12 Monkeys Season 2, Episode 9 Although the team has split up for a two front war in this week’s 12 Monkeys episode, it’s difficult to decide which mission is more important, dangerous, or impactful. On the one hand, it was nice to return to the subject of the virus, which is still obviously a big problem, but on the other hand Cassie and Ramse made progress in the pursuit of the Witness....

Tony continues to do his bad guy thing pretty well. A shame really he wasn’t a villain throughout the show as he’s good at it. He sends his poor victim into the train station to board a train – of which a bomb will also be placed. I wonder what all the other regulars are upto this week? Jack hasn’t tortured or shouted at someone for info in a whole hour, so yup he’s at it again....

Day 8: 10:00 – 11:00pm This week’s episode of 24 was a far more sedate outing, with the hour mostly trying desperately to cover a collection of bases. Even though there were quite a few plot asides, nothing much really happened that hasn’t already been alluded to previously. Still, it was all worth it for Renee’s inevitable shift into total madness. Despite Jack and Renee’s escapades dealing with the main plot, the two were mostly in the background this time, and much of the episode focused on the other storylines....

As I said in the pilot, Kenneth is the one to watch in the series who goes from background filler to best character in the space of three episodes. This would normally be the point, being the wit-heavy show that it is, that I start showing off the lines from last night in a desperate attempt to make people watch next week. (Okay, what about the fact that Tony’s now doing reviews of Californication, which is on straight before it?...

We got to speak with Spencer after the Timeless panel for the Television Critics Association. Fresh off the acclaimed series Rectify, Spencer returns with a leading role. The pilot takes her back to the time of the Hindenberg, and subsequent episodes go further back in history according to Kripke and Ryan. Timeless premieres Monday, October 3 at 10 p.m. on NBC. Tim Burton’s Wonderland is a decidedly lush and highly textured universe into which extreme but still recognisable characters from the subconscious of Lewis Carroll was deposited like occasional wild flowers. It takes an interesting premise that Alice came to Wonderland previously as a child, in her dreams, and now returns an adult to repeat the oddly similar experience. The problem the film has, and it’s an issue with many Alice interpretations, is that the narrative has a rather aimless and meandering nature, into which it’s difficult to inject much pace or an anticipation of excitement....

Of course, in comics, death is rarely permanent. Intellectual property is, simply put, better off in the land of the living, and though death and extended absences might make for good buzz and sales spikes, as sure as night follows day, you can be sure that Bruce Wayne isn’t going to stay dead long. The staggering reality, far from Morrison being a bad writer, is that many people criticising this series are BAD READERS....

Licensed comics are rarely any different. Where movies tend to have licensed computer games, there’s a decades-old trend of TV shows having a licensed comic. Even so, after over 30 years of trying, they’re still almost universally crap. With the time and storytelling restrictions vastly different to game tie-ins, what is it that makes licensed comics the utter quality black hole that they so frequently are? I’ve been considering it and I think I’ve identified the three mistakes that licensed comics make....

As is the formula, there are three main characters this episode focuses on: the twins, Blake and Jen. The twins are still gearing up for Nathan’s leaving party, which I had actually sort of forgotten about. As it’s the main reason we’ve been introduced to the “Legend” characters, it did come as a shock that that is something I would forget. As there are only three episodes left, the leaving party will surely be the culminating series ender....

Arrested Development Season 5 Episode 2 Michael Bluth wants out of the family. It’s a threat as hollow as Buster’s fake army hand. Michael may be spinning his wheels, but at least Arrested Development Season 5 episode 2 is trying to move forward. As the episodes builds to that moment, each character is dealing with an identity crisis of their own. In a way, they still need to wrap up their individual storylines of season four....

The other guy is revealed to be Deadshot, a lone gunman whose motives differ from Oliver’s idealist view in a couple of vital ways. What they’re doing really isn’t that different, however, and we’re again encouraged to question the moral implications of what we’re watching our hero do each week. A hired assassin might be more morally dubious on first sight, but Oliver’s revenge-fuelled rampage is yielding the same results....

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 3 During the past two episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead, there were moments in which I caught myself wondering when the show would go full-blown, all-out horror again like it did at the end of its first season. I thought to myself, “Be patient, me. They’re probably saving it up for the big finale again.” Yeah… no. Looks like the third episode’s the charm here in the more tightly written second season....

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. What the hell were you expecting, something ponderous and joyless? If that were the case, the show would be called Ash vs The Walking Dead, because there’s already enough of that on TV. Still, Ash vs Evil Dead has always had a tough line to walk between an expanding (and confusing) mythology, the considerable comedic energy of its three terrific leads, and the requisite, over-the-top, gross out Deadite slashing goodness....

Lang, who goes by the nickname ‘Slang’, has already turned in two memorable performances this year, in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies and the film adaptation of Jon Ronson’s The Men Who Stare At Goats. His larger-than-life appearance as Avatar‘s antagonist is the jewel of the bunch, capping off a great year for the stage actor, and current co-artistic director of the respected Actor’s Studio. A precise, intriguing figure, in this roundtable interview we speak about his theatre and film careers, his fascination with the military, and the movie actors that have inspired him....

But Cameron plans to do something about that. While it’s no surprise that he plans to make his four Avatar sequels in 3D, what may raise some eyebrows is that he intends to remove the need to wear 3D glasses to get the effect. There is also the small matter of theaters needing to invest in the technology to project the glasses-free 3D that Avatar 2 is likely to have....

1.10 A Mixture of Madness For the first time since the pilot episode, the character given the most focus is Anthony Starr’s Sheriff Lucas Hood. Pre-credits and throughout the episode, we’re treated to some conversations Hood had with his parole officer halfway through his time in prison. We know Hood served his full fifteen-year sentence, so we immediately know this can’t end well but they’re a very nice look at the character in conversation....

The list of viewing, then, has just been revealed in Broadcast magazine, and while times and transmission dates aren’t yet in stone, here’s the edited-for-geek highlights of what you can expect on BBC One and Two over Christmas. Doctor Who: The Next Doctor Figured you might have heard about this one. David Tennant and David Morrissey, along with a pair of sonic screwdrivers, united to fight the Cybermen in Victorian England....

Before there was reality TV, there was EdTV. Sure, there’d been the Loud family and the Gong Show, but they were just CIA fronts, according to Chuck Barris. The nineties flirted with reality shows, like Real World on MTV, but EdTV, at the time, seemed unlikely. A television crew following someone around all the time and beaming it into people’s houses? It was funny. In the nineties. So let that be a lesson to you....
