Lost Season 4 Episode 3 Review

And what is it about this episode that’s getting me so worked up? Well, it’s that the Lost Island appears to exist in some kind of chronal anomaly – or, for those of you that don’t speak Technobabble – a Time Hole. Hints about this have been dropped in writer interviews and supplemental material ever since the far-flung days of Season One, and suddenly the payoff has finally shown up in the series proper, justifying the discerning fan’s otherwise blind faith....

Lost Season 6 Episode 17 Review The Lost Finale

I had this big joke planned to open my review of the Lost finale. I came up with it weeks ago. I was going to open with Homer’s line from the classic Simpsons episode, The Joy of Sect, where after watching a Movementarian brainwashing video, he remarks: “Wait, I’m confused about the movie. So the cops knew that internal affairs were setting them up?”. The joke being, of course, that just like Homer, the film had been so confusing that I’d just made my own one up in my head....

Louie Model Review

Much of “Model” really plays up Louie as a Charlie Brown type. He’s a poor schlub, ill-fitted to function in society, making him such a consistent loser that the characters around him seem exhausted by his very being. Take the girl at the comedy club at the beginning of the episode who cuts him off before he can ask her out: “Just don’t ask. I don’t wanna live that right now, okay?...

Luther Episode 5 Review

And so we come to the penultimate episode of Luther, and making a change from the self-contained episodes so far, this is the first of a two-parter which ends in a cliff-hanger for the season finale. Angered at this, the tattooed kidnapper decides to release the art dealer and, as a guarantee of his return, he keeps his wife as ransom until he comes back with the diamonds. As a show of just how serious he is, he cuts out the poor woman’s tongue and promises more bloodshed until he has the jewels in his possession....

Mark Millar On Superhero Movies Every Boom Becomes A Bust

With Marvel also hoping to land a major hit with Captain America: Civil War and Fox still to release X-Men: Apocalypse this year, and Suicide Squad still to come from Warner, 2016 is a busy year when it comes to superhero movies. According to comic book writer Mark Millar, it could also prove to be a pivotal year for the genre’s future in Hollywood. “Every boom eventually has to become a bust and the only way to delay that bust is to make sure the quality of the work is really good,” Millar said....

Marvel S Agents Of S H I E L D Season 2 Episode 19 Review The Dirty Half Dozen

2.19 The Dirty Half Dozen How did this week’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron episode fare, then? Well, to be honest, somewhere in between the two, but leaning in the positive direction. Winter Soldier-era S.H.I.E.L.D. aside, this is probably the next best allusion to the movies we’ve ever had. Both iterations of S.H.I.E.L.D. teaming up to attack a HYDRA base, with Dr. List inside, where experiments are being conducted on enhanced individuals?...

Merlin Series 2 Episode 6 Review

After last week’s episode that, for the first time since the series started, actually had me enjoying Merlin, it once again delivers on the fun. While this is the first attempt at a two part episode it could be said that the story was drawn out and a little thin on the ground to warrant a two part story. But all is forgiven courtesy of the superb work put in by Sarah Parish whose repugnant Lady Catrina Troll, whose laugh-out-loud lines and mannerisms made what could have been another contrived and basic story into a really great enjoyable episode....

Molly S Game Review

Indeed, with a flicker in her countenance that causes characters and viewers alike to wonder when she’s bluffing, Chastain gives a magnificent turn as a woman who might be Sorkin’s most quick-witted hero to date. Always one of our generation’s best actors, Chastain complements Sorkin’s need to double deal on audience expectations in this tale about a “poker princess,” who eternally dresses the part, if only because she can use words as both her armor and weaponry....

The podcast has gone on tours across the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia, and will be hitting the U.S. starting later this month, but the good news doesn’t stop there. There’s also talk of a potential TV show or film adaptation. According to Deadline, the podcast creators are entertaining offers to turn My Dad Wrote a Porno into a TV show or film. A number of the podcast’s actorly guests are already vying for roles in the potential TV show or film adaptation....

