Misfits Series 5 Episode 6 Review

Misfits has become known over the years, to many people’s joy and to many people’s dismay, for pushing the boundaries of taste further than we ever thought they could go. This sixth episode of series five does this quite expertly, getting madder and madder as the hour progresses and, though there are still moments where you miss the old Misfits magic, it can’t be denied that this final series of the show is some of the strongest stuff they’ve done in a good long while....

Mr Holmes Review

Layers of fiction and history stack on top of each other to build Mr Holmes, a film that flits between the 1940s and 1910s as our hero struggles to remember the details of his last, traumatising case, one that prompted his exile to the Sussex countryside. The film presents Sherlock Holmes as a real person frustrated by the “worthless” fiction and “vulgar” fame that surrounds him. Dr Watson’s literary accounts of famous cases have passed into popular culture, spawning as many “penny dreadful” films as they have misconceptions....

Mr Robot Season 2 Episode 5 Review Logic Bomb

2.5 Logic Bomb In that sense, the show is not entirely dissimilar to a horror movie. Both need to bring an interesting enough concept to the table but after that it’s all about developing a strong pallor of dread. Logic Bomb, roughly the halfway point of season two considering episode one was actually episodes one and two, brings that sense of horror movie dread better than any Mr Robot episode before it....

Mr Robot Season 2 Episode 7 Review Handshake

2.7 Handshake It’s one of the main appeals of the show. TV as a medium has historically given the viewer what he or she wants. After all, if they’re not satisfied enough to stick around around for the commercials, what’s the point? The joy of Mr Robot and many other shows like it is that it’s willing to openly, sometimes gleefully fuck with us. It deceives us; never gives us a full portrait of what’s going on....

Music In The Movies Clint Eastwood

Whilst the album was far from a success, he has written a number of excellent pieces for films over the years including Honkytonk Man, City Heat, Heartbreak Ridge, A Perfect World, The Bridges Of Madison County, Qui, Absolute Power, True Crime, Space Cowboys, the piano compositions for In The Line Of Fire, and the excellent song that plays out during the credits of Gran Torino. Having penned numerous songs to accompany projects over the years, as well as assisting his long time composer, Lennie Niehaus, in a number of his projects, Eastwood made the transition to solo composer to striking effect, scoring a number of his recent films, showcasing his talent, and marking him as one of the most complete filmmakers working in the business today....

Music In The Movies The Social Network An Appreciation Of 2010 S Best Score

Best original score is a suitable label for this contribution by Reznor and Ross, who have shied away from the conventional approach and worked within a system that they’re both familiar with, having collaborated with each other a number of times in the past on other, non-movie-related projects. For me, The Social Network had the most original and cohesive score of last year and the one that exceeded my expectations....

My Favourite Christmas Tv Programme Knowing Me Knowing Yule

Reintroducing audiences to Partridge’s unique style of interviewing and adding some insights into his life outside of his chat show world, plus adding a Christmas tune and even an appearance by Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall for good measure, this delivers big laughs, a huge fall from grace, and a smattering of sympathy for the Norwich-born host. Next up is Mary, a bell ringer from Norwich Cathedral with strong views on Jesus and what the festive season should mean to us all....

Orphan Black Variable And Full Of Perturbation Review

Boy, would you have been wrong, as this week’s installment of the smartest and most daring sci-fi show on television perhaps made its ballsiest move yet, and I mean that literally and figuratively. More on that in a minute. First, let us discuss Cosima, the primary focus of this episode. Poor Cosima who is slowly dying from the genetic breakdown built into her genes. Cosima, the purest of the clones, the most human and good hearted....

Orphan Black Season 2 Episode 10 Review By Means Which Have Never Yet Been Tried

2.10 By Means Which Have Never Yet Been Tried We open with Sarah turning herself in to Dyad (and, echoing last week’s discussion of consent, we have Sarah pointing out that her “consent” given by signing the forms for Dyad to experiment on her are, in fact, not consent at all, given that she’s their prisoner). It’s heartbreaking to watch her turn herself in so immediately, because of course they got to her in the only way that would’ve made her run right into their arms....

