Felicium” – the only cure for a deadly plague wracking the Ornaran civilisation....

Ripper Street Series 5 Episode 1 Review Closed Casket

This review contains spoilers. The fifth and final series of Ripper Street starts a mere three days after the final events of the fourth series, opening with the funeral of Bennett Drake. Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), Jackson (Adam Rothenberg), and Susan (MyAnna Buring) remain hidden in the sewers, still reeling from Drake’s death at the hands of the feral Nathaniel (Jonas Armstrong). Nathaniel’s brother, Augustus Dove (Killian Scott) sets about covering up his own actions as well as his sibling’s....

Robin Ince Interview

What got you into comedy? You know on exercise books metal fans would write ‘Iron Maiden’ and do all different kinds of designs? I used to put all the different designs of the early episodes of The Comic Strip Presents… on, like War and Five Go Mad In Dorset and it wasn’t long after that when I was about 14 years old that I started going to some of the comedy clubs in London and just watching....

Scorpion Plutonium Is Forever Review

With an episode with a title as outlandish as “Plutonium is Forever,” you’d hope that this might be Scorpion’s most fun episode yet, with this either veering into Bond-ish territory or just some dangerously radioactive fun, both of which would have potential. Rather, the episode starts with what looks like this random derelict, Mark Collins, may be about to stumble upon Frank Winters and those incorrigible nuclear scamps from Manhattan, but the prospect of this being a bizarre crossover event is quickly quelled when the man demands that he wants to speak to Walter O’Brien, right after he’s surrounded by military....

Septic Man Review

Septic Man opens in a bathroom. Not just any bathroom. This toilet makes the one in Trainspotting look like the loo at The Palace hotel. There’s a woman, worse for wear, she’s, well, covered in sores and gore and all sorts of bodily fluids and there’s more of them coming out of both ends. I put more ketchup on my burger and turned the sound up. The producers didn’t skimp on gross....

Sherlock Series 2 Episode 3 The Reichenbach Fall Review

This review contains spoilers. “Nobody could be that clever”. Well, one person could, as it turns out. One person could be clever enough to walk away without a scratch after publicly jumping to his death. One person could be clever enough to deduce the flaw in Moriarty’s far-reaching plan. One person could be both clever enough and decent enough to allow his reputation to be sacrificed to save his friends’ lives: Sherlock Holmes, the best and the wisest man Watson’s ever known....

Smackdown Delivers One Great And One Awful Promo

Let’s start with the good, because I’m in a good mood. Rene Young sat down with American Alpha (former?) member Chad Gable, who watched with the rest of us on Monday’s Raw as his tag team partner, Jason Jordan, was revealed to be Kurt Angle’s son. Gable was perfect in this interview, hitting some key points. He was open, honest but also completely genuine. You sympathized with him, when he said Jordan didn’t tell him ahead of time....

South Park Season 1 Episode 3 Review

Our four protagonists, Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny, are going hunting with Stan’s uncle Jimbo and his vocally-afflicted, Vietnam War hero buddy, Ned. The idea is for Stan and his uncle to enjoy some typical male bonding, while shooting deers, rabbits, badgers and all sorts of other harmless creatures. But, as Jimbo tells us, it’s okay to kill whatever you like, so long as you shout “It’s coming right for us!...

South Park Season 21 Episode 5 Review Hummels Heroin

South Park Season 21 Episode 5 Where the hell is Towlie this week? Seriously, how can you have an episode about getting high without a towel? The episode was less of a trip and more of a mellow high. I’ve written time and time again that South Park feels disjointed when they squish three plots into 22 minutes or mix and match elements of current events, better known as the “manatee approach,” which was their own joke at the expense of Family Guy....

Spartacus Vengeance Episode 3 Review The Greater Good

This review contains spoilers. After a pair of well-written but very slow-paced opening episodes, Spartacus: Vengeance finally feels like a series that has found its feet, finally delivering the same urgency and passion that made its predecessors so gripping. The focus on Crixus certainly helped, as his relationship with Naevia was one of the series’ more believable and thus deserves the prestigious, plot-driving position it has been afforded. For that reason, it’s a shame that Naevia was re-cast, but let’s face it: the series has dealt with bigger problems than that....

Spoiler Filled Look At Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1

The past week hasn’t exactly seen a vacuum of opinion on the successes and failures of the new Harry Potter film. Reviewers have been wagging their fingers at saggy pacing, whilst oohing and aahing over a selection of stunning sequences. Cinemagoers have found the amputated plot both a frustration and a blessed relief. We must have heard every possible variation as to whether one, some, or none of its three young leads can actually act yet....

Star Trek The Original Series Episode 9 Review

The ninth episode of The Original Series, Dagger Of The Mind, is pivotal in Trek history, because this is the one where Spock first uses the ancient Vulcan ritual of mind melding on a human, but actually it’s also an interesting story on a number of levels. This whole concept works because of the two actors they got to play Gelder and Adams. Morgan Woodward who plays Gelder is entirely bonkers, to the point where I’d be concerned to be alone with the actor, never mind the character he plays....

Star Trek The Original Series Episodes 11 12 Review

There is only one two part episode in the entire original series of Star Trek, and The Menagerie was created from parts of the original Cage pilot with Jeffrey Hunter playing the Enterprise’s previous leader, Captain Pike. The events we see from this production are presented as being 13 years prior to the Kirk era, suggesting that Mr. Spock has been on this starship for some considerable time. The mystery deepens further when Spock fabricates coded commands and effectively steels the Enterprise to head to an off-limits planet, Talos IV....

Star Trek The Motion Picture Blu Ray Review

Every geek worth his salt knows the history of Star Trek The Motion Picture. The original series got cancelled, everyone complained, they brought it back then cancelled it again, everyone complained again, they tried to bring it back with Star Trek: Phase II, and then Star Wars came along and Starfleet’s finest crew found themselves up on the big screen, hence the extreme makeup choices and Leonard Nimoy’s sudden investment in Max Factor products....

Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 3 Episode 2 Review Arc Troopers

It’s fitting that these two episodes have been slotted together, as they deal with some of the Clones from the previous story and it’s set on Kamino. Again, the watery planet is beautifully realised here and the animators go to work in a big way. As the action is split in three – the Clones facing off with droids, Anakin sabering it up with Ventress, and Grievous fighting with Kenobi – the climatic tension really does make the episode feel like a season finale....

Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 3 Episode 9 Review Hunt For Ziro

“Love comes in all shapes and sizes” reads the opening quote from the latest installment of the Star Wars spin-off. But the love from aficionados in this particular tale is undoubtedly engendered by the appearance of fan favourite, Quinlan Vos. And now, here he is doing his thing – generally pissing off Obi Wan (though, in truth, not too difficult, this being his ‘square’ years before he became a cool hermit)....

Supernatural Season 9 Episode 4 Review Slumber Party

9.4 Slumber Party Slumber Party sees the return of Charlie Bradbury, a fan favorite since her introduction on the show (and who doesn’t like Felicia Day?). She always brightens up the show with her geekiness and the quirkiness of her episodes, and Robbie Thompson, who has so far written all of her appearances, really gets her – and us viewers. He’s always managed to use her character to great effect in order to offer clever new episodes that break outside the mold of standard ‘Monster of the Week’ episodes – and standard TV plots, really....
