Once Upon A Time Breaking Glass Review

Once Upon a Time tantalized us with the whole Mary Margaret Getting Her Tracking Groove Back tonight. While it’s always good to see that broad do something kind of clever and goofy and adorable (pardoning Will Scarlett was all of those things… except for maybe clever) and not relegated to perma-shut-in status at home with baby Neil, I think the very real possibility that Mary Margaret’s priorities in a post-baby (who was not sent to another world) life have shifted, and not necessarily in ways David is equipped to handle with his usual aplomb....

Outlander Film Review

This film was originally shown at Cannes, and nearly a year later will appear in UK, after opening in the US this coming weekend. The rest of Europe has already seen it, so The Weinstein Company who made it clearly got cold feet about giving it a proper launch for whatever reasons. That’s actually a little surprising because compared with some other schlock sci-fi movies that have been made recently, (The Mutant Chronicles being a prime example) this one is actually quite good in places....

Overwatch Review

Gameplay, Aesthetics, and Personality Like many old school Blizzard fans, I was very hesitant about Overwatch when it was first announced. I love a good story-based shooter, but a multiplayer shooter from a company that can’t even seem to nail down arena balance in World of Warcraft? More importantly, how could Blizzard really add anything new to the shooter genre? It was a tough sell. But as more time passed, it became harder not to fall in love with Overwatch’s diverse cast, vibrant graphical approach, and the way it seemed to embrace fun in a genre full of dark themes and cynicism....

Paramount S New Attempt To Trim Gap Between Cinema And Vod

Paramount, however, has announced that it’s going to close that gap with a couple of its forthcoming horror movies. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Scout’s Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse are due out in American cinemas in October, but Paramount has hatched a deal with two major cinema chains – AMC Theatres and Cineplex Entertainment – that could see both films hit small screens before Christmas. To put this in perspective, consider the release of the last Paranormal Activity release, The Marked Ones....

Paranorman Review

Meanwhile, his parents are growing concerned at his insistence that the ghost of his late grandma is still floating around the house. “She’s not in a better place,” Norman tells his father. “She’s in the living room.” ParaNorman is beautifully timed to coincide with Universal’s centenary, and since it’s from Laika, the makers of Coraline, its macabre air and cheerful references to classic horror chime perfectly with the studio’s monster movie golden age....

Peep Show Series 6 Episode 2 Review

I adore his shtick, however, and Peep Show is the one series that provides it with the platform it deserves. You get the distinct impression that Mark Corrigan isn’t a million miles away from Mitchell’s own personality and when he gets variously annoyed with the youth of today, flatmate Jeremy or any number of daily occurrences that combine to ruin his day, I am left thinking that these incidents are probably ones that have aggravated Mitchell at some time during his life....

Point Break Review

Its uniquely sensitive spin on macho action movies has led to its reappraisal as a cult classic, thus making this remake pretty much inevitable. Few of us would have predicted that director/cinematographer Ericson Core would convert it into an extreme sports movie, but that’s one of the only surprises to be had here. Travelling to Paris to work under grizzled field agent Pappas (Ray Winstone), Utah is instructed to get close to Bodhi (Édgar Ramírez) and his crew and gather evidence of their crimes....

Poldark Series 3 Episode 5 Review

Set the dramatic drums a-beating and start the soaring strings – Ross Poldark’s off on another heroic mission. In the opening scene, babe-in-arms Clowance mewled at the prospect of her dad’s derring-do but she’ll soon learn. Recklessness and Ross Poldark go together like Prudie and rum, like Caroline Penvenen and glorious hats, like Tholly and the clap. Adding to George’s chagrin was the fact that Ross can’t seem to stop doing right in the eyes of his betters....

Prime Suspect 1973 Episode 2 Review

This review contains spoilers. Bentley’s sons, John (Lex Shrapnel) and David (Jay Taylor) are busy preparing for the robbery on a local branch of the British Savings Bank. They’re posing as workmen in order to drill through the wall of a neighbouring café and into the bank’s vaults, though obliging owner Silas Manato (Antony Skordi) is getting nervous about the interest from curious neighbour, Hebe (Charlotte Palmer). The Bentley boys’ mum Renee is curious about her sons’ activities, too, but John’s managed to keep David quiet so far, despite his brother’s constant misery, which appears to be connected to Julie Ann’s fate....

Psych Season 6 Episode 1 Review

6.1 Shawn Rescues Darth Vader Shawn Rescues Darth Vader, then, is rather a strange choice for the series to return on. It’s very much a gimmick episode – in this case, ‘What if Shawn and Gus had diplomatic immunity?’ – but surprisingly little is made of it. Yes, there are a couple of well-placed lines that stem from the idea, not least Shawn’s unsuccessful attempt to commandeer a Prius and his general uselessness at identifying and repeating foreign accents....

