Battlestar Galactica Razor Review

That’s what this look back at life aboard the ship is supposed to deal with. But it also has added problem that as this story fits into a universe we have already seen, we know that there aren’t going to be big fat surprises. We know who is going to die. Even characters who we have barely met before, like the Number Six we have previously seen held prisoner in series two, we can quickly fill in the blanks with our fan-brains as soon as they appear on screen (Cain’s a lesbian; Six is the ‘easy like Sunday morning’ model; Cain hates the Six by the time she turned up in series two....

Between Episode 6 Review War

1.6 War Somewhere in my review notes I wrote down a series of tropes that get rolled out when writers have either lost all interest or run out of actual ideas. To get one of them in a show isn’t good, two is really bad, but War managed to deliver no fewer than four of them! Those would be: But before we get to that, War starts where End Of The Rope ended, with Adam and his father....

Billions Episode 2 Review Naming Rights

1.2 Naming Rights And let’s not be prudes here. Nobody minds some good N. Nudity and sexuality can be fantastic when it’s either truly novel or just flat out gratuitous and stylized. In Billions’ defence, the previously unseen, unmentioned, unnamed character Tara Moore engaging in some varsity-level sex and drug acts with an equally-anonymous blonde is plenty gratuitous. What’s objectionable about it, however, is Billions‘ lame attempt to justify it later on....

Bitten Descent Review

Before we get to Creeper Guy, let’s back up a little bit to last episode: Logan and Rachel found out that they were expecting a little cub, er I mean, boy. Logan is visibly freaked, which is our first clue that things might not be “alright”. Then he got the nice little package of the silver rattle with a note attached, which said “It’s a boy!”… The problem here is that neither he nor Rachel had told anyone that they were expecting or found out the sex, much less what it was....

Blair Witch Review

And now the third Blair Witch film comes along, which may as well have Blair Witch 2 plastered on the poster, such is the non-existent shrift it gives to the staggeringly bad Blair Witch: Book Of Shadows. Aligning itself very closely to the tone and style of the first film – as well as picking up its narrative threads – this new Blair Witch shoots out of the gate at speed, before settling down, and doing the requisite introductions and establishing character dynamics (perhaps inevitably, the least interesting part of the film)....

Bodyguard Episode 3 Review

Last we saw them, Sgt Budd and Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for the Horn Department (alternatives: the bone secretary/Minister for Internal Affairs) were going at it following an assassination attempt that had set the blood pumping. Episode three greeted the pair nestled under the sheets, very much the honeymooning couple. By the end of the hour, as per the trajectory of an average honeymoon, she was half-dead and he was wearing a tracksuit....

Brawl In Cell Block 99 Review

Brawl In Cell Block 99 adds extra The Raid-style flavoring to the impact of said violence. And so impactful are those moments, that it’s only long after the credits roll that it hits you how little actual flat-out action there is. It’s just when it’s deployed, you utterly, utterly feel the impact of it. The center of the film is a Vaughn-again Vince Vaughn, here playing a man who never seems to get the cream of life by the name of Bradley Thomas....

Breaking Bad Finale Review Felina

5.16 Felina It’s been a source of tension worthy of the show itself: would Breaking Bad manage to tie-up the unmitigated tension and nigh-on flawless action-drama of the past five series in a way that would stay true to the characters and overall ‘vision’ of the show, while also not feeling like a terrible anti-climax in the wake of the insanity that preceded it? Well, I can only envisage two types of reactions to Felina, the Breaking Bad finale: 1) that was perfect, or 2) that was a little too perfect....

Broad City Season 4 Episode 7 Ilana’s mother, Bobbi, has to help her sister, Beverly (Drescher), clean out Grandma Esther’s apartment. Abbi and Ilana tag along for a short vacation and find themselves pulled into the “allure” of the laid back Sunshine State. When our two favorite ladies stumble on an apartment that’s for rent, they decide to take the leap and leave the grind of NYC in the dust. First, however, they must wine and dine the board of Darlington Lakes to get an apartment....

Californication Levon Review

“Everything that I write is either for her or about her,” Hank tells Atticus before leaving his job and his muse only to end up back at his truest love’s door. “I’m with her, even if I’m not.” Ask any guy that has an ounce of romance in him about how nothing you plan in your head unfolds exactly the way you want it to. In those moments before the knock you can’t prepare for someone’s reaction, you can only put it out there and hope....

