Starting Monday 6 July at 9:00pm on BBC 1 Torchwood: Children Of Earth begins its 5-in-a-row run, lead by Captain Jack, in an experimental week of the third season sci-fi series. Pre-show press promises a dark and chilling tale told nightly through Friday. Each episode also airs later on BBC 3 (11:45pm first night), but we plan to catch the earliest action possible. Whether this one-week wrap-up proves to be wise or weak, time and telly will tell. If five nights straight of new sci-fi doesn’t appeal enough, how about a return to some classic shudders with BBC 4’s re-airing of The Day Of The Triffids? The 6-part 1981 series about post-apocalyptic plantlife uproots again on Sunday 5th July at 7:00pm. A remake is imminent, so if you want to be able to compare – and complain, now’s your chance. Lastly, CNN’s The Screening Room features Terry Gilliam in an ‘Xtra’ version at the Ibiza Film Festival where he discusses The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, Heath Ledger’s final filmed performance in which his co-stars take turns in the actor’s scenes after his passing. Plus, details on the resuscitation of a literary Spanish hero in The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (see here for info on its original demise). Airdates are Saturday 4 July through Monday the 6th, but please check schedules on the day(s) as our sources are in conflict on the show times. The Sci-Fi channel is running the excellent series, Jericho, from its pilot episode beginning 8 July at 11:00am with subsequent eps showing hourly after that until 4:00pm. The series run continues through the week and weekend, so check your schedules for a first or second chance to see this sorely missed, quality program starring Skeet Ulrich. UPDATE: 9 July Another season start-up that slipped by us, Mock The Week, hosted by Dara Ó Briain (whom we interviewed here late last year) starts its seventh series run Thursday 9 July at 9:00pm on BBC 2. To fill any gaps between all that, here are the week’s pick of films broadcast in the next 7 days. Feeling fit and up to a marathon this Sunday, 30 August? BBC 2 is showing back-to-back episodes of the six first season shows of The Office. Clock in at 9:00pm for a straight run past midnight. The shows will be intro-ed by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and various cast members as well as celeb admirers and guest stars of the brilliant mockumentary. The next Doctor Who Greatest Moments has prying eyes for The Enemies. At 8:00pm Thursday, 3 September on BBC 3, Derek Jacobi joins other Whoniverse evil-doers only a minion could love for exclusive interviews, recollections and details of their dasterdly plots and undoings. What happens when a well-intentioned vampire trying to cut back on the blood intake befriends a neighbourhood boy? Well, modern day equivalents of pitchforks are at the ready in Being Human, also on Thursday, 3 September on BBC 1 at 10:35pm. This list takes you into Bank Holiday Monday and a bit beyond and when that dent wears away, we’re sure she’ll be accommodating and bring this list through next Thursday, as you’ve grown accustomed to. So, pop back after the weekend for updates and, as always, check your local schedules for confirmation and avoid tots of the geek inclined tuning in for Horton and finding The Hitcher. UPDATE 31/08/09: The film list now goes through and including Thursday, 3 September. (And the chin dent is practically a mere memory now. Sherlock Holmes fans can brush up on Conan Doyle’s inspired character creation before his latest big screen outing, with Conan Doyle For The Defence, Saturday 26th September on BBC4 at 8:05pm with a double dose of sleuthing that includes repeat airings of 2000-2001’s Murder Rooms: Mysteries Of The Real Sherlock Holmes, starring the late Ian Richardson. The first episode, The Dark Beginnings Of Sherlock Holmes is shown at 9:05pm, following the Conan Doyle documentary. Then on Monday 28th September at 9:00pm, Lost fans, who will soon be left high and dry when that epic series washes ashore for the last time, will be watching and banking on FlashForward, a new series debut on channel Five entitled No More Good Days. The cast includes ‘Say My Name Exactly As You See It’ Joseph Fiennes and Lost alumni Dominic Monaghan and promises grey cell smashing and crashing moments for the sci-fi fantasy fan. Let’s hope that it can fill that oceanic gap. And now to the week’s films and, as always, if there’s a show or movie this week you feel merits a nod, shout it out in the comments, please. 28 Days LaterOn: E4Date: Sunday 27th SeptemberTime: title: “Geek Shows And Movies On Uk Tv In The Coming Week” ShowToc: true date: “2025-07-23” author: “Tim Toscano”
