Humans Series 2 Episode 2 Review

This review contains spoilers. Way back at the beginning of the first series of Humans, I noted the cleverness of having the Synths as the sole technology that distinguishes this fictional world from our own. It reduces distraction, enhances the power of allegory and throws the programme’s multiplicity of philosophical questions into sharp relief. Naturally, this decision raises certain questions of plausibility, most striking of which is, why are all the AIs humanoid?...

Ice Age 4 Continental Drift Review

The film kicks off by playing the franchise’s ongoing trump card, Scrat the acorn-hunting squirrel. Scrat’s always been a highlight, and he is again here, with his adventures harking back to the likes of Chuck Jones’ and Fred Quimby’s Tom & Jerry shorts. When we first meet him here, his search for a nut takes him to the core of the Earth, and he puts into motion the events that cause, er, the continents of the planet to be formed....

In Fear Review

So it’s impressive that In Fear manages to put its leads in a believably helpless situation in spite of it all. Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert), a young almost-couple who met a couple of weeks ago, are on their way to a music festival together. As a romantic surprise, Tom books a hotel room for their first night, but the hotel turns out to be a little off the beaten track, and despite using the car’s built-in GPS and checking the map Tom had printed off the hotel website, they soon find themselves driving in circles....

Keith Lemon The Film Review

And it’s not just Kelly Brook, who’s seen here repeatedly hammering nails into her career, but the entire catalogue of Britain’s z-listers are present and correct, some coming off largely unscathed and others possibly sabotaging the little respect they still clung to. The cast ranges from Gary Barlow and Paddy McGuiness, to Peter Andre and Jedward. It’s like watching a ritual sacrifice, with celebrities selling their souls for a spot, any spot, on the big screen....

Kidding Episode 2 Review Pusillanimous

Kidding Episode 2 Just because Jeff Pickles’ vices don’t include smoking, adultery, or skullduggery doesn’t mean he’s some saint. He’s guilty of more than sneaking pulls of chocolate syrup; his entire attitude toward his ex-wife is entirely inappropriate. He’s unable to see that his aggressive attempts at keeping his family together is only alienating the people that he loves even further. Buying the house next door to Jill seems like a cheeky idea that will bring the family closer in Jeff’s mind....

Killjoys Season 3 Episode 3 Review The Hullen Have Eyes

Killjoys Season 3 Episode 3 “Let’s do some nerdy shit and save the day.” The wait is over, and the game is on. How long until Dutch and Aneela come face to face remains to be seen, but “The Hullen Have Eyes” makes one thing crystal clear – the two lookalikes have little in common and won’t rest until the other is dead. This week’s episode of Killjoys provides an incisive peek into Aneela’s world as she begins marshalling her forces for the impending war....

Krypton Episode 9 Review Hope

Krypton Episode 9 It’s a good thing the El name means “hope” because, after the arrival of Brainiac on Krypton, it’s pretty much all Team Seg has going for them. In what was a last-ditch attempt to defeat the Sentry/Voice of Rao, Kandor City lost most of its manpower when the Sentry/Voice of Rao got Black Zero and the Sagitari to turn on one another. It does make breaking through the seal keeping Doomsday tomb safely ensconced much easier....

Legends Of Tomorrow What S Next For Zari

Legends of Tomorrow is an unconventional superhero series known for its boundless energy and its assortment of quirky, misfit, b-list superheroes. But nobody tunes in to Legends expecting heavy hitters like the Justice League, instead, they keep coming back for the imaginative, reality-warping time travel scenarios and the chemistry of the cast. “It’s always weird, I think, to be the new kid,” Ashe tells Den of Geek. “Especially if you’re sort of an especially awkward person like myself....

Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 5 Review Return Of The Mack

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 5 A couple of times a season so far, Legends of Tomorrowhas to put away the jokes and dial back the melodrama to move the ball down the field. Usually they’re…elegant isn’t the right word, because you can’t really call an episode that has Heat Wave wearing his reading glasses while he rereads Stoker’s Draculawhile Commander Steel is strapped to a table humming “Return of the Mack” next to a glowing coffin....

