Misfits Episode 6 Review

Of course it wasn’t a battle for battle’s sake. It was there to create a reason for the most shocking of conclusions: Nathan’s death, and resurrection. Hands up who saw that coming?! All jaws were on the floor in my household, I don’t mind telling you. The scenes following the death were fantastically done, showing the misfits genuinely grieving for their lost pal, especially Kelly, who has been growing closer and closer to Nathan in a rather unlikely romance....

Misfits Series 3 Episode 1 Review

After last year’s departure of star player Nathan, many of us were just a little bit worried about the state of Misfits. Arguably one of the UK’s most imaginative and high quality shows, what would become of our gang of delinquents once their loudest member had departed? And the product of this chaos was apparent on our screens last night. This Is England‘s Joseph Gilgun has slipped into the Nathan-shaped gap of the gang quite nicely, but how long will it be until viewers start to pine for the dynamic of yesteryear?...

Misfits Series 5 Episode 5 Review

This final year of Misfits has been really great and, though this Finn-centric fifth episode wasn’t my absolute favourite, I can admit that the reason is a personal one. Finn’s probably my least favourite character of the new group, but at least this episode took us back to the sci-fi concept vs. crude humour of old Misfits. In it, Finn is taken hostage by a girl, Leah, who can both create virtual worlds and download herself into anyone she has the phone number of....

Miss Bala Review

Against a backdrop of corruption and gang warfare, Laura (Stephanie Stigman) enters a beauty pageant, only to find herself embroiled in the running battle between criminals and police. While attempting to locate her missing best friend, Laura falls into the clutches of seedy, sweaty gangster Lino Valdez (Noe Hernandez), and becomes an unwitting accomplice as violence in the city continues to escalate. From a technical standpoint, Miss Bala is an astonishing achievement, and clearly the product of an experienced and intelligent filmmaker....

Monsters Dark Continent Review

Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant – the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands, so step forward Tom Green (TV’s Misfits, Blackout) to direct the sequel Monsters: Dark Continent, which he’s co-written with Jay Basu (the writer behind the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid movie)....

Morning Glory Review

She sends out resumes, works the phones, and generally makes a nuisance of herself until she lands a network job. Unfortunately, it’s not on her dream programme, The Today Show. It’s not Good Morning America. It’s the little-watched Daybreak, the fourth-place network morning program on IBS. He hates morning television, and believes the morning infotainment programme is the scourge that is killing the nation’s collective intelligence, but it’s either stand up for his principals or pay his bills....

Mr Robot Episode 5 Review Eps1 4 3Xpl0Its Wmv

1.5 eps1.4_3xpl0its.wmv It’s satisfying to see a series with this strong a handle on building tension, perspective-play, cliff-hangers and other thriller staples also engage with complicated thematic ideas. How often have you heard genre movies described as big and dumb, as if there’s something inherently simplistic about any story that follows a formula? Mr Robot does on television what a film like Inception or—yes, again—Fight Club did on the big screen, by marrying gripping, stylish, thriller elements with big ideas....

Music In Film Man Of Steel Soundtrack Review

You don’t notice it at first: the film starts off with a gentle synth. Some brass enters, accompanied by a faintly other-worldly vocalist. The strings whip us away with threatening fast-paced noises. The drums. So many drums. “Someone else might wonder one day what 12 of the best drummers in the world would sound like all playing simultaneously in a space designed for a symphony orchestra – using not only rock drum kits but tympani and field drums as well....

Nashville Season 3 Premiere Review That S Me Without You

“That’s Me Without You” had more quick cuts and short scenes than I remember from past episodes, but that’s what happens when your audience grows and everyone wants to see ends you left unraveled at the end of the last season tied back up at the beginning of this season. Tonight’s episode covered the Luke-Rayna-Deacon love triangle, Juliette spiraling after Avery needs space, Avery and Gunnar joining Scarlett for an impromptu road trip, Will and Layla dealing with their sham of a relationship, Teddy and his daughter Maddie joining us for two random scenes we could have done without and… I think I’m forgetting something… oh yes, three live performances....

Not Going Out Series 4 Episode 1 Review Drugs

If the original axe-wielders at the BBC had had their way, then this is a review that would never have been written. For, even before the third series of Not Going Out had finished airing, the Beeb announced that it wouldn’t be commissioning a fourth. The show was canned. Thank goodness, then, for the persistence of Lee Mack and the team at Avalon, who somehow managed to turn the heads in the BBC’s secret bunker, and earn the show a reprieve....