Two fantastic shows reach their bloody peaks on FX this week. Tonight at 10:00 and 12:15 the revelation of the killer’s identity for our favourite mind reading waitress will be shocking and violent in True Blood, You’ll Be The Death Of Me. Will Sookie escape the vamp-lover hater without permanent damage? And what clues will we have for the future of Bon Temps and its human, vamp and shapeshifting citizens? Also on Sunday, on Sky1, the second series of Fringe begins with A New Day In The Old Town at 10:00pm. This is a show you really need to watch from the first moments, as each week’s setup is usually rapidly revealed. Will this opener add fuel to the promise of the series’ potential? Or hit an immovable object at breakneck speed? Tune in and see and let us know what you think. By Monday you may need a brief breather from sci-fi and paranormality and we’d recommend heavy doses of laughter as a good refresher. We can think of few shows that could fill that prescription as well as any episode of 30 Rock – the Tina Fey headed sitcom that unveiled Alec Baldwin’s comedic genius. Who knew? If you’ve never seen the show, we’ve got a character rundown and catch-up here before the third season starts on Comedy Central with Do-Over at 10:00pm. You’ll want to go to there too. Another exciting launch occurs on Tuesday the 6th October with the new Stargate Universe. We’re hoping it fits snugly into that big expanse of sci-fi space left vacant and voided and we’re really anxious to see what Robert Carlyle can do with a weekly series of this ilk. We’ve had the smallest peek with a trailer here and spoke with co-creator Brad Wright too, but it finally all kicks off with a hefty two hour chunk of telly on Sky1 Tuesday at 8:00pm with Air Part One and Part Two at 9:00pm. And now for something completely different…again… Python fans can top up their admiration on Saturday 3rd October at 9:15pm on BBC2 with Monty Python: Almost The Truth – The BBC Lawyers’ Cut. If that title isn’t enough to get you tuning in then the prospect of new interviews with the cast, the first time they’ve assembled together since Meaning Of Life, may be a tempter to join the 40th (can you believe that!? 40 years!) anniversary celebration. It airs again on Sunday the 4th on BBC2 at 11:40pm. Now to the week’s films and, as always, if there’s a show or movie we missed this week you feel deserves a nod, shout it out in the comments, please. Please also note: the ordinal numbers for dates will help you scan through this simple list with your browser’s search function. Enter ‘3rd’ in your browser’s Find box or window to highlight and/or tab through all movies shown on Saturday. Enjoy! Two BBC productions of substantial weight and chuckles fire up tonight starting at 9:00pm on BBC1 with the new series of Have I Got News For You. It’s followed at 9:30pm by The Armstrong & Miller Show, putting their own tag team brand of funny to the test. That hour is in direct competition with Peepshow and repeats of IT Crowd, same time, different channel. So, just in case you’re torn, A Bit More News For You then runs Saturday 17 October at 9:30pm on BBC2 and A&M‘s series premiere repeat airs Thursday 22 October at 11:45pm on BBC4. Mock The Week regular Russell will host his own show, Russell Howard’s Good News, which will tackle current topics of interest, with big squeezes of comedy slathered round, no doubt, at 10:30pm Thursday 22 October on BBC3, and viewers can submit news stories through Twitter or the BBC website. We chatted with Mr Howard here and wish him every success – and a lot of fun – tonight and in weeks to come. Now, on to this week’s collection of 70s and 80s classics, creaky and contemporary comedies (some with extra cheese), and new and old shock, shlock and horror films scheduled to air over the next seven days. Peep Show squeaks out its last episode of its sixth season with a finale wherein Jeremy plans to thwart the nuptials of his once shared, sort of girlfriend Elena to her partner, Gail. And Mark may need to beef up his daddy cred and make a stand against child naming catastrophes fast, as Sophie goes into labour. All this happens at 10:00pm tonight on Channel 4. The Thick Of It returns for a second season of eight episodes on BBC2 starting at 10:10pm on Saturday the 24th. If you’ve never seen the show, you may want to also catch the double episode special entitled Spinners And Losers on BBC4 tonight