The story takes place 60 years in the future, in a post apocalyptic world in which “fected” are free roaming the Earth trying to survive mutant attacks. There are allegedly no humans left on Earth. Number 13 follows a boy who suffers from amnesia and is apparently alone in the world. The boy has the number “13“ written on the side of his head in black and an Iron-Man like glowing chest piece and that is pretty much all we know about him....

3.10 The Light Above Think of the first season of Preacher. Jackie Earle Haley, a great antagonist to Jesse, goes out with a literal bang thanks to an explosion at the power plant. An explosion that essentially kills everyone the show populated the first season with, save our three main characters and Eugene. In the second season, the end of the season is a little less radical, but no less impressive....

And now four. That makes it hard, not just as a critic that gets to review his favorite show, one that did not even get into the show until season four wrapped. Before I become the major pineapple-wielding and smoothie drinking fan that I have transformed into, I had four fresh full seasons of Psych to gorge myself on in all of their 80’s goodness, and I continue to enjoy in seasons five as Shawn & Gus, collectively the Psychic Detective Agency: “Psych”....

1.10 Fite Nite You see, it can be done. As I said last week, one of the problems with Ray Donovan, indeed, possibly its defining problem, is its lack of structural tension. It has some solid ideas at its core but they’ve been too easily dismissed by a tendency to add more extraneous details, which are then easily abandoned with scant regard for narrative justification. When it strips things down to its bare bones, it’s a much leaner and far more effective show....

Unable to contain my excitement, a tiny yelp emitted from my mouth, causing the shopkeeper to lift his eyes from the cash register and several small children to snigger at my expense. I cared not as, for less than a fiver, I had found a piece of history. Picking it up before anyone else had a chance, I hurriedly took it to the cash desk, avoided eye contact with the aforementioned retailer, handed over my five pounds and practically ran out of the store in anticipation of the unbridled joy that was about to be bestowed on me....

And yet in tonight’s episode of Resurrection titled “Miracles,” the “wonderful event” was not that Rachael came back from the dead, that she came back pregnant, that her child—even though it’s growing at an alarming rate—is by all intents and purposes healthy. The “miracle” is that, as far as we know, a deathbed-prepared Rachael is cured of her Spanish flu via prayer. Which, truthfully, is kind of lame for being the main plotline of this episode....

Having just emerged from the IMAX theatre on London’s South Bank, from one of many ‘Avatar day’ showings of 15 minutes from the new James Cameron movie, I still don’t really know what to think. Listen up, maggots…The first scene will be familiar to anyone who loves Full Metal Jacket or Aliens, as drill sergeant-type Col. Quaritch (played by genre favourite Stephen Lang) informs the new arrivals on Pandora that they can basically expect to be killed the second they step out of the military enclosure....

Some giant-sized angst courtesy of Buffy’s plus-size, pantsless little sister, and two disappointingly brief glimpses at what series Watchers, Giles and Andrew, have been up to since the Hellmouth officially closed for business – including a particularly funny speech on Lando Calrissian’s outfit from the aforementioned ubergeek – are thrown in for good measure. However – despite an impressive pedigree – Whedon still hasn’t quite found his rhythm as a comic book author, at least not where Buffy is concerned....

The episode begins with Buffy hammering down Xander’s door in the middle of the night, looking for Spike. She really, really owes Xander an apology right about now, along the lines of “I’m sorry I made you shack up with a serial killer.” But she’s Buffy, so she won’t. Meanwhile, Spike is digging a grave for the girl we saw him biting last week. The credits roll, and then we’re in London, where a Watchery-looking guy has just come home to find a dead girl on the floor and some guys in black robes waiting to kill him....

4.7 Reunion K’Ehleyr warns Picard that Chancellor K’mpec is dying and wishes to see Picard. K’mpec reveals that one of the two candidates to succeed him has poisoned him. It’s either Gowron, or Duras. He asks that Picard arbitrate the succession battle and expose the dishonourable murder to help secure the future of the council. Then he dies off screen. Meanwhile, K’Ehleyr confirms to Worf that the boy, Alexander, is his son....

