A Dog S Purpose Review

Over the course of the 120-minute running time we follow the travelling soul of a dog in various different doggie bodies, starting with Bailey – owned by Riverdale’s non-ginger KJ Apa as a young Dennis Quaid – then moving on to police dog Ellie (yes the dog switches gender, but is still voiced by Josh Gad), then faithful companion Tino and, finally, Buddy. And yes, by nature of being a film about reincarnation, a lot of innocent puppies die....

A History Of Horror With Mark Gatiss Episode 1 Review Frankenstein Goes To Hollywood

In the first of a three part series, Gatiss explores the golden age of Hollywood horror, stretching from its early days in 1920s silent cinema through to the classic monster pictures of the 30s. His BBC backing allows him some remarkably exclusive access, from an exploration of the quite beautiful set from 1925’s The Phantom Of The Opera, which remarkably, still stands, to the make-up kit of that movie’s star, Lon Chaney Sr....

Abigail Spencer Transforms In Both Timeless And Rectify

Of course, the two characters couldn’t be more different. “If you were to watch Rectify and watch Timeless you wouldn’t necessarily be like, ‘Oh, that’s the same actress,’” says Spencer, “and that’s the goal, to completely inhabit people who are so wildly different, not being limited to certain tones, or types.” When Lucy visited the 60’s for the moon landing on a recent episode of Timeless, viewers may have been reminded of another Spencer role: that of teacher Suzanne Farrell in the quintessential 60’s mega-hit, Mad Men....

Agents Of Shield Season 3 Finale Review

Well, another year of Agents of SHIELD has come and gone, and it really is amazing that three years have gone by since Marvel first announced Agents of SHIELD at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, Marvel’s TV presence has risen thanks to Agent Carter (sadly, there will be no more) and the magnificence of its Netflix shows. As Agents of SHIELD ends for another season, it is time to reflect on the finale and the season as a whole....

American Horror Story Freak Show Episode 6 Review Bullseye

4.6 Bullseye One of the show’s better visual moments this season involves the classic sideshow stunt, the wheel of death. You strap someone in, spin the wheel, and then you throw knives at that person, usually getting close to the head and genitals, but never actually injuring the person. Since this is American Horror Story, that wheel becomes more than just a show. It’s a warning, and when the knife thrower is an enraged Elsa Mars, well… accidents happen....

American Horror Story Season 6 Roanoke Chapter 10

Every time American Horror Story delves into a different genre of show, they’ve hit it dead on the nose every time. My Roanoke Nightmare was perfect; the reunion reality show was completely accurate even as it went off the rails. Chapter 10 bypasses both conceits by throwing a mixed bag of genres at the screen. The show’s segments are, in no particular order, a true crime show, a series of YouTube videos, a confessional prime-time celebrity interview, and best of all, a ridiculous ghost-hunting show with a dead accurate presentation....

Archer Season 4 Episode 2 The Wind Cries Mary Review

Lucas was the kind of guy who Archer loved spending time with. They would pick on flamboyantly Gay Ray together, make sexually explicit “Your Mom” jokes together and they would even enjoy Archer getting laid together (Lucas only watched). It was a time of idyllic grown men frolicking naked on the locker room floor. Alas, Archer knows that his mother drove them apart because she was jealous of their totally masculine and hetero relationship....

Arrow Sins Of The Father Review

Arrow Season 4, Episode 13 If you think this generation of Star City change-makers has issues solving problems in moral ways, then you haven’t met their parents. Arrowthrew tonight’s theme right into its episode title — “Sins of the Father” — and, like other recent, solid episode of the superhero show, the hour’s disparate plot parts benefitted from a strong central theme: everyone’s dad is the worst. Especially Thea’s. Oliver chooses diplomacy over murder....

Arrow Suicide Squad Review

There isn’t a hell of a lot of Ollie on display in “Suicide Squad” but Stephen Amell made his moments count. What started off with “Bratva Ollie” making an appearance turned into something a little more sinister…even desperate. Slade Wilson is in Ollie’s head right now, leaving Ollie quite happy to make deals with the devil in order to make something happen. The thing is, he’s not particularly in a deal making mood…and who can blame him?...

Arthur Review

Arthur’s got one problem: he’s never had to grow up. He’s an embarrassment to the family corporation, he’s an embarrassment to his mother and family, and he’s squandering his considerable wealth and intelligence on a life of drunken debauchery. Arthur is like Paris Hilton, but with charm, no sex tapes, and no felony convictions. If there’s one thing you can say about this version of Arthur, it’s that it bears little resemblance to the Dudley Moore version of the same story....