at 25 past midnight. That’s from the prior season and may ease you in to the sharp wit (and tongues) of the political comedy and its pawns and major players. The BBC will also play home away from home to American Dad, the animated cousin of Family Guy. The third season opener, The Vacation Goo airs at 10:25pm on Sunday, the 25th on BB3. (The first season of American Dad is currently running on FX if you need an introduction to the Smith family.) Please also note: the ordinal numbers for dates will help you scan through this simple list with your browser’s search function. Enter ’24th’ in your browser’s Find box or window to highlight and/or tab through all movies shown on Saturday. There isn’t a single new program launch on this week’s horizon that we’re even mildly interested in, but do we care? Do we, heck! Because Sunday. This Sunday. The one that follows Saturday. Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars, the special, airs and we only have eyes for David. We’re sure of only one thing even in advance of watching: it’s bound to make us miss The Tenth Doctor that much more and give this Christmas coming a certain pang – a chest tightening wrench beyond the reach of the credit crunch’s fist. Elsewhere in the universe… we’ve seen the first episode of E4’s Misfits (which Madeleine’s reviewed here – mortgaging her REM cycles in the process this week. We thank you, Madeleine!) Based on the opening episode, we’ve now dedicated PVR disc space to the entire run. Take that as a rather substantial commitment on our part. Few shows make the record mode cut. As always, if we’ve missed anything, share your personal picks in the comments section with our thanks. We’re approaching those couple-few weeks where your boxset purchases prove to be money well spent as few new series will be rearing their heads for fear of competing with the holiday specials or airing in households of the otherwise occupied. If you’re lucky enough to have access to the Current TV channel (Sky channel 183 or Virgin channel 155) your Monday night, November 23rd at 10:00pm is spoken for with World Of Warcraft Stole My Life: Second Skin. This documentary ventures into the sphere of pixelised elves, warlocks and warriors, or rather, the humans pushing them about and sending them forth with mice and key combos. The MMORPG has a huge amount of fans and possibly more than its fair share of addicts. It’s these compulsives who’ll tell their stories, and whether you’re more likely to relate or ridicule, it’s sure to make for a fascinating watch. On the non-game plane, those of us who followed and commented on Mark Oakley’s reviews of the latest series of Peep Show pretty much agreed it was one of the finest runs of half a dozen episodes. If you missed any (ar all) of the show’s sixth series you can peek in again on a marathon run of back-to-back eps on Saturday, 21st November starting at 9:20pm on E4 (and an hour later on E4+1). If there’s one man heroic enough to take on the holiday TV elements, it’s our Mr Stephen Fry hosting QI. The seventh series of this especially clever, classy – but equally hysterical – quiz show airs tonight at 10:00pm on BBC1. Gardens is the key word and guest guessers are David Mitchell, Rob Brydon, Dara O Briain and funny fixture Alan Davies. There are still some good programmes in their mid-series runs as well as plenty of great flicks coming up this weekend and a bit beyond. You could go for back-to-back Keaton era Batman on Saturday, cuddle with the kiddles and Robots on Sunday, then warm up with Sunshine at night. What perfect timing, then, for the launch of the fifth season of comedy showcase, Live At The Apollo. In the first of six shows featuring the best comedians to make personal appearances in your sitting room, Jason Manford and Michael McIntyre take centre stage and control of your laugh-snorts, starting tonight at 9:30pm on BBC 1. Then on Sunday, for Who fans of all ages, the new animated series of Doctor Who, Dreamland, will gather its six episodes of 7-14 minutes each and show them all together as a feature event on BBC 2, 5th December at 10:00am. We, personally, preferred the style of the previous animated series, but the monsters here do look like they’re as impressively cel-shaded and, truth be told, we’d watch a stick figure version of The 10th Doctor, as long as he was voiced by David Tennant. If all that doesn’t raise you from the depths of any self-induced or high street-inflicted pre-holiday funk, we have a CV of one Mr Bob Cratchit you may want to consider hiring. Just state your