Paper Towns Review

Paper Towns wants to be the deconstruction of the teen drama, and has been applauded in some corners for subverting the idea of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. It does neither of those things, despite a lot of effort on both counts, and what is left over is sadly never substantial enough to justify the movie. Margo (Cara Delevingne) is Quentin’s (Nat Wolff) aforementioned dream girl, a childhood friend who he reluctantly fell out of contact with when she became popular in high school....

Peaky Blinders Episode 1 Review

When I agreed to review Peaky Blinders for Den of Geek some weeks ago, I must admit I had little idea what I was signing up for. I had no clue what the programme would be about. I even thought the name was a little naff. So to have haphazardly stumbled across the most intelligent, stylish and engrossing BBC drama in ages is a real joy. Murphy is magnetic in the role....

Prince At The Movies

Purple Rain (1984) The film itself is a tight production that was well aware of the acting limitations of the musicians involved. Prince himself is monosyllabic and “mysterious” but pulls it off with his mind-boggingly charisma-fuelled stage renditions of tracks such as Let’s Go Crazy and Darling Nikki and every dart of his doe-like eyes. Of course, the burgeoning appeal of MTV and the music video surely helped with the film’s success (When Doves Cry seemed to be on constant repeat in the mid-80s) but the broad appeal of the story – rival groups, a smattering of comedy, disgruntled band members and love (not to mention sex), saw Purple Rain hit the jackpot....

Pulse Simon Heath Interview

If Pulse does get the go ahead, how long will it take to gear up for a full-length series? So, in this case, I think we’ll be looking at transmitting in late March or early April of 2011. And everyone involved in the pilot has signed up to do the series? Do you see beyond that first series? Is there a wider story arc planned? Yes, we’ve already talked about what the second series will bring....

Ray Donovan Episode 9 Review Road Trip

1.9 Road Trip It says something that it is the Ray Donovan who has rediscovered his parenting impulses who does this. Remember, he was even worse a few weeks back. After last week’s touching reconciliation with Bridget (who is, like several other top-billed characters, AWOL again this week) it’s Conor’s turn. His request to go to the Teen Choice Awards is indulged without hesitation, even when it requires the tailoring of a brand new tuxedo, complete with phoned-in Ray style tips (no turn ups, son)....

Revisiting Buffy Season 7 Episode 17

In New York, 1977, Spike and the current Slayer, Nikki Wood, face off. Nikki’s young son, Robin, cowers behind a park bench as Spike taunts Nikki, eventually leaving the conflict unresolved. (But we’ve seen the outcome of this particular fight before, this season even, so it’s not difficult to fill in the blanks.) She’s wearing the leather trenchcoat that’s recognisably now Spike’s trademark. Uh oh. Post-credits, Buffy’s at work and the kids seem to be mostly back to normal (except, presumably, any of the ones who died, got their eyes carved out, or were beaten into bloody pulps by Wood and Spike?...

Ripper Street Episode 3 Review The King Came Calling

1.3 The King Came Calling The King Came Calling starts off with some religious preaching from a vicar in the City, with the camera focusing on London folk going about their day-to-day activities around a water pump – the Victorian equivalent of a water cooler, no doubt. Then in comes a portly fellow who looks as though he’s been down the ale house for one too many. Swaying not so gently, he then proceeds to projectile vomit in the street à la Linda Blair from The Exorcist....

Ripper Street Series 3 Episode 1 Review Whitechapel Terminus

That final shot of Reid acknowledging just how much he had changed for the worse was a striking moment to end on and there was a certain amount of closure for the characters even if it was a more sombre atmosphere to end with. However, it also left plenty of room for development should a third series arrive. Whitechapel Terminus continues with that melancholic mood established by the Our Betrayal two-parter, picking up four years after those events....

Ripper Street Series 4 Episode 6 Review Edmund Reid Did This

4.6 Edmund Reid Did This The ongoing power dynamics throughout this series have been continually fascinating, but none moreso than here in Edmund Reid Did This as the hierarchies established are chopped, changed, stabbed and eluded by just about everyone involved. Since the first episode, the fourth run of Ripper Street has been focused through the rise and slow fall of Bennet Drake, a man usually defined by his scrappy underdog status rather than the current position of power he finds himself in....