Psychoville Series 2 Episode 1 Review

“Not now, Silent Singer!” We’re only one episode in, but I’d wager this will be the most oft-quoted line from this second season of Psychoville. A new series featuring new lovably eccentric characters and evil antagonists, this first episode kicks the proceedings off with the macabre humour that’s become a trademark of writer/performers Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Over seven glorious weeks (or eight, if you add the equally brilliant Halloween special), we were introduced to infantile murderer David Sowerbutts, misanthropic clown Mr Jelly, blind, elderly toy collector Oscar Lomax, deranged midwife Joy, and dwarf actor Robert Greenspan....

Red Dwarf Xii Episode 4 Review Mechocracy

12.4 Mechocracy “I’m Kryten 2X4B and I approve this message.” Now, this is more like it. Whatever you thought of the first three episodes of Red Dwarf XII, you’re in for a real treat with the back half of the run. And what better way to start than with Mechocracy, a ship-bound character-driven satire which I think has a strong claim to being the first bonafide classic episode of the Dave era....

Review Burnout Dominator

Disappointingly, though, Burnout Revenge was a little less good than Burnout 3: Takedown, and Burnout Dominator is … well, also a little less good than Burnout 3. The points and scoring system have been overhauled again, but it’s still way too easy to move up the ranks; and the events in Dominator are really non-events. Dominator does away with the Crash Junction events, which I’ve never been a particular fan of anyway, but they were at least something a bit different, and the lack of them makes the other events feel very samey....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Coming Of Age

1.19 Coming Of Age Well, the day’s finally here. Wesley is taking his Starfleet Academy entrance exam. Yes, he’s saved the Enterprise and its crew multiple times, yes, he’s been flying the ship for weeks, but he was still pretty much on work experience. All he has to do is beat three other people and he’s in. What could go wrong? With the Enterprise in orbit around Relva VII, Picard welcomes his old friend Admiral Quinn aboard....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Justice

1.8 Justice If you grabbed someone off the street and said to them “Hey, remember how bad the early TNG episodes were?” they’d probably shout at you for touching them without invitation. But if they didn’t, there’s a good chance they’d instantly think of this one. The episode where Wesley Crusher receives the death sentence for accidentally trampling some flowers. And if you think that sounds stupid, wait until they start debating the ethics surrounding it later on… Now, to be completely honest, there’s a good idea at the centre of this episode....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng Loud As A Whisper

2.5 Loud as a Whisper The Enterprise is dispatched to collect the famous mediator, Riva, so that they can transport him to mediate a dispute on Solais V. Before the away team beams down, Troi senses Worf’s inner-turmoil. He denies it, although the ever-tactful Troi drags the truth out of him, and he reveals that before Riva negotiated treaties between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, there was no Klingon word for “peacemaker” (trivia: there are still no Klingon words for “slippers”, “decompress” or “fringe”)....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng The Defector

3.10 The Defector The episode opens with Data performing Shakespeare on the holodeck while Captain Picard both simultaneously watches and appears in it under heavy prosthetics (ah, the magic of television.) While Picard once again instructs Data in abstract concepts beyond his comprehension (seriously, that must get tiresome for everyone) they’re interrupted by Riker, who tells them a Romulan ship is requesting assistance. The Romulan scout ship is, in fact, being fired upon by a Romulan warbird AND it’s carrying a defector!...

Revisiting Star Trek Tng The Enemy

3.7 The Enemy Back on the ship, Dr Crusher tries to stabilise the Romulan, Patakh, while Wesley (naturally) devises a plan to save Geordi: they’ll shoot a probe to the surface with a neutrino beam only he can see. On the surface, Geordi MacGuyvers his way out of the pit using a phaser, some metal ore, a rubber band and an old carrier bag, and spots the neutrino beam. Things are going fine, when suddenly a second Romulan appears from nowhere and smashes him in the head....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng The Schizoid Man

2.6 The Schizoid Man Graves takes Data into his office and discusses the value of being alive with him, before casually remarking that he’s found a way to transfer his mind into a computer, then wondering aloud if Data has an “off” switch. At this point it’s clear where the episode’s going, but it takes another thirty minutes for the rest of the crew to catch up. Sigh. Data suddenly runs out of Graves’ office and announces that the scientist has died....

Ripper Street Series 5 Episode 4 Review The Dreaming Dead

5.4 The Dreaming Dead After the more sombre and melancholic pace of the last episode, The Dreaming Dead comes crashing in like a thunderbolt of action, revelations, and dramatic moments. The contrast between the two instalments makes the payoff moments in this episode all the more effective for the set-up that has gone before. Nathaniel once again retreats to the background, but his loyalty to his brother is tested after he discovers from Jackson that Dove has gone back on his promise to keep Robin safe....