Californication Season 6 Episode 3 Dead Rock Stars Review

Having Hank all coiled up in rehab can only entertain us for so long. He’s an animal that needs to be let loose, free to dangle his junk in the wind. Temporarily granted a field trip out of rehab, Hank escorts Faith to the funeral of her dead rock star lover and we expect him to get in all sorts of Rock and Roll related trouble. At this point it’s unclear as to where the Faith storyline will go....

Castle Season 8 Episode 22 Review Crossfire

8.22 Crossfire As I suggested last week, I’m not exactly surprised by this. The series finale doesn’t just conclude the show, but brings to end one of the most excruciating seasons ever of a show that I otherwise liked. It’s not that I haven’t always had my problems with Castle. I have. But I’ve been a fan of Nathan’s since his short stint on Buffy, where he played, the Gentlemen from Hush aside, the only truly frightening villain the show ever had....

Chozen Laced Review

Again, we continue to see send-ups of hip hop culture and its often ridiculous and mishandled appropriation by white people. Chozen’s camp analogy distracts the audience by being funny while perfectly encapsulating the situation and once again pointing out the white, middle class, suburban background which undermines his affected thug persona. This throughline, much like the gay jokes, are present enough to give the show its intended flavor without relying too heavily on them....

Community Season 2 Episode 2 Review Accounting For Lawyers

Back in class for the second episode of the new season, Community returns with Accounting For Lawyers, in which Jeff learns that he’s no longer a cold, unfeeling, reptile of a lawyer, Annie discovers a passion for chloroform and Senor Chang dances his little socks off. Bless. Centered around the twin themes of Jeff’s lawyerly past, and a breakdance competition based on Oktoberfest (Pop and Locktoberfest), Accounting for Lawyers has the usual life lesson – keep your friends close and your enemies in your debt – something Jeff probably didn’t need to re-learn, all thanks to a mini-caper, the campest breakdancing ever broadcast and the stunning revelation that Pierce doesn’t have very much hair....

Constantine The Darkness Beneath Review

Well, I guess this is going to turn into a supernatural procedural. OK, that could work, I suppose. Last week, we were introduced to Liv, a character that seemingly was supposed to be part of the story engine of the show. There was a sort of Doctor/Companion vibe between Liv and Constantine, which did give the whole thing a sort of been there done that feel. This week, we meet Zed, who is much more worldly when it comes to the realm of the supernatural....

Demolition Review

Demolition, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild), tells the story of a very individual grieving process. New York investment banker Davis has a perfectly respectable, normal life untila car accident rips his wife away from him. In the wake of the crash, Davis responds not with an outpouring of emotion but instead with quiet fixation. In a hospital corridor, still spattered with blood from the collision, Davis tries to buy a packet of M&Ms from a vending machine and is frustrated to see the candy stuck fast behind the glass....

Den Of Geek Meets Doctor Who The Recording Of Leviathan

Last year, Big Finish – the audio arm of ‘Classic’ Doctor Who that produce stories featuring Doctors Five through Eight – set themselves the task of finally recording this missing Season. Along the way they picked up a couple of other Colin Baker stories that had been considered during his tenure. One of these was Leviathan, seemingly scrapped due to budgetary restraints. Last month, we attended its recording. There is a, hopefully understandable, nervousness about entering Big Finish HQ in North West London....

Dexter S1 7 Review

So, anyway, we open on a crime scene, and a very stylish one, at that, all pink lights and pretty surroundings with a corpse right in the middle, and Dexter actually, you know, looks at the blood spatter and the knife wounds and realises… he’s seen this before. He knows who did it. That floppy-haired kid from episode 3, the one Dexter thought he could see himself in, has killed again....

Dexter Season 8 Episode 6 Review A Little Reflection

8.6 A Little Reflection But then, any episodic show is going to have a distinctly cyclical nature, and Dexter is no exception. A Little Reflection was in many respects a time-out of sorts, in which things are allowed to stabilise somewhat before they presumably go entirely to hell in the latter part of the season. To that end was the presentation of a potential replacement for Dexter in the youthful guise of Sam Underwood as Zach Hamilton, psycho teenager....
