2015 was fantastic for gaming, giving us some of the most awaited titles (and best) of the past decade. We got new Fallout, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, and Halo games. Nintendo gave us many more adventures with some of its most classic characters, including Yoshi and Kirby, plus new IPs, like Super Mario Maker and Splatoon, that showed that the Big N can still deliver major hits. Not to mention that we got our first new Star Wars console games in several years....
On this level, Trainwreck – Amy Schumer’s first foray onto the big screen – is pretty wonderful. Schumer has written a well-rounded, flawed, simultaneously repulsive and loveable character to play, and that in itself is a victory. That’s our set-up for the character’s arc, as an unsuitable writing assignment leads her to bumbling sports doctor Aaron (Bill Hader). They meet, they connect, but when things progress and Bill assumes they should just start dating, Amy is alarmed....
1.1 The Renegade Part One After the scene-setting Beck’s Beginning, Tron: Uprising begins in earnest with a two-parter taking the hero from last week and bringing him down a peg or two. The Renegade Part One finds the lead character of the show, Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), being trained in Tron’s icy seclusion. Voiced by the original actor, Bruce Boxleitner, the hero, now a forbidden word in The Grid, takes his protégé on some light-cycle fun in the snow....
In the penultimate episode of True Blood‘s third season, Eric Northman finally revealed the grand plan for His Majesty, a thoroughly deserved flame-grilling in the dawn sunshine. Sadly, the plan has one or two catches. Firstly, Sookie’s just about out of blood, having been drained by both Russell and Eric in order for them to be able to ‘enjoy’ the sun, and secondly, having ‘enjoyed’ the sunshine, Eric will suffer the same flame-grilled fate as the King....
Turn Season 4 Episode 4 After last week’s intense episode, which killed off a long-running major character, the characters on Turn: Washington’s Spies needed time to regroup. And to squabble among themselves. There’s really no fighting between the British and the Americans in this week’s episode, titled “Nightmare.” The commanders and their subordinates make plans for future operations that we’ll see in the coming season. But the real drama is conflict within each side....
First off, we have consequences for Melanie, the dome ghost. Rebecca brightly states that whatever is happening to the egg is happening to Melanie (wonder what happens if someone makes a dome egg omelet, best not to think about such things). Outside Chester’s Mill, the government is messing with the newly arrived egg, but it repeled everyone that touched it, because as we know, the only people that can touch it are Joe, Norrie, Junior, and Melanie....
The title of this week’s episode of V, We Can’t Win, works on a couple of levels. On one hand, it provided one of this week’s only highlights, in the form of a human sympathizer with the Visitors who sided with our reptilian overlords because, as he says when being smacked around by Hobbes and badgered by Erica, “We can’t win.” After all, they’re aliens with super technology, space ships, and scales....
3.2 Wanderer And that lull is productive narratively, as we see much on the horizon. Ragnar and his men (and women) are giving their weary limbs a rest—those limbs (and other body parts) that are not being removed, that is. The first to be freed from its trunk is the head of the fallen Brihtwulf, when his niece demands it of Ragnar. We can hardly blame her as she finally reveals not only the reason for that desire but also for her consistently bizarre behavior....
The original XFL lasted one year (2001), and is remembered for some of its off-the-wall antics, including cheerleaders who looked more like strippers and players wearing nicknames on their jerseys, such as the memorable “He Hate Me.” “There are seven months of no football, and there are 70 million fans,” McMahon said. “Right now is a perfect opportunity, and I always wanted to bring it back.” McMahon divested WWE stock last month, $100 million worth, in order to fund the new league through a new company, Alpha Entertainment....
At The CW’s Upfront presentation today, network president Mark Pedowitz finally divulged the reason why Wayward Sisters won’t get to carry on, explaining to the audience (via TV Line): So, there you have it, folks. The CW’s upcoming new The Vampire Diaries/The Originals spinoff series Legacies (which just today received a series order,) is apparently to blame, making Wayward Sisters a casualty of an unfortunate zero-sum dynamic of spinoff shows for the 2018-2019 television season....
Showrunners Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery love the Voltron universe and agree there’s a ton of potential in the world for a spin-off or sequel. However Dos Santos makes it clear that decision is outside of their control and that, “we couldn’t answer that now if you paid us a million dollars.” “How did the rebels form? How did the Blade of Marmora form?” Montgomery says. “Just exploring the depths of some of the organizations we didn’t get to spend a ton of time with....
1.5 Crows He wasn’t the only one. Claire Foy continues to breathe sparking vitality into the role of Anne Boleyn, whose candle is soon to be snuffed out. How Foy manages to arouse sympathy for the furious, bitter and vengeful character Mantel and Straughan have put on the page is unknowable, but God, she does it. Blame witchcraft. That, or her eyes, which betray Anne’s terror, even when her mouth is spitting out threats and boasts....
The film is set on Coney Island in some fantasy version of the 1950s; the exterior locations look lovely but the apartment that Ginny (Winslet) shares with second husband Humpty (Belushi) and her son from her first marriage (Jack Gore), who is a budding pyromaniac, looks like a set from a high school play with a painted backdrop of the Coney Island boardwalk behind it. Ginny is, of course, miserable: a former actress, she now toils in a boardwalk clamhouse while the unambitious recovering alcoholic Humpty runs the carousel and fishes for their supper off a nearby pier....
When I found out that they were making a sequel 18 years after the fact, starring Larry the Cable guy and C-list wrestler Santino Marella, while directed by the guy who made Carrot Top’s Chairman of the Board, I knew it would be a Molotov cocktail of crap. I had to see it. The movie isn’t a sequel in the traditional sense. None of the characters from the movie are referenced in any way....
Wynonna Earp Season 3, Episode 3 In some ways, death is simple. It’s final; as Wynonna spits out in this episode, it’s forever; it is maybe the only things in existence that resists shades of grey. But the way those who are left behind deal with death? That‘s complicated. It’s messy and unpredictable. Sometimes, it’s silly and awkward, sometimes it’s sober and precise. Always, it’s heavy, all-encompassing, impossible to see past....
When it does, the series will have plenty of tie-in stories to choose from. With a plot set in the 26th century and confirmed to include Master Chief, only one era is completely off-limits—the Forerunner era, the prehistory that set off the events in Halo 4 and featured in a dreamlike series of books by science fiction veteran Greg Bear. But there are still plenty of stories to work with....
Dooley inherited the composing gig from James Newton Howard, who wrote the music for all but one chapter (which Chris Bacon scored) of the first season of A Series of Unfortunate Events, but the nature of the series allowed Dooley to put his own spin on the music in season two. “Anytime you get to follow the likes of James Newton Howard, you’re going to be doing just fine,” says Dooley....
The real focus of the first season was not just who was left to walk this earth, but how they were able to grapple with the question of why they’re still here. What made the show a pleasure to watch for me was being uncomfortably forced to acknowledge the why. Coming to grips with your own mortality can take your mind to dark places and for many that was a deal breaker for The Leftovers....
Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 18 Well, the only Von Strucker family on television now is the family on Fox’s X-traordinary Gifted because good ‘ol Werner Von Strucker is the first victim of the newly risen Destroyer of Worlds. Doesn’t that sound ominous? Oh, it so is. This week on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Ruby Hale’s greatest wish comes true. She is able to force the captive Fitz and Simmons to build her the chamber that will allow her to bond with Gravitonium and become the Destroyer of Worlds....
