He’s also a Doctor Who nerd, and in our last conversation, he thus excitedly turned his attention to the 17th century poet Andrew Marvell. Because he’s convinced that a poem Marvell wrote is being referenced, deliberately, by Steven Moffat in Doctor Who. But for the purposes of this chat, Tony homed in on a poem called To His Coy Mistress, a famous and oft-quoted piece of work, whose lines have now lent themselves to two Doctor Who episode titles....

6.5 The Rebel Flesh It feels like a while since we’ve had a relatively traditional old-style Doctor Who adventure. Given the strength of the ongoing serial elements of series 6 thus far, and the different way one of the two standalone episodes went, it feels a little bit odd to be arriving at part one of a brand new story of this ilk. And I suspect that many won’t like it for what it isn’t, especially coming hot on the heels of The Doctor’s Wife....

This fact does not deter Alex, who sinks every penny he has into the home to buy it, restore it to its original state, and hopefully get on the cover of Architectural Digest, and sell the house on for millions of dollars. Good luck in this economy. As it turns out, the house has a terrible infestation, and it’s not rats or roaches or bedbugs. What it is I cannot say, but I can tell you what it wants....

The central set-up, which I’ll mention is by far the least interesting part of the overall film, is troubled mother Jess (Katee Sackhoff) attempting to regain custody of the estranged Chloe (Lucy Boynton). Acting out, Chloe goes with her friend to the creepy old house of an alleged child murderer and, for some reason, baits her rumoured ghost by knocking on the door twice. Hijinks ensue. That might put some people off but, most importantly, it’ actually really scary....

1.8 Come To Die The show to date has been painfully slow, but this week felt like a full episode with the kind of action, passion (to a smaller extent), and machinations that one might expect of a Jonathan Rhys Meyers-led version of Dracula. And finally, that name has come to mean something within the story. I was starting to doubt whether they were ever really going to invoke the name of the dreaded vampire....

Dragon Ball Super Episode 33 After much anticipation, this tournament between universes is finally ready to begin. A lot of time has been spent setting all of this into motion over the past few installments and this official kick off does not disappoint. In fact, it’s one of more satisfying episodes of Dragon Ball Super in some time and a strong reminder of how fun this show can be when it really gets going....

Dragon Ball Super Episode 78 “He’ll erase…the universes!?” Even though this is “just a tournament,” the stakes are arguably even higher than they were with Cell, Buu, or even Beerus. The existence of the entire universe—not just the planet or the galaxy, but the whole freaking universe—is on the line. The fact that no one is directly attacking Earth or Universe 7 itself make this new arc initially feel a bit anti-climactic, but there’s literally never been more on the line....

Dragon Ball Super: Season 3, Episode 18 “I don’t just look like you. I took all of your powers, too. So, I’m Vegeta now!” “Menace of the Duplicate Vegeta” is a disappointing entry from a disappointing mini-saga. There’s no better way to put it. It’s almost as if Dragon Ball Super knows that this episode jerks fans around and wastes their time so it throws in some Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks as a knee-jerk panic move to earn goodwill....

DuckTales Episode 6 I should not find Donald Duck’s pain so amusing. When that machine toppled over and nearly killed him I was dying of laughter. Why is it so funny? Is it Donald’s over the top reaction to everything? Is it a chuckle of sympathy because I know what it’s like to feel like nothing’s going right in your life? This weeks episode thankfully brings both Scrooge and Donald back to the forefront after both being absent for several episodes....

And what he really gets across is the day to day variance of a theatre performance....

9 & 10. Mutiny & Eight Hours Unless you’re doing something super-awesome, it’s kind of an inconvenience for some viewers (like me). I have a set routine. I know when I have to be home, when I have to be ready to write and watch, and then boom, no such luck. I have to change everything around and make it in just barely in time, and I’m all out of sorts....

5.1 Find Your Warrior That remains to be seen, but after watching the first episode of the season, I can say that there is a very high body count and for once, Falling Skies doesn’t trade bloodshed for speeches—you get both, typically one after the other! Perhaps this biggest change thus far is that rather than flashing ahead three months or so, we pick up the action immediately where we left off at the end of season four....

The film’s story is loosely adapted from the classic Coming of Galactus story arc, in which the Fantastic Four find themselves up against an omnipotent cosmic force. This force has a name – Galactus – and a herald, in the form of a flying silver alien. In the film, the alien comes to the heroes’ attention when he starts transforming matter all over Earth and leaving great craters everywhere from New York to the Thames....

But with that acrid stench of collected radiator dust, you’re missing the beautiful orange loveliness going on outside (probably). You’ve just not twigged, you were too busy jostling on the bus, packing on the train, or furiously cycling (always cycling). But here’s a tip. If you make one knowing nod to the current season, go and see Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl children’s book. Key to this aesthetic is the textured, tactile dimension brought to the film by its stop-motion animation, with figures designed by Corpse Bride artisans MacKinnon and Saunders, photographed by Aardman DP Tristan Oliver, and manipulated at London’s Three Mills studios....

1.3 The Dog One of the touches I like about Fear The Walking Dead is its sound design. To say I live on a busy street would be an understatements; I’m on a major thoroughfare leading to a collection of hospitals, so during daylight hours there are always sirens passing by and helicopters overhead. One of the things Fear does well is its use of the sound of helicopters as a warning: helicopter blades means something bad is going to happen....

Before he branched out into live-action filmmaking, Burton was first and foremost an artist and animator, and the macabre style of his early work – the animated short Vincent, for example – informed the look of his 80s and early 90s Hollywood hits, particularly Beetlejuice, Batman and Edward Scissorhands. With these breakout movies, Burton established a style that could be described as Edward Gorey’s grotesque faux-Victorian storybooks brought into Reagan-era suburbia....

Collaborating again with Joel David Moore, Adam Green has managed to create a film which is sweet, funny, and creepy – and he won’t have to battle with the MPAA to get less than an NC-17 rating this time. Despite the low budget, Spiral looks great, and its original jazz soundtrack means it sounds great, too. Joel David Moore wrote and co-directed the film as well as playing the lead, and the film is essentially a two-hander between Moore and Amber Tamblyn as the almost unbelievably chirpy love interest....

After the travesty of the previous out-of-order episode, Fringe jumped straight back to form a few days later with a contemporary tale called Johari Window. Actually, not long ago this story was called Edina City Limits, a title that made more sense to me. On the face of it, this is an easily X-Files transportable story which relies on remote communities and closed societies, but it was really enjoyable. What elevated it was the subtle and unexpected twist in proceedings when, instead of wanting to see the monsters exterminated, you actually started to root for them....