Orphan Black Season 3 Episode 3 Review Formalized Complex And Costly

3.3. Formalized, Complex, And Costly My favourite thing about this show, aside from Tatiana Maslany’s perfect acting skills, is that more than two seasons in, it still manages to surprise me in ways that make perfect sense in retrospect, but that completely blindside me as they’re happening. It happens multiple times in this episode, first with Gracie. Gracie is someone I think about mostly with pity. She’s not someone I’d consider particularly brave or badass, which is in no way an insult; anyone who’d grown up in circumstances like she did would be reserved and meek....

Outcasts Episode 5 Review

After what’s been a bumpy week for the BBC’s Outcasts (courtesy of its forthcoming transfer to late Sunday nights), it’s something of a relief to be talking about the programme itself again. And, with its last episode in its 9pm Monday slot, the show went through the gears again, adding another ingredient into the mix. That ingredient was Patrick Baxter, the first person to land on Carpathia, and a man who has been talked about, but presumed dead....

Paranormal Activity The Ghost Dimension Review

Back in 2009, Paramount masterminded a revolutionary marketing campaign for Oren Peli’s micro-budget found footage horror movie Paranormal Activity. With endorsements from the likes of Steven Spielberg, it was arguably the most hyped film of its year and certainly the most profitable, returning $193m on a $15,000 budget. The Marked Ones eventually landed in January last year and the fifth film was bumped around the schedule quite a bit before it settled....

Peter Rabbit Review

In this modern update of the classic children’s tales The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, Peter (James Corden), his sisters Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki), and Cotton-Tail (Daisy Ridley), and their cousin Benjamin Bunny (Colin Moody) take on the next generation of the McGregor family. After the elder Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill) meets an untimely end (for which Peter morosely claims credit), this young Mr....

Poldark Season 3 Episode 2 Review

This review contains spoilers. Poldark Season 3, Episode 2 Ross Poldark, stay out of trouble? Not on your nelly. He’s got trouble written right through him like a stick of Cornwall rock. Demelza may as well wish for pigs to fly or for a bodice that adequately covers her cleavage as for Ross to live adventure-free. Like mining, swarthiness and rebellion, acts of derring-do are in his DNA. So it’s off to France he goes at the end of episode three, in search of excitement and Dwight Enys....

That package is a movie ticket with a smiley face on it. If it sounds like nothing to you or me, it means a lot to the Chinese underworld. Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Episode 15 Review Over A Barrel

5.15 Over A Barrel But it’s frustrating to watch, because the audience know this about the show by now, and there’s nothing worse than a bunch of protagonists who don’t know the rules of their own universe. Previously, it’s been characters like Spencer and Caleb – the voices of reason – that balance it out, but even they appear to have taken crazy pills this season. They’re still taking the initiative and investigating, but it’s all through the eyes that Ali is A....

Quarry Writers Break Down The Reluctant Hitman Drama

Quarry is adapted from the series of hard-boiled novels by Max Allan Collins, who also penned one of the episodes, and with the books having been written in the 1970s, Fuller and Gordy decided to keep the show in that era.“If you modernize the story,” explains Fuller, “then trying to speak to the things that are going on now… you’re hanging a lantern on it too much, and you don’t want that immediate commentary....

Ray Donovan Episode 4 Review Black Cadillac

1.4 Black Cadillac The makers of Ray Donovan have clearly aimed at the same angle. There are bad deeds a plenty and many a bad dude to do them. So why does it feel so different? Well, it’s fairly simple. If we’re to like the bad guy, he’s got to be likeable. If his particular brand of nastiness makes straight likeability a stretch, then good old fashioned charisma can easily fill the gap....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Lonely Among Us

1.7 Lonely Among Us The episode opens with the crew welcoming aboard some comedy delegates in bad costumes, whom they’re supposed to transport to the subtly-named planet of “Parliament”. En route, they plough the ship into some kind of energy cloud which causes Worf to get zapped through one of Star Trek‘s famously unearthed touchscreens. (Two words: surge protector.) The energy is some kind of alien life form, and it spends the bulk of the episode hopping from character to character and making them act completely irrationally towards everyone they know, derelict their duty, and generally cause havoc....