preference of PDF or plain text. Please also note: the ordinal numbers for dates will help you scan through this simple list with your browser’s search function. It’s almost comical to think that coming up geeks may know of Eddie Izzard more for his film career (Mystery Men, Valkyrie) and TV appearances (The Riches and upcoming The Day Of The Triffids) than his standup routines of the late nineties and early naughties. Tonight at 11:15pm on More4 we get more original Eddie Izzard, this time in Eddie Izzard: Dress To Kill. And yes, he does. Any admirers of Mr Izzard’s thespian-only endeavours are in for an eye-opening and jaw ache. The recorded live show from 1999 is repeated on Saturday, the 12th, at 2:50am. On Saturday night at 10:10pm on BBC2 the last episode of the current season of The Thick Of It airs. Can Malcolm work his foul-mouthed magic and make a miraculous return? Or is the potty spouter gone for good? There’ll, no doubt, be Galting gun expletives and laughs flying, no matter what the outcome. The finale is repeated on BBC HD and BBC4 a little later in the week should you miss the F bombs and other capital initial missiles launch. There’s still more comedy on offer among the weekend’s films and a bit beyond. And for those UK TV viewers reading about Mr John Lithgow’s current idolisation in this season’s Dexter Stateside, you can at least console yourself with his portrayal of Don Quixote, until season four makes our shores. In the US, the new season of shows yet to make it to our shores starts up, with Chuck being the leader of the pack. We’ll need to wait a bit for Chuck and others, but worry not, because some great, unique UK TV is ready to roll out on home ground. Then, on Sunday 10th January, BBC3 serves up a second series of Being Human at 9:30pm. The supernatural flatmates have more mortal (though likely immoral) adversaries this lease renewal, we hear. We have no doubt humans can be a bigger threat than vampires, werewolves and ghosts put together, when put to the test, and we’ll be there from this new beginning to find out. Also making a second series appearance is Survivors. The post-apocalytpic drama picks up from its tenuous, dangling cliffhanger on BBC1 at 9:00pm on Tuesday, 12th January. The Fantasy Worlds Of Irwin Allen, a documentary on the sci-fi series creator of such classics as Land Of The Giants and Lost In Space, should be a real treat, with geeky behind-the-scenes and outtake footage and a look at Allen’s disaster films as well, airing tonight, the 8th, at 7:30pm on BBC4. Doctor Who fan favourite, the Hugo Award winning, Steven Moffat authored, The Girl In The Fireplace, will be shown again tonight, Friday 22nd January at 8:10pm on BBC3. If it’s not in your collection – and why not?! – enjoy it again this evening, if only as a familiar appetiser for what might be to come with the next Doctor Who head writer and executive producer. This week is when those ‘plus’ boxes and broadband accounts will show they’re worth the added expense and earn their keep, as airing at the same time as Den Of Geek favourite, Being Human (on BB3), Sunday, 24th January at 9:00pm, over on Sky 1 Jack Bauer starts his eighth worst day ever. Season 8 of the drama series, 24, ramps up and takes off in a double episode run taking us through the hours of 4:00 to 6:00am, unveiling an assassination plot for the formerly retired Jack to once again get dragged back into the line of fire, explosions, torture and traitorous strangers and associates. Whichever show you watch, postpone, or record, when you’ve seen the episodes, stop back and debate the goings-on, and the series’ longevity with us here. After a week away, post-apocalyptic drama Survivors returns on BBC1 at 9:00pm Tuesday 26th January. It’s a postponed airing of the second episode of the second series. Another double premiere happens on Wednesday, 27th January starting at 10:00pm when Mad Men‘s third season begins on BBC4 with Out Of Town, followed immediately by Love Among The Ruins at 10:45pm. Please also note: the ordinal numbers for dates will help you scan through this simple list with your browser’s search function. We mentioned the re-broadcast of the modernised Canterbury Tales a couple weeks back. This week’s episode, The Knight’s Tale, unites Life On Mars‘ John Simm with Ashes To Ashes‘ Keeley Hawes. It’s one of the best in the series, relocated to a prison setting, and airs Wednesday, 10th March at 10:00pm on ITV3. Or, if that doesn’t suit and you missed or couldn’t find Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience when we first wrote about it, you can catch it on its return trip on Wednesday 10th March at 10:00pm on BBC2. The Welsh comedian doesn’t refuse to get his hands dirty when he tackles his first job as Bin Man. Now, on to the films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. Tomorrow, Saturday April 10th is another of those Channel 4 100 countdowns. We’re not usually intrigued, but this time it’s The 100 Greatest Stand Ups 2010, which, of all countdown lists, has to have a chuckle or two tucked away between ad breaks. It starts at 9:00pm. Then at 10:00pm on the SciFi channel, the revamped, revised, but virtually the same series, V lands at 10:00pm. If you’ve never seen the original 1980s series, you can watch through fresh human eyes, but it’s also tempting to old V friends to see what a new version looks like. Also on the SciFi channel, on Wednesday, April 14th, a really good comic book-based action show kicks off in a pilot followed by another episode, called Rewind. It’s Human Target, the story of Christopher Chance and his small team who go to great – and personal – lengths to protect their clients. It stars Mark Valley, with at least one well choreographed fight scene in every episode guaranteed, as well as one of the most interesting TV characters on telly in Jackie Earle Haley’s Guerrero. We like it. A lot. All that’s in addition to Fridays’Ashes To Ashes, at 9pm, Saturday’s Doctor Who, 6:15pm, both BBC1, new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Sky Premiere at 6pm Fridays, and K-9 for the youngest geeks and those young at heart on Disney XD, weekends at 4pm. On Saturday, April 17th, a show that is perhaps unwise to be shown in pubs will air at 9:30pm on ITV. We say that as it’s the reimagining of The Prisoner, a 60s show with a devoted following. Bring those who consider an update sacrilegious, in terms of classic TV telly, into close proximity to the curious, who don’t mind a fresh shiny wash and relocation of characters, add alcohol, and barroom brawls may be imminent. You’ve been warned. Watch anonymously and safely from your settee. Back to comedy on Monday April 19th, where the fourth season premiere of a personal favourite funny bone tickler, 30 Rock, airs at 10:00pm on (where else?) Comedy Central. Liz and Jack (Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin) are frequent visitors in these parts and the prospect of a whole new season has our typing fingers twitching as we write this. Now, having professed our love of stand-ups and comedy performers in the opening, we now hang our heads in shame as we admit we missed the first episode last Thursday of You Have Been Watching, a panel game show of a promising sort that combines Charlie Brooker’s unique perspective on all things televised, but adds guest comedians who’ll be quizzed on TV scenes as well as discussing the merits or disgraces of the programmes that fill the UK TV viewing schedules. We did pick a good week to spot it, though, as the guests this Thursday, April 22nd are Robert Webb, Jason Manford and Sharon Horgan, who’ll settle in their seats with Charlie at 10:00pm on Channel 4. If you have the Quest channel (Freeview 38, Sky Digital 154 or Virgin Media 179) you can catch a very geeky show, with extra added nerd in Science Of The Impossible on Sunday, May 2nd at 9:00pm. In this documentary series, scientists and sci-fi writers look at whether the future and fantasy tech and weapons from some of our favourite films can be achievable now. Yes, right now. And this week? How to build a lightsaber. You read that right. Better clear some workspace in the back room, we think. (Oh, and order a lightning harnesser sharpish. We expect demand will exceed supplies.) On Tuesday, May 4th, BBC1 airs the first of a six-episode detective drama, Luther, at 9:00pm. Now, this isn’t normally the sort of genre that gets a mention here. But it does, and for two reasons: Idris Elba and Paul McGann. Those are two names that have never let us down, and are worth the effort to find the remote or remember to set the timer. We’ll have a review of the first episode soon after it airs, so you can submit your verdict and share your opinions on these pages. And we wouldn’t be worth our pixels if we didn’t remind readers that Ashes To Ashes airs in its usual spot on BBC1 at 9:00pm tonight and Doctor Who parks the TARDIS on BBC1 at 6:25pm on Saturday, May 1st, where Flesh And Stone is the inflight episode. Now, on to those films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. Discovery Channel is airing Stephen Hawking’s Universe