Legion Season 2 Episode 9 Review Chapter 17

Legion Season 2 Episode 9 Be careful what you wish for. This could apply to several of the characters on Legion this week, but it also applies to myself. While I always admire Legion’s energy and oddities, I frequently admonish the show for skimping on character work. Beside the David-Syd-Future Syd love triangle and the drama it’s mining from that dynamic, Legion has left the rest of Division 3 mostly out in the wind, particularly Melanie Bird....

Lego Star Wars Review The Padawan Menace Review

And when I say event, I’m not exaggerating or dealing in extraneous hyperbole. This twenty minute or so slice of animated Star Wars action features a Bantha load of hilarity and memorable moments. It’s an absolute peach! You have to admit, the thought of C-3PO shouting, “Say hello to my metal friends!” as he blasts a Rancor, has your curiosity piqued. The little green one is babysitting some Padawans when he puts them on a tour of the Galactic Senate with everyone’s favourite droids C-3PO and R2-D2....

Led by Mark Wahlberg’s Marcus Luttrell, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster star as the SEALs, whose attempt to assassinate a Taliban leader from a vantage point on Sawtalo Sar mountain is thwarted by anti-Coalition forces. Louie Elevator Part 6 Review

What we didn’t get, unfortunately, was any real conclusion to Louie’s daughter Jane’s school troubles, which seemed to fall away as this miniseries went on. It’s become evident that the six parts of “Elevator” were really about Amia. Other characters from earlier in the series’ life, like Pamela and Dr. Bigelow (Charles Grodin) appeared during “Elevator” and the episode following this one continues more or less right where “Elevator Part 6” leaves off....

Loving Review

Just watching the trailer for Loving made me tear up, so I prepared myself for Terms Of Endearment level sobbing – but I was surprised that I didn’t need my ten pack of Kleenex. Nichols could have gone for overwrought performances and heaped on the sentimentality but the subtle and understated nature of the film reflects the Lovings’ relationship – they just wanted to live a quiet life together. Their small community accepted them (mostly); it was the state of Virginia that was trying to keep them apart....

Luther Series 4 Episode 1 Review

Eighteen months have passed since the BBC aired the last episode of Luther. The episode opens with scenes reminiscent of the third season. The premise is simple enough — a woman waits for her husband to come to their new home from work and she hears noises and creaks around the house. The influences from horror cinema are as evident here as they have been in previous series. It never feels tired or derivative, instead proving that when done well, such simple ideas can provide genuine chills....

Mad Men The Monolith Review

It’s almost as if they’re pushing Don to the same fate. He’s a relic of an old era, one not dominated by Jim Cutler and free of computers. It’s fitting that the office creative room in tonight’s episode is destroyed to house a new IBM computer. It’s a symbolic gesture that’s way more literal than this show usually delivers. You can interpret it as it lies on the surface, another example of the shifting times and how the old guard is becoming outdated and obsolete, but I prefer to think of the creative room being representative of Don, being removed for Lou Avery, a cold machine, but an effective tool....

Mad Men Season 4 Episode 12 Review Blowing Smoke

SCDP is a company in terminal meltdown. Its customers are seeping away, and its finances are at a dangerously low ebb. To make matters worse, the glimmer of hope given by Faye at the close of the last episode is immediately extinguished at the start of Blowing Smoke – in one of the most quietly stinging rejections in Mad Men history, a Don Draper is politely knocked back by prospective client, Heinz....

Mad Men Season 5 Episode 4 Review Mystery Date

This review contains spoilers. “You don’t have to worry about me” Don tells Megan in Mystery Date. After that little glimpse into your subconscious Don, I wouldn’t be so sure… A macabre fascination with the 1966 Chicago student nurse killings percolated throughout this gloriously dark episode of Mad Men, giving everybody something to worry about. The inclusion of big headline news always runs the risk of turning Mad Men into a Wikipedia stub instead of the poised, revealing drama it is at its best, but like season three’s treatment of the JFK assassination, Mystery Date parcelled out its real-world shock neatly, using the Chicago murders as a backdrop for its characters to reflect on their own fears and weaknesses....

Masters Of Sex One For The Money Two For The Show Review

It feels like everybody’s rushing this week, whether it’s to get a tie to Bill, or for Virginia to get a moment with her kids, or even Bill to get through this CBS experience, so Shep can posit their research above everyone else’s. Everybody is rushing, whether it’s because the finale is coming next week or otherwise, so it’s a little surprising that this episode lacks some impact, considering some of the stuff that goes down in it....
