And here we are, the penultimate episode of Primeval New World, Canadian spin-off of the UK timehole-jumping dinosaur-hunting sci-fi drama, and the first part of the only labelled two-part episode of the thirteen-entry run. As ever, let’s begin with a detailed look at the events of the episode. It’s a warm day and some attractive young men and women are playing beach volleyball in the park so queue some gratuitous slow-motion shots of hunks and babes battling it out....

Quarry Season 1, Episode 3 Have viewers perhaps become so accustomed to likable criminals on TV that they wonder regretfully why Buddy has lost the joy of his job? Surely all killers revel in the power and gore of taking out their enemies with no harm to their psyche, right? Not so with Buddy! Although he does have a lovely and perfectly brash mother who dutifully sews up his wounds, it’s somehow sad to see him regretful and self-destructive....

At Kingdom Hospital, Dr. Lona tries to do a scan on the baseball player, however, Mary has told Sally Druse that doing so may trap him in the in-between lands forever. And so Sally Druse begs and pleads with Dr. Lona not to go through with the scan, or else condemn the man to a fate worse than death, but nobody will listen to her. Down in the old kingdom, the in-between space, the baseball player sees his dead girlfriend zombified and taunting him, a dead tarantula crawling out of her mouth....

4.14 Clues The Enterprise crew are collectively having some personal time after completing a mission early. Worf is taking a mok’bara class. Picard is showing Guinan his Dixon Hill holodeck program. And Crusher is growing some moss. I don’t even have to make jokes any more, that’s literally what she’s doing. Data informs Picard that they’ve found an interesting star (Again, not joking) with an unstable wormhole and an M-class planet nearby....

1.3 Reg You need only look at the cheerily bright cover of Chat Magazine, with its unnerving collision of a model’s toothy smile and primary colour headlines about strangulation, rape and abuse, to see our popular fascination with grim real-life tales. Those mags fulfil the same function as horror movies – they thrill, disgust, and ultimately reassure. Thank God it didn’t happen to me, we can say. Oh look! A word scramble....

This review contains spoilers. All The Glittering Blades follows Nathaniel as he attempts to live the quiet life offered to him by his brother, who in turn continues his pursuit of Edmund Reid. Nathaniel finds it difficult to adjust to his lonely cottage in the Hackney Marshes, but he occupies himself with fishing for eels, which he then sells on to a local fish seller, Mr Sumner. When Sumner dies, Nathaniel befriends his daughter Prudence, her brother Caleb, and her son Robin, but it is only a matter of time before his past catches up with him....

Robot Wars is packed with endearing features. This week’s included the proud-as-punch dad of winning team TR2 repeatedly singing the praises of his fifteen-year-old son while said son shifted bashfully on his feet. Then there was the nervous laughter of students Team Overdozer well aware of the impending folly of taking a robot only marginally more high-tech (and less well-armoured) than a Billy bookcase into the arena. Add the extended chuckle everyone enjoyed over the idea of a ‘bum-axe’ and the result is intensely cheering television....

Russell Tovey has been ticking off British sci-fi series one by one since popping up in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special, The Voyage of the Damned (and then again briefly in The End of Time – Part 2). Tovey was the only member of the Being Human pilot to make it to the show proper, and his departure at the beginning of series 4 prompted many more tears than hurrahs from fans....

Scandal Season 5 Episode 20 There was a lot of “trumping” in last night’s Scandal as characters pulled out all the stops to win their party’s nomination. Here’s out review. Trump Card: Hollis Trump, I mean…Doyle Yes, Hollis screwed himself over when Liv set him up and recorded a revealing conversation on his part. After all the racist, misogynistic remarks he had spouted in the last few weeks, which only boosted his ratings… his voters discovered he was a liar....

Steeped in the language of videogames, manga and anime, the film moves at an astonishing pace, boasting a razor-sharp, highly quotable script. Effects adorn every other scene, whether rendering simple comic book sound effects drifting in and out of a frame, or astonishing, super-powered swordfights. The cast, universally young and attractive, is an utter gold mine of up-and-coming talent, and there’s not a poor choice amongst them. Throughout the film, Wright positively revels in his ability to translate the hyperkinetic energy of the source material to the screen....