Outlander Rent Review

That’s because as a former theatre nerd, I have strong associations with the word ‘Rent.’ To be specific, it invokes vivid memories of my own angst commingled with pop-Broadway warbling about AIDS, being broke, and in love. Thankfully (or not, depending on your predilections, I suppose) neither Claire nor Jamie burst spontaneously into song, though I have it on good authority that she does have the best ass below Culloden....

Outlander Season 3 Episode 10 Review Heaven And Earth

Outlander Season 3 Episode 10 In any other show, jumping off a ship into the dark ocean would be the craziest thing one romantic lead has done for another. On Outlander, it’s like #15 on the list. Basically, it’s just another Thursday in the love story of Jamie and Claire. One of those children is Elias Pound, a 14-year-old naval officer tasked with helping Claire treat the sick and dying, and making sure she gets whatever she wants whilst aboard the ship....

Oz The Great And Powerful Review

But if Burton’s billion dollar behemoth veered a little too close to being … you know, for kids, then Raimi manages to conjure up a bit of magic himself. His Oz The Great And Powerful treads a delicate tightrope, part blockbuster eye candy, part gleeful riposte to sanitised Disney tales. And for those who grew up on the Raimi oeuvre, it’s even better. Because Oz The Great And Powerful plays like a greatest hits of Sam Raimi – deft genre hopping, flying witches, giddy camera zooms, Bruce Campbell....

Pitch Perfect Review

Kendrick (her real-life wit and charm belied by the blandness of recent film roles in the likes of What To Expect When You’re Expecting, and The Twilight Saga) plays freshman Beca, an alt-gal whose heavy eyeliner, vinyl collection, and closed-off emotions mark her out as different to the chart hit-listening WASPs who recruit her for their a cappella group, the Bellas. Styled like air hostesses and performing a set-list of cringe-worthy nineties pop, the Bellas are in dire need of an update to have a hope of winning a national a cappella contest....

Primeval Series 2 Episode 3 Review

Personally I think that this probably isn’t what the writers wanted but the fact that Ben Miller is on nearly every TV show at the moment means he probably wasn’t available to film anything to do with the more intriguing aspects of the show. For fans of this aspect of the show all we get is a secret meeting between Martin from Green Wing and the dodgy new girlfriend of Connor’s, with them working together and getting up to no good....

Professor Layton And Pandora S Box Nintendo Ds Review

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t trust this review. In fact, you should trust it more, because, in my eyes, the next Layton instalment has so much to live up to! Short of pouring me a whisky and giving me a foot rub whilst bamboozling my mind, I struggle to see how Pandora’s Box can improve on the first game. It really does try to live up to its predecessor, though – and almost succeeds too....

Ratchet Clank Video Game Review

Ratchet and Clank are back, and after blasting my way through the galaxy with them once again, it’s clear that we’ve been in need of heroes such as these for quite some time. The story has all of the heart, humor, and adventure that you would expect from a Ratchet & Clank game, and the production is polished to an absolute shine. The string of Ratchet & Clank: Future games on PS3 were often likened to playing a Pixar film by many in the media, but this PS4 release takes that feeling to a completely new level....

Reinventing Robotech

Having read ahead the story veers even furthur off the path that was laid down in the original 85 episodes. That may worry some hardcore fans but Robotech has needed a reinvention for quite some time. The comic series still has the spirit of Robotech while also telling a more concise story that is free from the need to fill out synidcation requirements of the 80’s. No flashback stories and no over explaning narrator to weld together three different anime series....

Revisiting Star Trek Tng The Icarus Factor

2.14 The Icarus Factor Good news everyone. I accidentally watched the wrong episode. We’ll look at Times Squared (2.13) next week instead. So anyway. En route to Starbase Montgomery for some maintenance, Picard informs Riker that he’s up for promotion – his own command and a deep space mission, both his if he wants it. He resolves to consider his acceptance. Ooh, the suspense! (not really. Was this even convincing at the time?...

Revolution There Will Be Blood Review

And here we are: Episode two. So what’s happened to Aaron? That’s a mystery! They seem to be setting it up to be somehow connected to the swarms of creatures. OK, I’m interested. And then there’s Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and Munroe (David Lyons). Well, I have a few ideas how that’s going to end up, so it’s not really a mystery. If nothing else, the bounty hunter and Charlie will hook up, or at least have some sexual tension....