Baskets Season 3 Episode 2 Review Finding Eddie

Baskets Season 3 Episode 2 My problems with the season three premiere of Baskets were that 1) not a whole lot happened, and 2) there wasn’t enough Martha. “Finding Eddie” handily delivers where that episode did not as Martha and Chip go on a road trip to the countryside to bring back Eddie, the rodeo’s original owner. Being a Law & Order fan, Martha gets pretty into following Eddie’s trail and just about everything she does and says is funny, so I’ll just list a few highlights....

Bedlam Season 2 Episode 3 Review

I wasn’t too thrilled about last week’s Bedlam, and this week might be even worse. Last series, the guest stars were top-notch, from The Fades’ Lily Loveless to Ashley Walters, but now we’re handed the stiff and non-present Tiana Benjamin, and the episode ends up suffering more than it can possibly take. The relationship triangle between Ellie, Dan and Max is stirred up and left to settle in a very different dynamic, but things between them still feel a little forced, especially when compared to the ensemble last year....

Beowulf Producer Steve Starkey Interview

How did you first get involved in Beowulf? You know, Bob’s committed himself to this art form and to seeing where it can go. As a director I think he likes the idea that he’s able to separate the performance, which is working with his actors, and not have to worry about, “well, is the camera right? Did they get the wardrobe, and the makeup right – is there a boom in the shot?...

Beowulf Return To The Shieldlands Episode 10 Review

This week on Slean: Prince of the Shieldlands, we discover that Slean has always known Elvina was a skin-shifter, but loves her and slept with her anyway, even at the risk of being executed. It’s probably fortunate he didn’t tell Kela that, as for all her talk about how it doesn’t matter whether they love each other or not, she’s clearly threatened. Kela’s desire to take over as healer when she thought Elvina was gone is intriguing....

Boardwalk Empire Episode 4 Review Anastasia

Boardwalk Empire is still very much finding its feet. The vast shadow cast by the influence of both Martin Scorsese’s gangster classics and HBO’s acclaimed dramatic output is a legacy that would be difficult for any show to live up to. But sometimes it’s hard to tell exactly who is struggling the most with Boardwalk Empire during this, the show’s genesis period. By the conclusion of Anastasia, it feels like our two factions might be working our way to a compromise....

Boardwalk Empire Episode 9 Review Belle Femme

It seems like now the battle lines are officially drawn for Boardwalk Empire. After a pilot that nearly everyone could agree was a hugely impressive opening salvo, one that demonstrated an enormous amount of potential, the viewers who have stuck around have divided down the middle into two camps. There are those who think it’s evolved into the best drama in years, and those who think it’s a turgid incident-free bore....

Breaking Bad Season 5 Episode 5 Review Dead Freight

5.5 Dead Freight And here we are, deep into this truncated fifth season, and still these ‘rabbit-in-the-hat’ moments, if we’re keeping this tenuous magician analogy alive a bit longer, keep coming at us with what seems to be an ever-increasing ferocity. The biggest twist in Lost (the flash-forwarding conclusion to the third season finale Through The Looking Glass) was famously given the codename ‘the rattlesnake in the mailbox’ – the conclusion of Dead Freight, conversely, gave us a spider in a glass jar, and while it may not ultimately feel quite as much of a ‘game-changer’ for the series, the overall effect was just as deadly....

Celebrating The B Movie Performances Of Michael Caine

“If there is one thing worse than being offered bad scripts it’s being offered none at all,” Michael Caine once noted – an admission that might explain some of the roles he’s taken on over his long and often wonderful career. Chuck Season 5 Episode 10 Review Chuck Versus Bo

5.10 Chuck Versus Bo In the opening five minutes they throw some new ideas into play, with the notion that Carmichael Industries will get out of the spy game and become a cyber-terrorist hunting outfit. Colombiana Review

Doing so gets her safely out of her cocaine-addled homeland, and onto the slightly less cocaine-addled streets of Chicago, Illinois. Little Cataleya doesn’t want to go to school, or buy pretty dresses, or even do more parkour. She wants revenge on the men who killed her parents. There’s only one thing causing Don Luis strife. His associates from the criminal underworld he’s nebulously in charge of? They keep ending up dead....