1.10 Revelations Moving along, I’ve likewise really enjoyed Scream’s first season, and its finale this week reminds us just how good this show has managed to be as a whole thus far. Structurally, it serves as a fitting bookend to the pilot–we’re brought full circle back to the dock and the tragedy that began there twenty years ago. Another body falls into the water, life lost to unfair circumstances beyond their control....

For gamers with fond memories of Sega’s glory days, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works is a fascinating artefact. Its publishers, Read-Only Memory, brought us the affectionate and superbly put-together Sensible Software book last year, which offered a comprehensive insight into one of the UK’s pivotal game developers. Collected Works is, if anything, even more lavish. Its stylish, hardbound covers contain a wealth of artwork, sprite designs, developer interviews and design documents, offering a detailed overview of the Mega Drive’s creation, its numerous peripherals, and most importantly, its varied library of games....

This particular author is right up there with Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick in terms of revolutionizing the genre. I am sure he is tired of being compared to these legends, so I will freely admit that when I think of Wolfe, I think of Bill Watterson. That last one caught you off guard, didn’t it? Why would I say that the creator of Calvin and Hobbes is on the same level of pure awesome as Wolfe?...

Nearly a decade ago, back in 2005, Sin City was a breath of fresh, white-blood filled air. With its swaggering stylistics, beautiful contemporising of classic noir storytelling, smoky jazz themed score and impeccably chosen cast, there was so much to love. And love it I certainly did. Such is the passage of time since, however, that there’s a strong question mark over whether Frank Miller’s unique visual imagery would still hold up having been emulated to death in the convening years?...

Life sucks and then you die. That’s what the first two-part story from Skins would have you believe, at any rate, with the second part of Skins Fire starting off bleak and just getting darker and darker. Did Effy learn anything from her time in the city? Not really. Did Naomi and Emily get their happy ending? Definitely not. At least little Dom got away without some huge personal tragedy but, if we’re being totally honest, nobody cares about Dom....

After becoming little more than background noise for over half of this current series, something drastic had to be done to put you back in the spotlight. Something like, say, a severe mental illness, perhaps. Like Cassie had in the first gen, but not played for laughs. But bi-polar disorder sounded a bit too clinical and non-sexy, so it was upgraded to the far more exciting Psychotic Depression! There’s a visit from Naomi who, in a typically Naomi move, proceeds to talk all about her own problems....

Son of Zorn: Season 1, Episode 2 “Zorn, I’m starting to think that you have no idea what you’re doing.” Now this Zorn I can get into. “Defender of Teen Love” provides a much better idea of how random episodes of this show will work and how relics from Zorn’s world will integrate and influence the storytelling. I can’t help but think of Rick and Morty a little as this parental figure uses their respective magic to help their offspring in some way....

3.10 Fírinne Of course, I don’t condone violence in real life, but it feels like this week’s Sons Of Anarchy has gone back to doing what it did best in season one and two, combine hard hitting action scenes with gut punching emotional plot arcs. So, this week, aside from the terrible Irish accents and the Californian sun blasting over ‘Belfast’, the scenes in the capital of Northern Ireland are absolutely fantastic....

5.2 Authority Vested Last week ended with Unser being on the receiving end of a beating from some unidentified hooligans. My interpretation, supported by last week’s comment section, was that the attack came from the nomads who had just joined SAMCRO. This week the Sons aren’t any closer to knowing who is responsible for the home invasion, but Unser thinks that he can tell that the perpetrators were white from the nature of the beating – it felt obligatory rather than angry....

1.4 And Left No Friendly Drop There have been two warring sides of the show up until now, with the high school drama and terrorism plots never really meshing. For the latter to work, I suspect the first has to be tweaked until it provides a solid base for the more important action, and this week’s focus on Sophia and her athletic aspirations did that quite nicely. Wanting to join the swim team with her fellow students, this was where the racial tensions came even more to the fore with discussions about Jackie Robinson and even a conversation in which Sophia, Julia and Lukas talked about being minorities....
