What could possibly go wrong with that? The early stages focus more on Abdul, played winningly by relative newcomer – to non-Bollywood audiences at least – Ali Fazal, and his colleague, Adeel Akhtar’s Mohammed. It’s very funny pairing too, with Akhtar in particular stealing moments, which makes the gradual relegation of his character a little disappointing. Soon, though, the pair are dispatched to England – and this is a film where very long expanses of time pass in seconds, to keep the story moving – to present a gift to Queen Victoria....

With a deft hand and a large reserve of ambition, director Susanna White mounts a very elegiac vision with Woman, one in which she and star Jessica Chastain contribute to the growing subgenre of deconstructionist oaters. Within the familiar form of “Cowboys and Indians,” they acutely assess the role of women in this well-worn cinematic genre, as well as the eternal tragedy of Native American relations in American history. While some have argued Woman Walks Ahead is a white savior movie, the sorrowful awareness of the film is that it knows all too well about its privilege, and the pain such good intentions can still inflict from 1890 to 2018....

Wynonna Earp Season 3, Episode 6 Oh, Doc. Must you make such dramatic decisions, you big dope? After being emotionally rejected by Wynonna, Doc takes his provider issues to Kate, who is ready and waiting. She turns him into a vampire in a closing scene that changes everything for this family. Sure, maybe this is part of Doc’s master plan to take out Bulshar—we’ve seen him make quite a few moves on his own in the last few episodes—but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dumb....

Oscar Isaac plays the Apocalypse of the title – the earliest mutant who ruled as a god in the ancient world. Stirring from his slumber, Apocalypse draws together a band of minions, among them Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp), before turning his attention to the most wanted mutant of them all – the now reclusive Magneto (Michael Fassbender). On the other side of the good-evil divide, wheelchair-bound Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) is still the benign mentor at his School for Gifted Youngsters, where another class of fresh recruits – including the psychic, telekinetic Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), wide-eyed teleporting gargoyle Nightcrawler (an unrecognisable Kodi Smit-McPhee) and laser-eyed rebel Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) – slowly learn how to control their powers....

“The end of each episode is a total reset button,” said McElhenney. Fittingly, McElhenney’s character “Mac” opened season eight by walking into Paddy’s Pub and announcing that his “sudden and extreme weight loss” would not affect his ability to be the protector of the bar. The intro is a diversion from the central storyline of season seven, where Mac’s newfound heftiness was a recurring joke. When shows go on for as long as Sunny has, they tend to bring in big guest stars or take liberties with the plots that they might not have tried in their prime....

12 Monkeys Season 2, Episode 8 Only those without a soul could watch this week’s 12 Monkeys episode with a dry eye. In an episode that leaves viewers wondering if they will ever be able to watch regular TV again, 12 Monkeys has reached a pinnacle in an already peaked season. With a Groundhog Day scenario that could easily have become stale, the writers have instead offered up a beautifully varied tapestry of interwoven choices that bring hope back into the time travel mission....

For a relatively simple network sitcom released in February, A.P. Bio feels like it has a lot riding on it. The show comes from Mike O’Brien, a former Saturday Night Live writer and occasional performer who seems like he’s been on the periphery of breaking out as a recognized comedy genius since the Reagan administration. SNL creator Lorne Michaels serves as an executive producer alongside former SNL head writer and current late night talk show sensation Seth Meyers....

5.7 Flicker The episode plays quite a bit with shooting style this week, courtesy of director Michael Goi, and the most effective sequences are those that evoke the horror films of the past. While on a train trip to promote The Son Of The Sheik, Valentino runs into German director FW Murnau, who has apparently been stalking him and feasting upon people during the entire trip. Murnau, the visionary behind Nosferatu, is a carrier of the blood-borne virus that grants immortality, and he’s willing to share his gift with Valentino to save him from death at the hands of the talking pictures....

It all begins because Sterling is convinced that he can make the sale of 900 kilos to Colombian drug dealers by stealing it from Mallory, and forcing Ray and Cyril at gunpoint to help him move the coke. Because nothing is as manly as trying to show off for mother! From there, it is just a hop, skip, and a barroom brawl into the ridiculously loving (and BDSM) arms of the “godmother,” a character who is more than she appears....

