Man In An Orange Shirt Part 1 Review

The BBC delivers another moving drama in their ‘Gay Britannia’ season, a month of programming that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act of 1967 that began the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Vanessa Redgrave stars as Flora Berryman, a widow and grandmother whose life story takes centre stage in the first instalment of a two-part drama. This first story takes place towards the end of the Second World War and offers an insight into the life of the young Flora Talbot (Joanna Vanderham), her marriage to Michael Berryman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and Michael’s secret love affair with old school mate and fellow soldier Thomas March (James McArdle)....

Mark Gatiss Interview Writing Sherlock And Where It S Heading Next

We’re not used to having this much fun on telly in the middle of summer are we, as we are with Sherlock? It doesn’t seem to fit the usual template that we’ve got a high profile action/adventure/mystery on the BBC in late July/early August. Steven Moffat said of this Sherlock idea that you all had to write it before someone else does. And then, of course, Warner Bros announced its big budget feature film while you’re planning all of this....

Marvel S Agents Of S H I E L D Season 3 Episode 6 Among Us Hide

3.6 Among Us Hide To truly earn that iconic red and white studio tag at the start of each episode, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to be a lot of things at once. It needs to have engaging characters, quips that are actually funny, fights that look cool, dashings of heartfelt emotionality when the time is right, and some sense of inhabiting a universe filled with superheroes. Among Us Hide (sorry, I can’t keep doing the ellipsis) achieved all of these things....

Max Payne 3 Xbox 360 Review

Story Gameplay The first few Chapters, as the game is gone through and narrated much like a detective novel, are a bit story heavy, giving you plenty of chance to gather background information. This does lead to a couple of instances of at least a minute or two of sitting there watching and having little or no control over anything, not even the camera. If it were up to me, I probably would have added the camera control, even if limited, to have the player able to do something while the story unfolds....

Merlin Episode 8 Review

A Druid and his son come to Camelot, which is a very big mistake since the place is run by mad Uther, who doesn’t like magical people, even kids. Meanwhile, Uther is doing his irrational best to find the child, so he can give him the same haircut as his father. Anthony Head is obviously having scream playing the fruit-loop Uther, though I don’t find his version of insane quite as convincing as the one John Noble is parading in Fringe....

Mr Robot Episode 9 Review Eps1 8 M1Rr0R1Ng Qt

1.9 eps1.8_m1rr0r1ng.qt Contrary to expectation, having predicted the twist didn’t dilute its dramatic impact. That was largely thanks to Rami Malek, whose performance sold Elliot’s desperate disorientation with utter conviction. Props have to go to Christian Slater too, and moreover to whomever cast him in this part. I can’t think of a better choice to play a middle-aged malcontent lunatic hacker projected from the mind of his malcontent lunatic hacker son....

Music In The Movies Oil City Confidential

Prior to watching this I had very little exposure to Dr. Feelgood, as they were a bit before my time and hadn’t received the kind of cultural renaissance that many of their contemporaries have received over the years. Oil City Confidential charts the career of Dr. Feelgood from their modest beginnings as a junk band from Canvey Island to a highly successful and acclaimed blues band. The band’s sound was driven by Wilko Johnson, who imagined Canvey Island to be the equivalent of the Mississippi Delta, so the heavy blues influence was inevitable....

Nikita Episode 9 Review One Way

One Way To its credit, the show’s flashbacks always examine a character’s motivations for their seemingly inexcusable actions, and they always do so in an interesting way that has yet to feel contrived or unnecessary. Other shows would claim to use flashbacks for the same purpose, but it’s undeniable that some are guilty of using them as little more than cheap filler and in scenes which hold one’s interest with the same ability as a sock can hold a pint of lukewarm wee....

Noomi Rapace On Leaving The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Behind

Noomi Rapace kicked off the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film (though I still assert its Swedish title, Men Who Hate Women, is a million times better) for what became a full trilogy of movies, filmed and released in the author’s native Sweden. Rapace—who many are now familiar with from her roles in Sherlock Holmes, Prometheus, and The Drop—portrayed the films’ heroine, Lisbeth Salander. During our interview with Noomi about her new film, What Happened to Monday, we wondered if she would be interested in continuing the role of Salander since new novels are being written by David Lagercrantz....

Outcasts Episode 6 Review

And so, here we are. On Sunday nights, in Outcasts’ new slot, out of the limelight of prime BBC scheduling time. Thus, it’s not unwise an assumption that the people who have followed the show to the end of Sundays are friendly towards it, and have invested the necessary time to get to where we are now. Which, as it turns out, is a good thing. And I liked the episode, personally....

Outlaw King Review

And yet, it is easy to see Outlaw King has much of the same thoughts on its mind too, if only regarding Robert the Bruce as its subject of worship. Aye, the Netflix film which enjoyed the coveted opening night spot at the Toronto International Film Festival begins as mildly deconstructionist of Hollywood visions of Scots in revolt—even with its own Hollywood star in a dashing if underserved Chris Pine—but the movie really only starts landing its blows when, like Gibson before him, Pine is actually delivering said concussive strikes between wrathful speeches and horses on spikes....

Paradox Episode 4 Review

According to Dictionary.com, here’s what you get: I had to check, because I wasn’t actually aware I’d seen much of a paradox at all after four episodes of, er, Paradox. Unless you count the fact that the team of crack crap detectives had managed to change future events foretold to them by the wormhole/conspirator/Spacebook/Marty McFly. But are we seeing false propositions? It seems not, as the events that are presented by the weekly downloading of fresh pictures are all pretty much going to happen, without intervention....

1.5 Real Life If you’re a glassy-eyed wreck suffering from equal parts PTSD and survivor guilt, don’t rely on your own subconscious to conjure you up a relaxing psychic holiday. Preacher South Will Rise Again Review

Preacher: Season 1, Episode 4 This was certainly a more Jesse-centric episode than we’ve seen so far this season. While he may not have been in every scene, “South Will Rise Again” was about the people of Annville (including a couple of wayward angels) coming to terms with their preacher in one form or another. His star is certainly on the rise since winning Odin Quincannon back to the faith, that’s for sure....

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Episode 12 Review Now You See Me Now You Don T

4.12 Now You See Me You’ve got to give the Pretty Little Liars writers some credit – that took guts. Aside from making one of the Liars ‘Big A’ (or ‘Uber A’ as I refuse to call them), having Ezra Fitz revealed as a wrongun in this summer finale’s final moments was the most ballsy move they could have pulled at this point. Aside from the shippers and endless heartache this means for them, this changes absolutely everything we thought we knew about ‘A’, and Rosewood and Alison’s dealing with ‘Board Shorts’ in the summer before her supposed death....

1.4 The Good Of This City And yes, there’s also been the predictable backlash to the BBC’s new series. Is it too violent to be shown at 9pm? Is the gore unnecessary? Is it sexist?