3.8 The Price The episode opens with Troi collecting her voicemail, because that is a thing people still do in the future. After deleting all of the messages from her mother and ignoring junk mail about a new psychology study, she sits down and starts asking the replicator for “real” chocolate, which confuses the replicator because what else would it make? Unreal chocolate? Having finally established Troi’s secondary character trait (they’ve all got one....

2.13 Time Squared With no mothership to be found, they take the shuttlecraft on board and slowly (rather too slowly) come to the realisation that it’s one of the Enterprise’s own – only their version is still in shuttlebay already! Things get even more confusing when they open the craft to discover an unconscious and barely-alive duplicate of Captain Picard! The other Picard is taken to sickbay while Data and Geordi try to figure out where the shuttle came from....

The crux of “Something Ricked This Way Comes” is an inventively absurdist plot about Rick using science to undo the plot of Stephen King’s Needful Things. The Devil (played by Alfred Molina) has come to town and opened up a shop, very subtly called “Needful Things.” Now he’s selling knickknacks that fulfill dreams but have a horrible curse on them, like an aftershave that makes Morty’s math teacher irresistible to women, but, twist, it also makes him impotent....

Publishing decent comics that hook in new readers attracted by other forms of media is something that Marvel is really good at (take note DC), and once I had heard that both writing and art duties on Rocket Raccoon would be handled by Skottie Young, I was pretty stoked about this new series. So here we are, two issues in, and it looks like my excitement was justified: Rocket Raccoon is a riot – quite literally at one point....

There’s a logical progression at work. Even as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) dies or Amanda (Shawnee Smith) dies, someone new like Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) and Jill (Betsy Russell) rises to take their place, and the movies have tried their best to make it make sense. That’s right, I just accused Saw scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton of being able to weave together the threads linking their Saw movies. Given that the series has been in their hands since Saw IV (and will be in their hands for Saw VII), it’s good that they’re able to plot out where they want the story to go and communicate that effectively....

Do you remember those old complicated word problems you’d get in math class? The sort of thing that would say, if Billy is leaving at 9 AM and walks at 5 miles an hour and Freddy is leaving at 10 AM and walks at 7 miles an hour, who is going to get to the fishing hole first. They were questions designed for you to see the tree through the forest, analyzing all the details, determining what information is essential and which is a distraction, and figuring out the most effective way to attack the problem....

1.3 Wanna Play A Game? No secret being kept from Emma is more pivotal than what Maggie, Emma’s mom, has kept buried for two decades. We’ve known since day one that she has a dark history with Brandon James, the killer in a string of gruesome teen murders back in her high school days. As Brandon’s obsession–and who ultimately helped to bring him down, though not intentionally–she is inescapably tied to the current revival of his original rampage....

1.2 The Descent Into Hell Is Easy We pick up where we left off last time: with Clary making the choice to trust Jace, the pouty stranger with the medieval weapons cache, rather than turning to her best friend and/or her pseudo-stepfather for help saving her mother from a madman. Granted, seeing actual evidence of demonic activity might’ve swung it in his favour, but it’s still a difficult sell. The show’s relying on the fact that we want to see more of the Shadowhunters’ world to smooth over any lapses in logic, but so far, it hasn’t really shown us anything worth seeing....

This brings us to the US interpretation of Shameless, guided by the Paul Abbott, the creator of the British original, and featuring the naturally quite talented William H Macy as Frank Gallagher. Though the UK series saw its debut in 2004, it wasn’t until 2011 that the US decided to get in on the act. Shameless fills an unusual position in US television; it’s not as comedic as My Name Is Earl, nor is it as heavy as The Sopranos....

After all, we were returning to a set of characters who had been nicely set up in Sherlock Holmes, and could now really be ‘let loose’ on some meatier story lines and interesting plot developments. Also on the wishlist? That some of the more overt problems with the first movie (the shocking use of fast edits, drawn out fight sequences and over stylised comedy) would have been ironed out or eradicated this time around, to create a better balance within the film....