Arrow: Season 6 Episode 11 Cayden James puts one of his many plans into motion and a number of secrets come out into the open while the city comes under siege. It takes a bit, but Oliver eventually realized that with technology on the fritz, the city needed to go full Adama: analog everything. And on the dueling Arrow teams front, Curtis et al get good at defining boundaries and working out their problems, putting their team’s ethos into practice among each other and with their former colleagues, working with the A Team when necessary but firewalling them the rest of the time....

1.13 Touched By The Gods – Part 2 First, this week’s action. Having been betrayed by her favourite handmaiden, Ariadne has been sentenced to death and it’s up to Jason, who has really landed her in this predicament in the first place, to rescue his beloved and save the day. Ariadne’s fate is to be roasted to death in a big metal bull, though Jason feels he can bypass such a fate by handing himself in....

In true Guardians of the Galaxy fashion, the new Avengers film pays homage to one of the staples of ’80s culture: the arcade scene. The Defender cabinet was an absolute staple of the era. Released in 1981 by Williams Electronics, the cabinet was quickly followed by a handheld electronic game from Entex. The handheld might actually be the ultimate way to play this arcade space shooter since it featured a speed control knob that allowed newbies to adjust how fast the game scrolled....

Anti-heroes work better in TV than in film, I think: there’s more time to let you grow to root for and even like them. In film you have to set them up, show them being a total bastard, then set them on a path to some sort of redemption within a couple of hours. Bad Santa 2, to its credit, is brave enough not to shoot for actual redemption, instead aiming for a qualified brand of it that doesn’t betray the character....

3.7 The Last Supper A title like The Last Supper is pretty damn ominous. Knowing it going in to the episode creates certain expectations, and in the build-up to the final dinner scene the tension just kept mounting. But as the makeshift family at the heart of the show sit and eat together it became clear that the title was a promise; but not for this episode. Because even without any explicit set-up for the chaos to come, the feeling that this may be the last moment of peace for these characters weighed heavily over the final minutes....

The episode focuses primarily on the continued breakdown of the fleet, characterised by President Roslin and the Admiral, who for so long have been figureheads of hope and order. The almost robotic repetition of these menial tasks shows us the exhaustion of a military leader who has gone through the same motions day in and day out whilst they’ve been on the run from the Cylons and now, with seemingly all hope lost, we can see the toll it has taken....

This review contains spoilers. 2.7 The Ties That Bind It seems I spoke prematurely last week when I declared vampire cop Cecilia my new favourite character for her pledge to kill the purebred werewolf twins. Though she does play a part in this week’s episode, and one of the twins does end up dead, the story unfolds in a way that I couldn’t have predicted. After that curiosity-piquing cold open, we’re immediately thrust back in time to the beginning of this story, or, rather, the beginning of the end of Josh and Nora, and the potential end of Sally....

3.6 What’s Blood Got To Do With It? It starts when Kenny offers to feed Aidan (and asks a lot of hilarious vampire questions, such as if Aidan sparkles in sunlight – I wanted to giggle but then I remembered that for a lot of people that is their only exposure to the vampire mythos and then I mostly wanted to cry) and Aidan reluctantly agrees. A quarter of a century ago, human Aidan finds Bishop feeding on soldiers and tries to run him through with a bayonet....

3.13 Ruh Roh We begin with Liam. Being the creeper that he is, he’s stalked Josh and Nora to their rustic cabin of werewolf sex in the middle of nowhere so that he can drag them back to the city and show them what happens when a vampire who has drunk werewolf blood sires offspring. They turn into those hideously deformed creatures like Kat’s professor or Kenny. For the sake of clarity, I’m going to call them werepires despite the fact that that term is a bit misleading....

This review contains major spoilers. Mark Gatiss, so brilliant in his brief appearance at the end of last week’s episode, was far and away the best thing in this series finale. Mr Snow is one of the standout characters of the entire Being Human universe. Or rather he was, which made his exit all the more disappointing if I’m honest. It would have been great to see Gatiss play a larger role in the next series, which there is surely bound to be following events here....

It’s always tricky trying to form an impression of a twelve-part series from the first episode alone. Most of the episode is spent, inevitably, explaining everyone’s relationship to everyone else and setting the plot in motion. The most important question is, of course, will watching this first episode make you want to watch the second one? To which the answer is, yeah, probably, especially when it’s cold and wet outside and the cinema is so far away....