on Sunday, May 9th at 9:00pm. It’s described as covering questions inquiring minds want to know, such as: “How did our universe begin? Could alien life be found in distant planets? Does our galaxy have a life expectancy? And is time travel possible?” And answering them thusly: “Cutting edge effects, digitally enhanced NASA footage and live action are combined to bring Hawking’s extraordinary vision of the universe to the screen for the first time in this visually stunning and captivating three-part series.” The first episode asks Are We Alone? The acid test for whether you’re reaching the super-grouch status stage of your life (and it’s not age dependent, mind you) may be found on BBC2 on Monday night at 9:00pm in The Grumpy Guide To The Eighties. The grumps set their curmudgeonly glaring sights on the decade we’re especially fond of around here for its wealth of fun shows and films. Can you snicker along in agreement when the spotlight is on “the decade that style forgot”? Or will you advocate your favourite era with an angry letter defending the New Romantics, mullets and big hair, a certain coloured cube and the cuteness of Cabbage Patch dolls? There’s also a great round-up of films to fill the hours in-between, including a double dose of Roald Dahl (James And The Giant Peach and Matilda) for big and little geeks, Iron Man 2 alumni Scarlett Johansson in a duo of films (The Island and Lost In Translation), Sly Stallone’s one-two punch of Cliffhanger and Demolition Man and Mickey Rourke in Angel Heart. Plus, more time-tested favourites in all genres. Now, on to the films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. Sure there are plenty of good shows to watch, but as far as new shows taking off this week, the launch pad is barren. The second show to end its current series hasn’t been mentioned much by us, but is worth checking out when you get the chance. Outnumbered will likely be appreciated most by people with kids, or who know kids, or who at least like kids. Because the two youngest in this series are uber kids, at the pinnacle of their kidness and causing all the exasperations that can bring with it. Hugh Dennis as the dad is easy to commiserate with and we hope to see Sue, Pete, Jake, Ben and Karen back for another round of family-fuelled fun soon. The third series finale airs on BBC1 on Thursday, May 20th at 9:30pm. Also this week on BBC1, the penultimate episode of the final series of Ashes To Ashes airs at 9:00 tonight, Friday May 14th and Amy’s Choice, the next Doctor Who episode is shown on Saturday, May 15th at 6:25pm. While we’re still in mourning mode, Doctor Who will try to soothe us with the first of a two-part episode, The Hungry Earth, on BBC1 at 6:15, Saturday, May 22nd. And now, admission time: we’re not personally familiar with Martin Amis’ 1984 novel, Money, but we understand it’s reached cult status and continually makes the top of lists of good books. The current trend in telly and film for all things ninteen-eighty-fied continues with an adaptation starring Nick Frost, which gets us interested no matter what the book buzz does. The two-parter starts on Sunday, May 23rd at 9:00pm on BBC2 and concludes on Wednesday, May 26th, same time. We’ve saved our feature film picture spot for Arnie, but there’s more geek icon star gazing on the schedules in the next seven days. Sky movies premieres Mickey Rourke as The Wrestler this week while Predators and Splice star Adrien Brody appears in an earlier sci-fi thriller, The Jacket. Here are the details for those and more films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks… 300On: Bravo Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 9:00pm (and 10:00pm Bravo+1, 10/11:00pm 24th May Bravo/+1) A History Of ViolenceOn: Channel 4 Date: Monday 24th MayTime: 11:40pm (and 00:40am 25th May 4+1) Air Force OneOn: Sky Movies Action and AdventureDate: Friday 21st May 2010Time: 6:50pm Back To SchoolOn: TCMDate: Friday 21st MayTime: 9:00pm BackdraftOn: Sky1 Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 11:00pm (and midnight Sky 2)Bad LieutenantOn: Film4Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 11:30pm (and 00:30am Film4+1) Bill And Ted’s Excellent AdventureOn: ITV2 Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 12:40pm (and 1:40pm ITV2+1) BrazilOn: BBC 2 Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 01:35am End Of DaysOn: ITV4Date: Friday 21st MayTime: 11:10pm (and 00:10am 22nd May ITV4+1) FargoOn: Sky Movies Crime and Thriller Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 01:25am Galaxy