Geeks Vs Loneliness Giving Up The Guilt

This week, we’re welcoming back the wonderful Jane Roberts, who wants to talk about guilt. Over to her… It may not have escaped your notice that we are in a new year. New resolutions, new focus, a brand new you – so proclaims the billboards, magazines, newspapers and television shows that unavoidably litter our lives. We can all work towards a ‘bikini body’, move to clean eating, squeeze another five minutes’ productivity from our day if only we observe and religiously follow these ten easy steps… Let’s be honest....

Geeks Vs Loneliness When Dreams Don T Work Out

Everyone has dreams. Like Princess Fiona in Shrek 2 writing ‘Mrs Fiona Charming’ over and over again, we often grow up dreaming of a happy future, perhaps involving a successful relationship, family, career, and good health. (Other dreams are available, of course – sporting success, writing a novel, playing in a band, becoming prime minister… and many, many more!) In my teens I longed to get married one day and I often felt despair that I would never achieve that dream – I didn’t feel I was good enough, compared to everyone else....

Get Hard Review

When a film comedy goes wrong, the one-liners drop like stones, the jokes sail wide of the mark, and time moves so slowly that it’s almost like being stuck in a bullet-time sequence from The Matrix. Get Hard slides gloomily into the latter category. It’s the kind of back-of-a-Spar receipt low concept that would struggle to fill a 25-minute sitcom episode, yet Etan Cohen (the Idiocracy and Tropic Thunder writer who makes his directorial debut here) attempts to extend it to an hour and 40 minutes....

Girls Incidentals Review

There are four major events taking place here: Adam has a reading for the Broadway show he got a callback for, Jessa’s old rehab buddy Jasper (Richard E. Grant) turns up to screw with her life, everything basically keeps on sucking for Marnie, and Hannah continues to enjoy success at her advertorial job with GQ. Adam lands his part and has a little celebratory freak-out in a public bathroom afterward, something which is pretty awesome to witness....

Gotham Prisoners Review

Gotham Season 2, Episode 16 Thematically, “Prisoners” is one of the most cohesive Gothamepisodes this season. It is a recommitment to the cause for both Jim and Oswald. For Jim, it is a recommitment to the anti-corruption heroic path. For Oswald, it is presumably a re-commitment to revenge and villainy. In Gordon’s case, though the character may have seriously lost his way, this show still seems to believe the city’s salvation lies in his bloody, incompetent hands....

Grimm Dyin On A Prayer Review

Faith, spirituality and hope mean different things to different people and species. Sarah, the wife in tonight’s “Dyin’ on a Prayer” episode, has lost faith that her abusive ex-husband will ever stop beating her and her son. Her rabbi brother, Ben, falls on the opposite side of the tangent. His religious and spiritual convictions are rooted in Hebrew text. He looks beyond the physical world for a viable solution to his sister’s problem....

Hemlock Grove Lost Generation Review

It would be reductive and borderline childish to say that getting two of its main characters into a threesome has made Hemlock Grove a better show but…getting two of its main characters into a threesome has made Hemlock Grove a better show. Of course, a lot of that has to do with the fact that since Roman and Peter are now physically in the same room as each other (and in practice: much closer than that) they now by default have to confront all the various mysteries that they were only dipping their toes into separately....

How The Elvis 68 Comeback Special Happened Despite Colonel Parker

Elvis lost ground to the British invasion, but even the Beatles would have been happy to play sidemen to him. Presley could have showed up at the Monterey Pop Festival and knocked out the crowd with nothing but a guitar and a microphone on a whim, but he was managed by Colonel Parker, a former carney performer. I don’t want to say the Colonel, who never made it past the rank of private when he served in the U....

I Love You Daddy Review

Shooting his new movie on black and white 35mm film, I Love You, Daddy enjoys a more cinematic look than his television series, but it still has the same type of humor C.K. brought to Louie and to his standup act. It’s quite an interesting contrast that works alarmingly well. Also in the mix is hot (and pregnant) actress Grace Cullen (Rose Byrne), who Glen thinks would be a great lead for his new show, but he then gets involved with her....

Identity Episode 5 Review

The last two episodes of Identity haven’t moved the premise on any further, and I’m getting the distinct feeling that all the eggs in this basket have been kept for the season finale next week. The idea, and I’m guessing here, is that we were meant to draw all sorts of meaningful parallels between this woman and Bloom, who appears to have lost all sense of logic. In an interview on ITV’s website, show runner Ed Whitmore explains that the episode was inspired by the case of an American freedom fighter who turned up 20 years after an arrest warrant for her was issued....

Den of Geek: How did you come to be involved in Kate Modern? GA: No, I didnt know they existed. I knew there was smaller stuff, as in virals, but I’d never heard of LonelyGirl15. Which is a shame, as it’s a great medium.DoG: The level of fan interaction (and speculation) is pretty high on Kate Modern and indeed LG15 – what’s that like for you? GA: It is pretty high, yeah....

Inhumans Episode 3 Review Divide And Conquer

Inhumans Episode 3 So here we are, the first episode of Marvel’s Inhumans that wasn’t shown during the theatrical release. Listen, I’m a huge Marvel fan. Intruders Time Has Come Today Review

This week Jack tucks his tail and (drinks and) drives back home to his wife. Or, as he is starting to realize, to the person who only appears to be his wife. She lashes out at Jack for potentially ruining her relationship with her boss by revealing that she was out shopping her resume around at competing firms....

Killjoys Hannah John Kamen On Heroes And Villains

Hannah John-Kamen has anchored Syfy’s Killjoys as the bounty hunter protagonist Dutch from the very start, but as she expands her role to include the villainous Aneela, the actor’s growing body of work starts to take on decidedly more evil tone. After showing up as prominent antagonists both in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, fans of Killjoys appreciate all the more the conflicted nature of both of the characters John-Kamen plays on the humble space drama, and we spoke to her about the gray areas her roles seem to inhabit....

Knight Rider The Last Review Episode 2

In the second of the series Michael goes undercover to find out the source of illegal military hardware smuggling to China by posing as a driver to Fast-and-Furious wannabes the Cheng Brothers. As a plot, this is pure Hoff-era Knight Rider fare, and an especially tacky excuse for driving fast. But let’s be brutal: this isn’t actually a TV show is it? Like the original one, it’s an extended advertisement, now for the Ford Mustang....

As tempting as undoubtedly is, I will be attempting to avoid using boxing terminology in these upcoming reviews as much as I possibly can. I feel that, as a serious piece of drama, Lights Out reviews should be equally serious in nature, and filling it with a never-ending stream of boxing puns would be below the belt. FX’s new boxing drama, Lights Out, arrives at a time when the network is enjoying a serious hit streak....

Limitless Review

Bradley Cooper plays Eddie Morra, a dishevelled, down-on-his-luck author suffering from an incurable case of writer’s block. He’s trying to finish writing his ambitious science fiction novel, but his publisher’s deadline is looming and he hasn’t written a word. Running out of time, behind on his rent, and on the brink of losing his girlfriend, it’s hardly surprising that he takes the mysterious clear pill offered to him by his shady brother-in-law, Vernon Gant (Johnny Whitworth)....

Lucifer Episode 1 Review Pilot

1.1 Pilot But let’s come back to that. The vampire Lestat once said ‘I don’t know anything of hell’, and in that respect he and Lucifer couldn’t have been more different. Lacking in job satisfaction and tired of the prospect of ruling over the damned denizens of the infernal realm for all eternity (which, it has to be said, is quite a long time), the Lightbringer divests himself of all responsibilities as the Lord of Hell and exiles himself to Earth, looking instead to have a little fun....
