Turn Season 3 Episode 5 Most of the latest episode of Turn: Washington’s Spies is directed toward setting up conflicts for later—unlike last week, when we saw some chapters come to a clear end. One recurring character dies in this episode, but he’s not a major role. The clearest sign that this show is merely Act One is how right after the opening credits we see Mary Woodhull (Meegan Warner), of all people, firing a musket, yet we don’t see that gun again near the end of the show....

Already greeted with much criticism before it was even released, The Thing was neither a critical nor financial hit when it scuttled into cinemas back into 2011. Although we won’t go into the relative merits of the film here (we’ve often said it’s not as a bad a movie as its 36 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes might suggest), we’ve often wondered what those originally shot practical effects would have looked like....

As you can imagine the scene, and the film, has no qualms about talking to its audience in this indirect but direct way, telling the viewer who remains sceptical about a modern-day interpretation of the concept that this will be its own thing. Yes, there’s a family, and they too are heading to Walley World in search of unity and reconnection, but rest assured that things will be different. Nothing particularly innovative is done with the premise, as Rusty realises over dinner with friends (featuring a short but notable appearance from Keegan-Michael Key) that his own family have been stuck in a rut, planning the titular holiday in order to recapture some of the same magic he experienced himself as a child....

The power of Van Helsing’s third episode “Stay Inside” resides in the burden each member of the core group carries as the outside world creeps closer, forcing them to make some difficult choices. This mid-season finale of Z-Nation was so good I basically turned into both Wayne and Garth, bowing down before my television wailing repeatedly that I was not worthy. It confused and upset my cats. But the dog seemed amused, so there’s that. I’m not usually a huge fan of flashbacks, but watching the crazy doctor in the past interspersed with the gang’s present adventures made for a great way to build suspense....

What I don’t love, however, is the pilot. I’d only seen the latter half of the first series last year in Canada, when all the kinks had been worked out of the casting hierarchy (less Jenna and Pete, more Tracy and Jack). The pilot wasn’t bad per se, but it also wasn’t great. The opener sees her buying up a stand’s-worth of hot dogs to stop queue jumpers from getting them, and then handing them out to passers-by to a soundtrack....

We spoke with Conover about the evolution of the series, what topics have surprised him the most so far, the risks and responsibilities that a program like this encounters, and what’s new in season two. DEN OF GEEK: First off, heading into this second season, did you have any sort of agenda in mind?...

The film begins with a montage set to the Four Tops, covering the Meyers family’s Christmases from the 1970s up to 2015. But entirely in keeping with 2016 so far, matriarch Grace (Rachel Kylian) has passed away and Christmas will be the first time that Walter has got his four grown-up children under one roof since they lost her. For this type of Christmas movie, an excess of characters usually leads to the story feeling episodic and tenuous, but at least when they’re all under one roof, as in last year’s Christmas With The Coopers, there’s some semblance of focus....

Almost Human is the buddy movie you never knew you desired, where the straight man is a flawed and nearly broken human cop and the comic relief is an Elton John singing android. The banter between John Kennex and Dorian is masterful as the two try to rescue a group of hostages in a skyscraper from a group of seemingly hi-tech militant terrorists. Make no mistake, it was Die Hard, all the way to the terrorist act masking a hi-tech robbery, but the genre bender worked with the relationship of Kennex and Dorian growing with each flight of stairs the unlikely duo climbed....

2.4 When Push Comes To Shove The scene is set with a flashback sequence where she pushes her father not to leave the family home, and you can guess then that the ramifications of this aren’t going to be good for anyone. In that respect this is a rather predictable fable about how the uncontrolled use of an Alpha power can have dark consequences, which isn’t much of a revelation....