QuestOn: Sky Movies Family Date: Friday 21st MayTime: 2:15pm (and 8:00pm) High Plains DrifterOn: Five Date: Thursday 27th MayTime: 9:00pm Let The Right One InOn: FXDate: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 11:30pm (and 2:10am 25th May) Man On FireOn: BBC 1 Date: Friday 21st MayTime: 11:45pm NetworkOn: TCMDate: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 11:30pmOverboardOn: ITV1Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 4:00pmProject XOn: Film4 Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 1:00pm (ans 2:00pm Film4+1, 6:55/7:55pm 24th May Film4/+1) RockyOn: Virgin 1 Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 9:00pm (and 10:00pm Virgin+1, 3/4:00pm 23rd May Virgin/+1)Saving Private RyanOn: Film4Date: Monday 24th MayTime: 9:00pm (and 10:00pm Film4+1) SilveradoOn: WatchDate: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 4:30pm (and 5:30pm Watch+1) Star Trek: NemesisOn: E4Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 2:40pm (and 3:40pm E4+1) SwordfishOn: Five USADate: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 10:00pmThe African QueenOn: more4Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 2:45pmThe Day Of The LocustOn: Sky Movies Modern GreatsDate: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 00:50am The EnforcerOn: ITV1 Date: Friday 21st MayTime: 10:35pm (and 22:10pm 24th May) The JacketOn: ITV1 Date: Tuesday 25th MayTime: 10:35pm The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The RingOn: Channel 4 Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 7:00pm (and 8:00pm 4+1) The Monster SquadOn: Sky Movies Sci-Fi/HorrorDate: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 09:40am (and 3:55am 23rd May) The MummyOn: ITV2Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 7:00pm (and 8:00pm ITV2+1) The TerminatorOn: BBC 2 Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 10:30pm The UntouchablesOn: Channel 4 Date: Sunday 23rd MayTime: 10:35pm (and 11:35pm 4+1) The WrestlerOn: Sky Movies Premiere Date: Friday 21st MayTime: 10:00pm (and 11:00pm Premeiere+1 and daily at similar times through 24th May)Underworld: Rise Of The LycansOn: Sky Movies Sci-Fi/Horror Date: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 00:05am (and 9:00pm 25th May) WatchmenOn: Sky Movies Sci-Fi/HorrorDate: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 9:00pmZoolanderOn: WatchDate: Saturday 22nd MayTime: 10:00pm (and 11:00pm Watch+1, 9/10:00pm 23rd May Watch/+1)

Newcomers or devotees reliving the thrill of the first Dexter season will want to remember the concluding episode, Born Free happens Monday, June 7th at 1:10am on FX. Then season 2 splashes onto TV screens on Wednesday, June 9th at 10:00pm with It’s Alive (but probably not for long). The closing episode of Luther airs Tuesday June 8th at 9:00pm on BBC1. While it’s been a mixed bag, week to week, we can’t leave Luther hanging without a fitting end, so we’ll see where the volatile detective takes us in this series finale. Also wrapping up on Sky1 is Fringe, in it’s concluding half to the finale of its second season, Over There, airing on at 10:00pm Tuesday, June 8th. With a third season secured, the episode leaves us dangling and anxious for more as the parallel universes and their occupants clash. One of our new favourite imported comedies wraps up Thursday, June 10th with the Modern Family finale, Family Portrait on Sky1 at 8:00pm. We hope there’s more to come on that family front soon. And this week’s Doctor Who episode, Vincent And The Doctor, starts at 6:40pm on BBC1 on Saturday, June 5th. We have a spoiler-free review here and we’ll have our full spoiler-filled impressions on Saturday night. Firstly, The IT Crowd is back for its fourth season tonight, June 25th, at 10:00pm on Channel 4 with Jen The Fredo. Jen’s latest attempt to escape the confines of the basement IT department, even temporarily, sees her take on a part-time position as Entertainments Manager. Ignoring the warnings of techies Moss and Roy, she finds the job is not for her. But a bit of role reversal and a game of role playing will soon sort things out in the Graham Linehan scripted series return. Another favourite series finishes this week with the close of 30 Rock‘s fourth season. Back-to-back episodes finish things off with triple weddings and love triangles in Emanuelle Goes To Dinosaur Land at 10:00pm and I Do, Do at 10:30pm on Comedy Central, Monday June 28th. (Watch for a return of The Damned United and The Queen actor, Michael Sheen, as Liz love interest Wesley Snipes. Yes, Wesley