What a finale that was. If the BBC hadn’t already renewed Peaky Blinders for series four and five, the send-a-newsboy-cap-to-the-commissioner postal campaign would have started here. Happily, we can all save our money and bask in the glow of some terrific television safe in the knowledge it’s not going anywhere yet. It’s also a brilliant hook for series four. The practical and emotional fallout from Tommy’s “trust me, brother” deal will be fascinating....

There are those who look back fondly on the original, a live action/cel animation hybrid in which Mickey Rooney and Jim Dale gurned at a delightful cartoon dragon, but it’s hard to say that it stands up to the likes of similarly designed films like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs & Broomsticks. Nearly four decades on, the most unlikely of directors, David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) has taken a trifle and stirred up a moving and majestic remake, transplanting the action from the 1900s to the early 1980s and from the seaside village of Passamaquoddy to the Pacific North-Western logging community of Millhaven....

Preacher Episode 6 While last year’s Mad Max: Fury Road was an amazing film from a visionary director, many people still accused George Miller of a bait and switch. Namely, the movie focused more on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa than it did on its titular hero, who many thought played second fiddle in his own movie (there are many arguments for and against this idea, but personally I don’t think Fury Road suffers for Max’s diminished role)....

1.1 Pilot In a lot of ways, it’s the perfect comic for a teenage boy; funny, perverse, violent, sacrilegious, and obsessed with the removal of male genitalia. However, Preacher was also capable of some deep thoughts, deeper insights on faith, what it means to be in a world like ours, to be searching for something. Of course, it never lets these deeper thoughts get in the way of the violence, but what comic book (aside from Harvey Pekar) doesn’t trade intelligence for murder at some point?...

Preacher Season 3 Episode 7 It’s hard not to love a show that so rarely ever holds anything back. With Preacher, even throwaway lines of dialogue (usually uttered nonchalantly by T.C.) contain the kind of bombshell vulgarity that would stop a lesser show in its tracks. But for some reason, AMC’s adaptation of this 20-year-old comic book property flies under the radar of more conservative sensibilities. Not that I’m complaining....

The police took an interest in the Scott’s ex-wife Patricia Wright within days of the murder. Because of a lack of evidence, the case went cold for 16 years. The first major break came when Patricia’s brother cut a deal and testified, implicating Patricia and a family friend....

3.23 Sarek Although his entourage seem over-protective of Sarek, insisting that he’s excused from all non-essential functions, Sarek himself seems surprisingly energetic. Nonetheless, Picard lets him off the Mozart concert he had planned, and also tells Worf not to bother setting up the Tri-Dimensional Guess Who? Tournament (probably). When checking out the conference room, Sarek gets uncharacteristically agitated at the unpreparedness of it. Geordi and Wesley don’t help the situation by complaining about the smell of the slime the Legaran delegation live in and talking about Wesley’s upcoming hot date with Ensign Suzanne Dumont....

This review contains spoilers. While on his way to Risa in a shuttlecraft, Geordi bumps into a Romulan Warbird, who promptly send a replacement to his artificial intelligence symposium and set about brainwashing him to be the perfect weapon: a confused and tired engineer. (As an aside, I really want to see what that double was up to on Risa. Probably trying to appear inconspicuous and looking awkward at parties....

Jamie Lloyd’s play sets Shakespeare’s lurid account of Richard III’s rapid ascent to “the supreme seat” against the backdrop of the 1979 English winter of discontent. The idea, apt pun aside, is to evoke political instability and bring to mind the behind-the-scenes machinations that unseat power. Of which there are many, and brutal all. We’re spared, thankfully, the Princes in the Tower being butchered, but not the blood-drenched assassin’s woeful report after the act....

The episode jumps right into it: there’s an evil Rick hopping around dimensions murdering other Ricks and kidnapping their Morties. Also, a number of Ricks have banded together to form the Council of Ricks, and they think Rick (as in the one we’ve been watching for ten episodes) is the killer. So our Rick and Morty set off to find the real killer. The chase scene in “Close Rick-counters,” in which Rick and Morty go portal-ing around the universe with the Council of Ricks in hot pursuit, is in a class of its own....

DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon, Sony’s Cloud With A Chance Of Meatballs, Paramount’s extraordinary Rango, Illumination Studios’ Despicable Me, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and Disney’s Tangled are the peak of a strong collection of films. It’s not for nothing, therefore, that many believe we’re in the midst of a whole new golden age of animation. The story sort of mirrors Rango very early on, but not for long....

However, you wouldn’t know that watching this week’s episode of Raw. Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman came to the ring for a promo, and Heyman — as usual — was perfect. He hit on all the right notes and generated a lot of heel heat for Lesnar going into the show on Friday in Saudi Arabia. Roman Reigns came out and surprisingly wasn’t booed. Weird, right? Reigns didn’t cut a very long promo at all — it was only a few lines in a script — before Reigns dropped his mic, and left....

The thin, often relatable line between good and evil is what Shadowed Souls, a new speculative fiction anthology edited by Kerrie L. Hughes and Jim Butcher (author of Dresden Files), works to explore, with short stories from some of the best fantasy authors of the moment that show the complicated nature of good and evil. As Butcher puts it in his foreword: Some of the short stories in the Shadowed Soulscollection succeed at exploring this theme better than others, but there is something in here for most lovers of speculative fiction — and you might just come away with a new author to check out....

Billy Batson is a homeless orphan, who befriends a hobo and taken to meet an old wizard, who wants to pass his powers onto him. When he utters the word ‘Shazam’, he turns into a muscle-bound righter of wrongs who has the combined powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. Jeff Smith made his name as creator of the award-winning Bone series, bringing life and humour to a whole menagerie of creatures....

Fun is a solid place to start with the episode, which brims with gags and outstrips even A Scandal in Belgravia for cheekiness. Mark Gatiss’ script offers up laugh after laugh, deftly arriving at punch lines via nods to canon and fandom both. Unlike The Empty Hearse’s immediate predecessor, laughter outweighs tears in the episode, though it’s worth saying that watching an episode of Sherlock in a theatre of excited fans acts as an amplifier for comedy: every tip of the hat to canon is met with applause and every punch line with a roar of laughter that muffles nuance....

Martin Scorsese’s latest film, the historical drama Silence, is like that sequence stretched to feature length. It’s about an overriding belief in the goodness of the almighty and of divine justice, and then having that certitude tested to its very limit. At what point does a person’s faith reach its breaking point? Along with fellow priest Garrpe (Adam Driver), Rodrigues goes to Japan to find Ferreira and save his tarnished reputation....

4.5 Brick This week’s Sons Of Anarchy is a very strong episode, which is something I never thought I would say about something that features David Hasselhoff. To be honest, I had to rewind when I read his name in the opening credits to make sure that I hadn’t had something slipped into my coffee. But it’s true: The Hoff has a cameo as porn producer, Dondo. As it turns out, The Hoff’s appearance is but a brief one, and the episode itself has been my favourite so far....

It’s finally happened; Douglas Archer has dropped the pragmatism and taken a stand, silencing critics Sylvia and Harry in the process. Next week, he’s on a mission for England so terribly bold and dangerous it deserves a terribly bold and dangerous English codename – Lionheart say, or Nelson’s Pointy Hat. Let’s go with that. It needed to, frankly, because there wasn’t much in episode four to raise the pulse. It was a pretty morose hour, largely comprising Archer dolefully watching the already-terrible world around him get even worse....

1.6 Stabbed With A White Wench’s Black Eye For the strongest element of the show is undoubtedly what’s going on in the world beyond the walls of high school and, although this episode took Emery, Roman etc. to a posh charity event for the bulk of the hour, the show seems determined to place the love life of its heroine above the political issues and genuine threat of annihilation that regularly produce the series’ best moments....