Snipes!) If you ever wondered what a space western might look like, or what the fuss over Firefly was all about, the Horror Channel is re-running the series, written by Joss Whedon and starring Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Morena Baccarin and Adam Balwin, with double opener Serenity on Saturday, June 26th at 6:00pm. Lastly, rockers and groupies alike will want to be sure to watch two diehards of the metal age in the surprisingly touching documentary, Anvil, on Storyville Monday, June 28th at 10:00pm on BBC4. The story of these now fifty-something last chancers made our Top 10 music documentaries list and received a 5 star review as well. We don’t easily give those out, making this must-see telly for those with even an iota of interest, and instantly adding value to TV license bills across the country. Now, on to the films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. But does that mean we’ll shut off our tellies and rush into the sunshine for fresh air and exercise? No. No, it does not. Instead we’ve put our energy into scouring the schedules to find anything to replace those UV rays with TV signals. A holiday last week temporarily interrupted the telly listing, a week wherein our own equally brilliant series, Misfits, could be rewatched from that first freaky weather occurrence. The series about ASBO owners with abilities beyond awesome tagging skills is airing on Saturdays, with episode two next at 10:00pm, July 17th. But don’t worry if you missed the start, as you can watch it from the beginning online at Channel 4 here, although you’ll have to sit through a few thirty second ads first. A strategically timed kettle boil will take care of that nicely. Another missed kick-off was the launch of the fourth series of That Mitchell And Webb Look, but the BBC iPlayer comes to the rescue for the first episode here. We particularly enjoyed the sign language-assisted show, the “I don’t know what you want anymore” retakes and the aggressively pedantic boss skits. The second episode airs Tuesday, July 20th at 9:00pm. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. The IT Crowd finale of its fourth season airs tonight at 10:00pm on Channel 4 with Reynholm v Reynholm. This latest series was a sweet and sour assortment for our reviewers and this final show may be the deciding factor for its future. It involves another court case, so we’ll see which sets were reused and, as long as the jokes are fresh, what the verdict might be for a fifth series’ worth of fans. (Last week’s Vista punchline was enough to get our vote for a stay of execution!) Either way, our reviews will be live shortly after the final credits. A second helping of Sherlock, a show that satisfied on all levels, will be dished out on Sunday, August 1st at 8:30pm on BBC1 in a mystery entitled The Blind Banker. We’re already regretting the short run of this excellent show. It’s a real treat to end the weekend on, but there’s only a third show to go. We’ll have our review soon after Sunday’s episode ends and we welcome your opinions. Here’s hoping they count toward an order for more soon. On Tuesday, August 3rd, we have an unknown quantity in The Deep, showing at 9:00pm on BBC1. The first episode, To The Furthest Place, establishes the story of a research submarine’s expedition in the Arctic Ocean, searching for a prior sub that’s disappeared. It has the formula used by many a good sci-fi thriller: claustrophobic surroundings + a threatening environment + no means of escape, so we’ll see if that equals scheduling couch time for the full five episode run or not. title: “Geek Shows And Movies On Uk Tv In The Coming Week” ShowToc: true date: “2025-07-20” author: “Jeffrey Dorsey”
Saturday night, August 14th at 10:00pm on Channel 4, the final episode of the first series of the unlikely and often unlovable superpower-imbued Misfits is repeated. It’s an important one to catch if you haven’t seen it, and to refresh your memory if you have. The second series, due in autumn, is bound to pick up on the spot, and reveal the fate of the group of ASBOed heroes. Now, on to the films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. They include some choice picks to share with the youngest telly watchers still developing their habits. With films based on comics, a Roald Dahl story, and Muppets, there’s plenty to tempt them to the geek side. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks. Please also note: the ordinal numbers for dates will help you scan through this simple list with your browser’s search function.
